Can anyone recommend a performance clutch for an S3?
Ideally not 4 figures.

Sachs organic and smf is the most commonly used uprated clutch.. Although I have seen a few guys running helix paddle clutches, but no idea how good they are...

Uprated clutch and flywheel will probably set you back £1k fitted...

You won't find much decent below £1k fitted.

I certainly wouldn't recommend a paddle clutch for road use, having had one myself,as it's more like a switch than a clutch.

Great at transmitting torque, but will not tolerate being slipped at all.

For anything below Stg3,the Sachs organic works well, and above that,a Spec Stg3+ will do the job.

Agree with paddle clutch im taking mine out soon as I've got the money to buy the spec 3+ Heard good things about it from s3alex and also spoke to the guy at spec about it

How much is that one?

Spec Stg3+ is around £1200 plus fitting etc and is a SMF flywheel with carbon metallic full face clutch good for 560lbs.

Ive just ordered a Stage 1 Sachs Organic from GNJ Motorsport for 491.00 and a LUK Duel Mass from Car Parts For Less 232.99 along with bolts and Concentric slave cylinder for 257.97.

So 748.97 for the parts ready for S2+ :D
Just need to get the fluids etc and my mate to fit it all :)

There you go.

Good result if you can fit it yourself and save a few hundred into the bargain

If you have plans to tune make sure you select the correct parts now to save you money in the long run. No point fitting a SMF if you are not going above stage 2+ or you don't frequently drive the car hard(launches/drags) Stick with the DMF. If you are going above stage 2+ the only reliable option for big power which retains a friendly daily drive is the Spec 3+. I am about to have my Spec clutch fitted early January.

S3DUST that is a good price for those parts. Make sure its bedded in gently should be good! :thumbs up:

The Sachs will cope very well if it's bedded in gently over around 500 miles, and you don't do drag runs or launches.

Mine finally started to slip at 440lbs,which is well above it's rated limit,so that was a pretty good result.

I think I was the original Spec user here, and I can vouch not only for it's toughness, but also everyday usability, which is light years away from a paddle clutch,as I've said above.
It combines the torque capabilities of many paddle clutches, with the user friendliness of the OEM clutch.

Sorry fella!

You can keep your horses for courses I wanted my S3 to stay as enjoyable as OEM could be if your going over this with a big turbo than FairPlay but with the TTE 420 Running over 400bhp on pump with no WMI thats as far as I would want to go and Alex on here saw 440lb on his sachs before giving up ghost

I bought a Audi to keep it's Audinest) If thats a word lol!!!!! as as soon as it starts losing that then theres a lot out there that are far cheaper my friend!

@Wave33
I have just ordered my bits today see above ;)

What clutch is recommended for stage 1 / 2 performance?

At Stg1,the stock clutch might be OK,and even at Stg2....best advice is try it,and if it works, then you've saved money, but keep the money for a Sachs plus LUK DMF in reserve in case it doesnt.

I was hoping mine would last at stage 1 but 10k miles later and its dead ! slip in anything above second :( so bit the bullet and ordered the sachs organic and thought well now i have the clutch may as well have the power :) S2+ :)

Have a look at the clutch specialist.com ( CG Motorsport ), I've got a stage 3 clutch from them waiting to be fit, just gotta buy a new flywheel first.
Cant say what they are like but I've heard very good things about them and they are cheap, every clutch they make is hand made. I should have mine fitted in the next month so i'll let everyone know. I would recommend buying the LUK flywheel (which will mate with this clutch perfectly) else where though as you can find it much cheaper online.

Clutches aren't hand made at that sort of price.

Please also remember that a paddle clutch is purgatory around town.

Well it says on there website that every clutch is hand built by them, they can build a clutch for any car. My clutch was £345 so as long as it works and is reliable and gets me to stage 2+ I'll be happy.
I'm going for there reputation by what people on other forums have said and if you can't believe what people on forums say is there any point in all this....

I guess I sounded a bit negative there, but there is a world of opinion contained within the words "hand built".

I've used paddle clutches before(admittedly more expensive than those) but they truly are a PITA around town.

As long as it works,and you're happy,then that's a good result.

ill be keeping an eye on this thread as I'm sure i will need one pretty soon!
