It's the Audi Exclusive badge I think. A local boy I know has just retrimmed his Black Mk5 Gti in a burnt orange, full seats, door panels etc. Looks very good actually.

You're not wrong, the best part of £40K for what's basically a Golf GTI with 4WD and a bigger turbo.

I've got nothing against the S3, but you'd have to be crazy to think it's the best way to spend that sort of cash...

Its a lot of money thats for sure, but if you really want a (new) premium fast hatch then you have no choice unfortunately.

You often hear "you can buy a 911 for that!", but it wont be new, wont be as practical, and will cost more to run, although it will be great to drive.

    Cheers
    Paul

The 911 is a car you would have as well as an S3, not instead of.

Of course you have a choice - I'd spend £20K on a less premium hatch, and the other £17K on drugs, partying, girls, champagne, etc. A nice dashboard isn't worth £17K.

I agree that you can't compare a used car to a new car - however good a 997 you can now pick up for that sort of cash.

I disagree that a 911 should be a second car though - it's very much a potential daily driver. I'd want something more exotic or less practical if I was to keep something locked up in the garage.

Yep, if you dont want a premium fast then there is lots of choice.
But if you do...... then there is little or no choice and you will dig deep like many S3 punters do.

I have a small family and looked hard into 911 ownership, it simply isnt a practical daily driver for some one like me. Couple of mates who have had 911s and small families also owned them as 2nd cars.

BUT if your spunking 17K on high times and whores then you probably dont have kids, or a wife for that matter.
No necessarily a bad thing of course......

Anyway, where is Paddy? not like him to miss a "S3 are too expensive" opportunity..

Oh, and IMO those seats look ok on a Black car....

    Cheers
    Paul

Ok fair point, the 911 is really a 2 seater, regardless of the (+2), so no good for putting kids in.

I'd happily spend the money on something special - an R8 is worth every penny of the asking price to me, but I could just never imagine spending close to £40K on an A3, regardless of the spec.

Horses for courses though, far be it from me to judge what somebody spends their cash on.

I look at it like this

37k for that S3 or 22k for a brand new Black edition with the 2.0TFSI. To me it looks like 15k for quattro and 60bhp

15k can get you a second hand Boxster-S for the weekend fun and the BE for daily use!

Paddy will be along soon to do that......

    R8?
Damn straight, in a heartbeat. An epic looking machine.

    911 v R8..........

    cheers

Agreed, makes no sense to me either. To be fair, An S3 doesn't have to £37K - that's a greedy dealer, and somebody who had a fit whilst filling in the order form and ticked too many boxes by accident.

An R8 will always be more cash than an equivalent 911, but it's more exclusive. £60K for a well spec'd 2 year old R8 with sub 10k miles seems like a great way to spend that sort of cash.

An R8 at £80K+ is to me better value than an S3 at nearly £40K. Yes it's twice the cash, but it's an awful lot of car.

Again, fair point, but its indeed Horses for Courses and 22K will buy a very nice AUDI, no doubt about it.
But it wont buy you an S3.

So it stands that if you really want an S3 then have to dig deep becasue they are not cheap.
Its the flagship of the A3 range (at the minute) and some people will pay the premium for it.
Then there is the tuning aspect, and the way it drives, and handles, and stops, grips, looks etc... Its a different car to a 20TFSI (which Im sure is a great car) and the price reflects that.

15K would certainly buy you a little Porker but lets not forget although many people can afford to buy a 2nd car, there still costs/problems asscociated with storing it, Taxing it, Insuring it, maintaining it etc.....

    Cheers
    Paul

Agreed - I know a guy who spend about that on a Boxster. The chain snapped, engine broke and he sold the car later for a few grand. A second hand Boxster is great value to buy, but not necessarily cheap to maintain.

Hence me suggesting blowing the £15K on a mental week in Vegas - you wouldn't have a Boxster in the garage, but you'd have some great memories (or maybe a blank with some flashbacks), but no blowing up engines to worry about.

If I was in the market for a daily R8 and had 60-80K to spend then I wouldnt be looking at S3s.

But I have a family, and dont have a slack 60K so to me its about as relevant a comparison as S3 v Ducatti.

    cheers

Sorry, you misunderstand me - not suggesting the 2 cars sell to the same customer.

Just saying that I think an R8 justifies that sort of price, whereas an S3 doesn't.

I can enjoy a £5 burger king and a £50 T-bone. I think £50 for a great steak is ok for a treat. But would I spend £10 on a burger king? No. Sorry, that's the best analogy I can do this morning.

    Ok, with you now.

I guess what we are saying is that whether something is `worth it` or not depends on the indivuduals circumstances and tastes.

I drove my mates E92 M3 (posh 3series) a few weeks ago and I simply wasnt blown away by it.

At 50K (lightly used) it was still very very good, but to me it just wasnt wasnt `worth` 50K, which incidently is TWICE what I paid for my lightly used s3.

But because he wanted and M3 and nothing else, he had to stump up the money or do without.
Buying a 335 and blowing the rest on partying and lucky dips was never a consideration.

So it was worth it to him, just not to me.

    Cheers
    Paul

My cousin went out in his mate's £65k fully loaded M3 cab (brand new) he said it was VERY VERY quick, but the back end was far too twitchy and the dashboard was so awful, it made him feel sick!

Thats pretty unlucky, mine was a dream and didn't cost much to run and maintain, but then it wasn't a high miler or old. People do bang on about buying Porkers only with a decent service history, but it really does count.

Not sure what i'd spend 37k on, but it certainly wouldn't be an S3 with orange seats!! I'd buy a new one for 32k (funnily enough) and then spend 5k on something else, maybe an old classic to tinker with in the garage (funnily enough!)

Well I paid £26,500 for my S3 Black Edition. Not every S3 is 37k.

That makes for £4,500 for Quattro, 60bhp and more!

I have owned a 911 ( admittedly a 964 model , so was getting on a bit ) , however it had the air cooled engine, so it sounded like, and was a "real" Porsche. Unlike , in my opinion at least, the mass produced water cooled Porsches of today . Although an older car it stood out unlike Porsches these days where you cannot tell from the front whether it is a 911 , a Boxster or a Cayman. It was easily a daily runner, fairly practical and with that flat 6 sounded like heaven. However , it cost a fortune to buy and run. To change the spark plugs the exhaust had to come off, for example. Loved it but it was an absolute money void that you just kept feeding. I know that newer Porsches are cheaper to service and buy now, however I would say that they are not as exclusive as an S3. Just count how many Boxters you see on the road now, they are like A***holes, everyone's got one ! So I would rather have an S3 even if you are paying a premium.

I've owned 3 Golf GTI's , Mk 3, Mk4 and Mk5. Build quality is ****. The Mk 5 was so bad I physically blocked the dealership's access in / out with the car until they agreed to change it for a new one, which I got and it was still ****. So they may be cheaper but lesser car for the money in regards to power, quality and esteem. The new Golf R will be on a par with the S3 , but watch how quick it will depreciate.

BMW's ....... Great pretenders , over hyped and overpriced

Ford Focus........... mmmmmmm, it's a Ford, RS or not

So the bottom line in my book is that, yes there is a lot of choice out there but TBH , Orange Seats and £37 ( ish ) grand or not, you get what you pay for and with Audi it means quality, value for money , less depreciation than all competitors , and actually a car that will impress people more than driving a Porsche . In my opinion anyway !

I hate to have to admit it, because I loved my "poor man's Porsche" Boxster S, but you are right, they dont really impress people all that much and many more on the roads tan S3s.

However I never drove a Porsche to impress other people, I drove it because it's a fantastic drivers car, something which an S3 doesn't even come close to.

p.s. 964s are still my favourite too!
