It depends if you have it on fixed or variable servicing.... (retail sales tend to be fixed 10k, contract hire tends to be variable).

Not heard that one Arad. Have had Audis with variable fixed option for 11 years . All are set as variable (privately owned too! )

All eight of my A3s have been a private purchase and all have been set to variable interval servicing. In my case this has worked out between 18 and 19k miles for the first service and 36-38k for the second on each car.

Personally I think 18/19k miles is far too long between oil changes, especially on diesels when there is so much more carbon in suspension in the oil. My TDI 184 will b getting oil changes every 6 months/6k miles, but I will b keeping it 10 yrs or more...

Which is why I used the word tend :moa: It will be dependent on the dealer as a fixed service interval will be more profitable for them.

I specified mine with variable at order time....

Nope.. Not even going there... If I'm wrong, I'm wrong. Not going to try and prove it either way - but a statistical count of 3 (4 if you include me) saying they are on variable proves nothing.

From memory (i.e. I CBA to look it up) if you are on variable, it isn't worth buying the 3 year servicing....

    LMAO. !!!

16 Audis three dealers since 2003 all set to variable! Those kept for 3 years ish only required one service at about 18-20 months / 18k miles.

If you don't think modern oils can cope with 18-19k why choose 6k. Why not 3k as cars used to need many years ago. Things have moved on. Audi in particular asked the oil companies, Shell originally, to develop oils that would be quite happy with this sort of service interval. The oil companies have come up with the latest oils. Providing you use the the correct oil it is just silly to change every 6 months/6K. How often do you intend to change the gearbox oil. How often are you going to change the brake fluid. How often are you going to drain and refill the cooling system. Are you going to have the air conditioning services every six months. You have purchased a modern car - treat it like a modern car.

I respect everyone's right to their opinion but my decision to change the oil more frequently than recommended is based on my experience working for a major motor manufacturer for many years... Even the development engineers there recognised that extended service intervals were not a good idea for engine longevity but it was the marketing department that overrode them and imposed the longer intervals because owners wanted reduced cost of ownership. No matter how good the oil (and yes they are much better these days...) it still picks up [carbon] by-products (especially diesel) of the combustion process and these abrasive deposits cause wear.... Oil is one of the hardest working components in one of harshest environments in a car. I'm keeping my car indefinitely so I want to do all I can to keep it running efficiently with minimum wear for as long as possible...

Fine, it's your car and you do what you think is best for you. I don't have a problem with an 18/19k service interval, but I don't tend to keep my cars for more than 3 years. I like new cars and new car technology too much to be driving around in 'old' car.

Yes I do seem to remember sending them an email a few weeks ago!

With regard to the technology I suppose I should have added "some technology". I just don't like mobile phones full stop. Also do the Audi Sat Nav have as standard POI's for Beefeater restaurants, Brewers fayre restaurants, Piza Hut, RSPB offices and reserves, Lloyds Banks, Shell petrol stations, hotels by brand name, Audi dealers, Out of town shops by brand, B+Q stores, airports, train and bus stations, park and ride locations, ferry terminals, and many more - because my old fashioned TomTom does and I would miss them as well as the speed camera locations :)

That's fair comment, if I were only keeping the car 3 yrs, and it was bought with someone else's money; PCP or other 'never never' finance then I probably wouldn't worry about long intervals between services - it'll b someone else's problem in years to come,... but my car is actually MINE, bought with my own cash and I'm keeping it a long time so it makes sene to me look after my investment. Simples.
