Evidently, some don't...judging by the bullshit written on the subject...

    Oh, am I confusing you?
    Shame...

    I don't agree...
Mine ran 330 lb-ft for well over 2 years and was fine on a standard clutch...marginal, but fine.
At 320 lb-ft you could run it forever.

I've never driven an S3 that was as brutal coming on boost as my old S3...and that was really working the clutch...and it was still on it's original at 3 1/2 years old...and I thing still is now at nearly 6 years old.

Confusing me - who you kidding? Don't patronise me & you wouldn't agree, sorry I forgot.... you seem to know everything.

As for you not needing a new clutch. Woopy dah, lots of the remaped s3's have to have a new clutch. Might be something to do with individual driving styles, mileage & roads in the area

Mate, I think you need to calm down a little and show a bit less agression around here. You're showing the limit of your own knowledge and it's not all that in-depth.

If it's down to driving styles, then I can assure you that I've never come accross a more aggressive driver than Glen. If it's down to roads, then I can assure you, we have the best/twistiest/fastest/demanding roads in the country around here too.

I have no problems driving on a standard clutch and 335bhp. What's your point?

Back on topic - Ed, if you're going to change the springs on the car, then you're best changing the shocks too. If you're car's sitting lower on stiffer springs, then you've already partially compressed the shock and removed some of it's designed travel. It will also be trying to compensate for a much stiffer spring than standard so it won't work as well as it did previously. Saying that, alot of the TT forum guys don't bother changing the shocks - but then again they're a bunch of hairdressers :)

If you have to change the flywheel too, then it would be good to do the clutch at the same time while you're in there. Take S3Steve's advice and go for the Helix set-up. It's getting very good write-ups from some of the BT boys.

Lol, it's interesting that despite a slagging from some, Ed hasn't actually said he hasn't got insurance. Give the boy a break! I'll be interested in his car once it's done so don't go scaring him away with mis-informed posts!

Probably the best thing thats been said on this thread for awhile.

What exactly has Ed done to deserve so much hostility in any thread he seems to start recently?

I can understand why people would like to give the best advice, but when it becomes so hostile, I wonder if an air of jealousy is staring to creep in somewhere.

Nahh northern scotland has some of the best roads you will ever drive on.

Also some that you're the most likely to die on if you get it wrong tho!

    Nice one :icon_thumright:

To be fair Ed, I think you've been let down a little by APS. They're generally very good, but it should be up to them to tell you whether or not your car is fit to handle that much power. That way you'd have a better idea how much all this is going to cost BEFORE they start and allow you to make the decision to get it done or not.

Good man. Work hard and you deserve the toys it brings. I asked the insurance question out of genuine interest, not to expose you as a non-declarer.

I'm wondering if some of the more sniping comments are borne out of jealousy?

You know...you really are a boring individual.

    I agree...and lots don't.
I couldn't really give a toss...I'm just pointing out practical experiences having put big torque through a standard clutch for a few years?
What gems of experience can you offer?
Because thus far all you seem to offer is attitude.

    No **** Sherlock!

But also to do with torque delivery...which I'll not bother going into as it'll blind you with statistics.

And the danger element is what makes you realise you are alive....challenging roads are the most fun, for sure.

I said It was probably bank of mum and dad, as 99% of the time, especially in Berkshire it is.

It just astounds me that someone that has the knowledge to earn enough to pay for such things, actually has no idea what they have just bought. Me personally, I treat money with respect, and will investigate before spending 5K on something I may or may not need.

spoke to ed today, looks like i wont have my car back for Saturday! they still don't no what the noise is, they have had the engine out etc, now are measuring some engine components to check it all over, if there is nothing wrong they are gonna put it back together and change the clutch and hopefully it will stop the rattle! not really very happy with aps, I'm spending allot of money but every time i talk to them they say they are juggling my car between other jobs they have got, I've had it booked it for two months. i think they should have dedicated their time to my car really! now had it two weeks and by the sounds of things they have only taken things out not even started putting it back together yet IE new turbo!

Seen a few thrust washers fall out and break up, about 5 from memory, and all have been 1.8tQ set ups

Easy to see as when you take up drive the crank moves alot back and forth
There will be alot of end float in the crank too if the engine is stripped

If they are unsure they can pop the sump off and have a look, might have little bits of metal in the sump

Bottom end rebuild really, also depends on how much damage is done
If your are in the middle of a major BHP increase this is the time to uprate everything.

When ever you get into this kind of work the hrs roll on and the ££phr pile up

2 thing to look for is cost and gaurantee on there work
How much is a short engine going to cost??
Do you trust them...i.e the way you been treated so far by them

    Let us know

from what they have said tho its not bottom end or big end, they dont really no what it is! i could really feel it through the clutch pedal tho, ie not when engaging the clutch but if u just rest your foot on it so you take up the slack!
