anyone advise on the best oil for my a3 2.0 tdi 170 quattro,halfords told me castrol 5-40, but i have a feeling it should be 5-30, please help!

I'm using 5w30 and that's the recommended one for 2.0tdi 140pd engine if that helps.

never mind the viscoscity - it has to be VW approved. Even Castrol make three different 5W30s - one is VW approved, one Ford approved and one Mercedes.

It also varies depending on whether you are on the fixed 12 month service interval or variable servicing.

In a nutshell, if you go for VW507.00 approved spec fully synthetic 5w30, you will be OK, whatever service interval you are on.....

But it has to have the VW 507.00 spec approval - as even the older VW506.01 spec is only OK for earlier cars without a particulate filter.

So you need to make sure it says at least VW507.00 on it to be sure...
