Been thinking about getting a Quattro for a while, spotted one on ebay and went for it:

Bit of an unusual color, but has a few little niggles we need to sort out.

Mark (Byzan_A4) drove us down to get it, unfortunately the journey home wasnt so easy. We had to pull over after about 3 miles with some horrible steering judder, and upon stopping the smoke pouring off the two offside wheels highlighted the problem. A bit of sharp braking and some poking with a screwdriver seemed to free them off, but we decided to head to halfords and effect a better repair. Pulled the front sliders in the halfords carpark (where i took the above photo) and added some WD40 to free the sliders up a bit, which got us the 200miles home without any further problems.

Spent today stripping the brakes all round. Swapped the 312's over from the FWD and greased up the rear sliders properly. Swapped the wheels over too and made some headway into stripping the bits i want to transfer off the old car. I also did an oil change, and we fitted my satin black interior handles. I'm hoping to give it a wash tomorrow, and i'll post up some better pics once thats done!

Theres a few things i want to change on it, like the chrome roof rails and metal interior trim. I also need to fix an ABS fault, and we've discovered a broken rear spring too, so that will need attention before the MOT (due in a months time).

Its LZ4L "Beere Pearl". Its a hard color to photograph. Sometimes it looks purple, sometimes it looks almost burgandy/maroon, and sometimes it looks pink lol. The second pic above is pretty close to the real thing.

I've always wanted a black car, but something about this one just pressed the right buttons, and now i've fitted my dark boleros i really like the look.

Looks good. Is it the normal abs fault that you cant communicate with the module? As for the rear spring if its only half a coil or so thats broken just get the angle grinder out and make it a full coil and do the same on the other side. Works a treat. What did you end up paying for it?

ABS fault is no signal from offside rear sensor.

No juddering, ABS light just comes on as soon as you drive off and then stays on until cleared. Measuring blocks show no signal from 1kph all the way up to 20kph when it disconnects. It'll either be the sensor or the ring, But i suspect i'll have to remove the upright and chisel the sensor out anyway as these things tend to sieze solid after about 3 minutes.

Adam, sounds interesting, are your rails already off the car?

I'm thinking craig might have a pair of S4 rear springs in decent nick from his car, if so i'll just jam the pair on, but i need to speak to him and find out.

I dont have a saloon mate ;) Old car is an avant too, i much prefer the look of the avant, and TQS avants seem to be particularly rare.

Spent a good 5 hours on the car today with the angle grinder ;). Pics to follow!

    Hehe yep!

Gave it a wash, and started on the tar.

It took bloody ages removing all the tar, so mark worked round doing the detarring and i followed with the Menzerna RD3.02 and the polisher.

Braught it up pretty good, there are a few deeper scratches that we couldnt shift, and a few rust bubbles under the paint on all four doors that i think i'm going to try and speak to Audi about. Rear bumper has a scrape, and theres some corrosion on the door handles that will need attention at some point.

We followed that up with a coat of Blackfire Midnight Sun Ivory carnuba wax.

We're going to try and take some good photos tomorrow, so watch this space!

Big thanks to Mark for the help collecting the car, and helping these last two days sorting it out!!

Thats scrubbed up preety nicely. That Menzerna and Blackfire are pretty awesome products. Never used a machine myself, I'm too wary about buggering it up (buffer trails/light and dark patches...etc etc), it's a black art! Still, I bet it beats spending 11 hours doing it by hand!

still took 5 odd hours even with the machine . I doubt you could have made as much difference by hand at all tbh as this Audi paint is made of diamonds or something equally tough, lol

To be honest I spent 11 and a half hours doing it after I got rid of the tar (using Tardis, check it out its great stuff.....http://www.polishedbliss.co.uk/acatalog/autosmart-tardis-clean.html), and clayed it with a coarse clay bar. The condition of the paint was dire and full of contaminents/marring/swirl marks/holograms and even sanding marks. I achieved about 80% correction using a lakes light cut pad and 203s. For the deeper scrathches I used wet and dry 1000-2000 grit and polished again afterwards. Now the only marks left are the deeper swirl marks, and you can only see them under close inspection under a street lamp, or using a sun gun. Well worth the effort! Check it out.........

Ollie, you are a lucky one then mate, i have found it's hard to correct anything by hand on this hard coat paint and 203s would have gone nowhere near Aragorns or mine for that matter, maybe after the heavier stuff as a final finish before Wax.

That Tardis stuff wouldn't touch the tar spots on my car, i ended up using good ol' Carplan stuff, worked wonders on the Avavnt too. It's amazing where the spots end up, roof rails, roof, middle of the bonnet etc etc.

I have a decent accumulation of different types and compounds of pads for differing finishes etc too, and some decent hand application sponges/pads. The clay stage is wasted if you are hitting the car with a machine poilisher anyway as the machine takes more off than the clay ever would, hence once we de-tared the Avant we hit it with the RD302 and in spots the G3.

It was starting to spit so we had to whack some protection on quick, if it wasn't getting darker once it stopped i would hit it with the 203s or thr 85rd etc and re wax it, i have left the stuff there should Kev choose to attack it again, lol

Nice one mate, the new avant looks very tidy in your photographs and even more so after a bit of elbow grease with the polisher! Top work :icon_thumright:

I've not driven it personally (no licence etc) but the missus seems to think it feels a lot better, more solid and more planted than the FWD, which is impressive because the FWD is on new bushes and arms all round, and this is on originals all round!

Its nicer to sit in too, with the half leather and the climate control, and all the facelift tweaks.

Took the OSR strut out yestarday (in the rain) and fixed the spring by cutting off the end of the broken bit like Ian suggested and sticking it back on. Removed about 3/4 of a coil in the end. I need to do the same to the other side now, as the OSR is about 10-15mm lower than the NSR now. I would have done it last night, but the rain kept threatening so i decided against it. Once i've done that and fixed the ABS i can put it in for an MOT.

Sounds promising then if it's the original arms and bushes and it still feels more positive!

Yeah my '96 is definitely no frills; the SET is a much nicer place to be (massively down to Mark's tweakery).

Might as well slam it if you're cutting the springs hey mate?! lol.. my MK1 Polo never recovered from the 'trimming' that I gave the springs

Well i figured the broken bit of spring was already doing nothing, so i may as well just tidy the end up and put it back in for now. Its a parallel spring anyway, so it still seats perfectly on the strut.

Unfortunately the front isnt as easy, as the front springs are pigtailed, so i wont be grinding those down!

Might see if i can find some sensible front springs, or find out if this B6 upright mod really does lower the car.

Mark, I gave each panel 3 hits at 20 mins a time. The level of correction is not 100 (never guna be by hand), but I removed most of the smaller swirl marks leaving only the deeper scratches present (that can only be removed by machine).....The key is in the prep. That and polishing each panel untill the arm starts to shake. Now I pressed VERY hard and when the pad turns blue and the polish starts cutting you KNOW its working. Good ol' fashion elbow grease. And a LOT of it. Lucks got sod all to do with it.
That aside tidy car fellas your work paid off!
