I have been using 0w40 in my Audi A3 1.8t (98) - is this the correct oil or is it to thin?

    That is fine.............I use Mobil 1 0W40.

You have to make sure its got the 503 01 stamp of aproval, as the engine requires this specific type and Mobil 1 I know for sure complies.

    to sum up:

    number before W:
gives viscosity when cold, smaller number gives thinner oil

    number after W:
gives viscosity at 100 deg cent., larger number gives thicker oil.
thus xW40 is thinner than xW60, but then again xW60 lubricates better at higher temps.

  4. I use only 10-60 get 5 litre Castrol tws later today. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif
On track days 0-40 is to thin I think.

I had Mobil 1 in my S3 for 9000 miles, not a problem, when I got it serviced I requested that the change the oil but with the same Mobil but I was told they're not allowed, only approved VAG parts can be used, they put in 4.5 litres of Castol 3,500 miles ago and now it's down to the minimum level! is this some sort of racket? or does the castrol burn easier? also can hotter weather contribute to higher oil usage?

it on the long life service btw.
