After looking for an A3 for quite a while and seeing a couple that were really bad, I started looking for other cars. I'd considered E36 3 Series Compact, a Mk4 Golf or a Civic.

In the end I found this 02 A3 and managed to get it for £2350. What do you guys think? Bear in mind this is my first car, so it's only the 1.6 but it's an SE with the Blue Alcantara interior, armrest and climate control.

Just need to get some money together for some new alloys at some point.

Yeah gonna start modding it when I get it, though I'm not sure what exactly I'll do yet. Does anyone have any suggestions on some relatively cheap mods? I'm not going for anything performance related, just aesthetics.

Alloys will have to wait a bit as I've gotta pay for insurance and get it taxed as it's just ran out. Might go for some RS4's but dunno.

Congratz on the car aaron. First thing i'd do would be to debadge the rear end. Then i'd get some lowering springs & spacers and then once you got your money together get some RS4 alloys (Same colour as A3tom alloys) and she will look like a different car.
Bet you cant wait to pick her up

I'm down in the South East, Brighton to be more specific.

I was already thinking of a debadge but leave the 4 rings, obviously. The car isn't silver as it appears in the photos, its the faintest sort of light blue which look silver in some lights. I don't know if I'll be able to lower the car due to the insurance being funny about mods, I'll see when the time comes.

What size RS4's should I go for? I can't afford the real thing so I'll get some replicas I guess.

Think you've done well for a first car, tidy looking motor...

Like people have said, I'd d-badge it and if money is a factor I'd be tempted to look for some 16" 1.8 T alloys, that way their genuine, cheap to buy and the tyres would be kinder on the bank balance...as you've said insurance companies will punish you for any mods so that would keep things simple and completely change the look of the car...

I'd go for 18" if your not gonna lower her as if you got for 19" she gonna be sitting really high and there gonna be a big gap. Maybe even 17" if you can get them in that. I know every one says to declare mods but i've not delcared either two sets of alloys thats been on my car or 09 rear facelift lights and i wont be declaring lowering springs (not on the car yet). But other mod have/will be declared. I dont think your insurance will be that bad on you for alloys and lowering springs. I'm 19 my a3 was my second car and all my mods are declared besides the ones i've told you and my insurance hasnt gone up that much i have 0NCB aswell:crying:

I did claim off my insurance last year when i went round around about and my ESP started flashing and traction kicked in and then ended up going over a huge pot hole and it mashed my car up to be exact £2,235.90 worth of damage. And when it was in Audi they said an alloy was buckled (RS6 Style) so they spoke to my insurance company and ordered me a new one. I'm not saying you shouldnt declare any mods.
But alloys and lowering springs you can probably get away with.
Before any one decides to start a debate open a new thread:)

    Nice car!.

If you run 18's budget £500 to lower it otherwise it'll look odd. If you lower it, budget for a new front antiroll bar otherwise you'll have yoru drive shaft humping it.

If it was mine I'd look for some S3 Avus rims and do them in a nice dark grey or something :)

Just enjoy it though mate and get some no claims before worrying about modding it otherwise you'll get stung on your insurance. Its a nice car so just look at little bits such as de-badgeing, aero wipers etc :)

So about £400 or £500 for replica RS4's, and then about £400 for some quality(ish) rubber on them, and then £500 for lowering it, and then some more for a front ARB?

I think that'll have to wait quite a while then! I might just leave it on the standard alloys for a while, at least they aren't steelies :icon_thumright:

is an ARB neccassery on a 1.6, are you going to be driving it hard or doing any rack days, have a quick look on rochfordtryres website for a ruff price of whels with tyres, id think around £600 for both, like i say at the begining dont spend £500 lowering it unless you going to do track days etc, if you not just buy some springs and save alot of cash

It's a nice motor mate. I'd have been well chuffed to have that as a first car. The blue Alcantara trim is tasty.

Well done mate, my 1.6 A3 is also my first car and I love it - I'm sure you will too! Seems like you got it for a good price too. I'd hold off from getting alloys + a drop straight away. You're gonna want to save your cash for a few surprises you may find.

Thanks for the positive comments guys. Just waiting for a cheque or two and I'll be getting it ASAP.

I asked someone who's quite good with cars and mechanics to check under the bonnet, and he said the cambelt looked fine. Is the cambelt the visible one in the engine bay? There isn't any proof of it being done as the car hasn't got a great deal of service history. I've emailed Audi and asked for it but they're yet to contact me.

How can you judge a cambelt and how much should I be paying to get it done?

    Thanks
