    I'm getting itchy feet - again ! and cannot make my mind up, the options are ..

    1.9 TDi Quattro
    1.9 TDi Auto

    2.5 TDi Quattro
    2.5 TDi Quattro Auto

    All will be chipped if I go for it, any opionions on the cars above ? I part fancy quattro as the current car MkV Golf GT TD chipped struggles to get the power down in the damp conditions, but then I fancy being lazy and letting the auto do all the work !

    1.9tdi Quattro - this would be the better option IMHO espesially for keeping the power down due to the 4wd,
    and you can alway get a remap on the 1.9 so you wouldnt need the heavier 2.5tdi

    Agreed, the 2.5 is too heavy in weight and on fuel.
    I can't get my 1.9 quattro to spin even in the wet, the clutch just slips, too much grip on the road!

    I'd agree that the quattro is needed to put down the power after a remap, dry or wet.

    I have had both, albeit in FWD form, and what I can say is over 20k miles in both they both returned the same mpg, well the 2.5tdi gave me 33mpg and the 1.9tdi (revo'd) gave me 34mpg.

    The 1.9tdi is a much lighter car up front and because of it handles alot better, and once chipped they are sthe same speed.
    Definitley go Quattro though, transforms the car, I would never buy another FWD car because the torque figures are getting too high these days for FWD to cope.

    I should point out, if you tootle around in the cars you can see 45mpg from the 1.9tdi, even when chipped, where as you can only get a maximun of 38-40mpg in the 2.5tdi. But if you like to enjoy the car the 1.9tdi is nearly the same, probably because it is working harder?

    I've had both in the avant form and my current car is the better one. It's a 2.5TDi Quattro SE Avant with the 6 speed manual. I went for the SE trim as you get the DIS as standard, then dropped it 25mm and put an RS4 rear antiroll bar on. Both were quattro and both remapped. The latest is a lot more fun to drive and still returns good mpg.

    So it seems quattro is the way to go but in terms of performance there isn't much in it between the 1.9 and 2.5 ... I would have thought the 2.5would be the quicker car especially with the remap.

    2.5tdi is limited with the remap. You need to make sure you get a later, 53 plate I think, 180bhp version to be able to map it properly. The 155 and 163bhp versions will not give very good gains becuase the injectors are too small.

    It would be 2004 + , other than the injectors what else is the difference between the 155/163 and 180 versions ...

    I don't think alot else is different?

    Just a thought, but have you considered a 190bhp s-line, you can get them for alot less money, remap it to 230bhp no problem, the handling is so, so much better and you can still get 30+ mpg out of them, even in Quattro guise.

    When I sold my S2, I gave serious consideration to the 2.5TDi quattro. In the end I plumped for a 3.0V6 petrol quattro as I couldn't quite go for the oil burning dark side. From my point of view, the only diesel to go for would be the later 2.5TDi quattro as stated in above posts for the chipping potential. Chip the b*gger and enjoy the phat wave of torque shredding your tyres!

    Why limit yourself to the 1.9, you'd only buy it and think "ooh, if I had had bought the 2.5 I'd have x more torque" anyway.

    Whatever you do, definitely get a quattro. I don't know about diesels and auto boxes, but for me a lot of the fun of driving is using the gears, but I'm guessing with the lower rev range of a diesel you'd be changing a heck of a lot?

    So, get a late 2.5TDi quattro auto and chip it like fury?

    I'd consider the 1.8T but think it would be too thirsty when coming from a Golf Diesel I think i'll keep trawling the net

    Well I got 33mpg in the 2.5tdi FWD avant over 20k miles, got 34mpg from my remapped 1.9tdi A6 avant, and 27mpg from the 3.0 cab. My brother used to use my 2.5tdi avant and he also got 34mpg from it, he now has a 1.8T s-line cab, and he is getting 30mpg from that. I would think the extra weight of the cab would give you about the same MPG as a 1.8T quattro saloon/avant.


    I would take them all out and see what you think. :)

    Yep I think thats what I need to do, it would be the noise of the 2.5 that would attract me, I did try the 120d and it was sooooo much more refined compared to the 2.0 TD in the Golf, its just the BM dealer was a little insulting with the PX offer !

    The 120d is awesome, the longer we have it the more I push it and understand it's handling etc.
    Very, very impressive car, in fact I sold my 535d sport touring after getting the 120d m-sport as I just didn't use it, kept taking the keys to the 1er. Also when remapped it turns it into something rather special, 6.5 sconds to 60mph and from 30 to 100mph it flies. Alot quicker than the 2.5tdi I had and being RWD you don't need the Quattro.

    You have a MkV Golf GT TD, probably one of the easiest cars to sell privately there is, why don't you just advertise it privately, put it on pistonheads first with pics etc. and on teh forums. Bet it sells in a fortnight.
    A £15 autotrader online ad would get rid of it in a few days too.
