You have to explain why, currently I'm running my 1.8t on the longlife 5w30, no issues.

The two oils at 100°C ( which is used to determine their grade ) have just 1 Centistoke viscosity difference , this is negligible and means LongLife III 504.00 507.00 is a thick 30 grade and Platinum 502.00 505.01 a thin 40 grade , if LongLife III was just .5 of a Centistoke thicker it would be a 40 grade .
Anyway thicker doesn't mean more protection .

However the big difference is quality owing to the LongLife III's superior oil basestock groups and LongLife additive package ( the oil stays fitter for longer )

As I thought, considering there's no price difference, it's a no brainer to buy the longlife even if you change it every 5000 miles or so. Thank you Gazwould for your input.

Well considering you put him in the title...

My reasoning for 5w40 over 5w30 is having thinner oil, same reason to run 0w40 over 5w40.

Newer members of the VAG group are specified to use 0w40 but do some research if you don't agree with our manufacturers as this question has been answered to death.

In terms of additives or oil specs if anyone's really bothered they should try another brand.

Regular oil changes are more important than all this malarkey anyway, hens why your 5w30 car hasn't exploded yet (I'm kidding by the way, yes 5w30 is fine just sub par).

Yes I put him in the title because he's the most knowledgeable person regarding oil on the forums I frequent. It was mentioned that I do oil changes circa 5000 miles.

I don't know his credentials to judge but I can tell you he parrots things from site to site as he has posted an image of my dyno on UK Passats.

That's the reason I didn't feel the need to explain in my original post, I don't mind answering questions if they haven't already been answered all over the 'net.

Edit: but what do I know, I just search for answers :search: and see what works/doesn't on my own car.

So it's not the done thing to seek others opinions. If the question has been done to death, don't respond to it, simple enough.

Why have you got your panties in a bunch over this, I don't know? God mode stuck on overdrive?

You listed a member in the title and ignored other opinions despite supposedly wanting them.

I'm not going to comment on this thread any more but good luck with your quest for optimum oil

It baffles me how you get the odd individual who thinks the 502.00 505.01 is the better oil .

The four images above come from four different entities , Lubrizol Corporation , Oil Specifications.org , Dr.-Ing. Sven-Oliver Kossmehl , VOLKSWAGEN AG and Total .

Crude as the information is they are all in conclusive agreement .
