Hi all! Regarding 2.0 tdi oil pump fails! How many people have actually had this issue? Ive read all the stuff on the Internet which scared the hell out of me! Been worried about it! So I went to see a very good friend today who is the director of Ron turnbull vw audi seat skoda garage in Middlesbrough! ( I can highly recommend this garage if you need a good Indy and that's not just coz of the friendship thing these guys know their stuff) I asked him about the problem and asked if he would have a look at mine! His reaction was not what I was expecting! He told me that from 2005 until 2013 he has at the very most done 15 cars with either the chain drive failure or later gear driven balancer shaft hex bar issue! Due to the amount of customers he has he thinks that this is not even an issue! He told me not to worrie about it and said he didn't want to take money of me for this to be done! He would not say the same to you if you wanted the work done as I said he is a friend! So how many 2.0 owners have actually had this happen to them?? 15 cars in 9 years seems to me to be insignificant number in the scheme of things!

I take it he's not too busy in his garage ! I have done about 2 dozens of the dreaded oil pumps/balancer shafts and i ain't even have a garage ! I will do a 2.0 Tdi quattro this week, no problem with low oil pressure as yet but it's just preventative maintenance ! Doing a clutch job at the same time so it's easier to pull the engine out and do it all at the same time whilst the engine is off !

No disrespect to Ron Turnbull but I'd say that was a lot (we don't know of any failures when the B8 came out) for a back street garage in Middlesbrough. At the risk of sounding rude, which I'm not intending to, people with Audi's maybe more likely to go to the dealer or indie's at more respectable locations (I'm not having a go at his service).

The guy at Vasstech said he has had an increasing number of them.

I'm not trying to say this is not an issue or even that it is an acceptable thing for this vital part to fail I'm really trying to decide wether or not to get mine done i have an a 6 2.0 140 on a 2007 thing is I bought it direct from audi and have a 1 year unlimited mileage warranty on the car and don't want to get it done until the warranty is up the car has 70000 miles on at the moment! Has anybody had problems with warranty not paying out if this fails?

no disrespect to you either! As for going to a main dealer! My brother spent 4 years working as a tech at Ron turnbull then moved on to Teesside audi to become a master tech ! He is of the opinion that the service he gave to customers at the independent was far superior than that at audi and he would recommend an independent to anyone over the dealer!

Someone who used to be on the forums managed to get the warranty company to pay up but only after a long and arduous fight. Seeing as you have a 2007, I would get the sump taken off and the hex shaft inspected. If the gears are fine then just change the hex shaft. The money will come in if the gears are losing their teeth but better you find out what state it's at now rather than waiting as you don't usually get signs it's going.

i was told that you can tell if it is starting to go on the gear driven hex shaft as it will start to sound slightly different! Is this the case! Not as noticeable as the chain drive tensioner fail or do you need to be a trained tech to detect this slight change?

Personally I wouldn't risk it. Diesels are noisy and you'll constantly be worrying there is a slight engine noise. Having an inspection done will put your mind at rest and show you what state it's in. At least you don't have a chain which is the worst of the bunch.

Agreed and for peace of mind if it was my car I would have the sump off and have it inspected.

please dont shoot me down in flames boys if i have this wrong but wasnt it just the pre 2007 engines that were chain driven and the ones with problems not the 2007 onwards as they were revised spur gear driven units?

2005-some 2006 have the chain and the hex shaft problem. 2006-2008 have the hex shaft problem and possible gear tooth being worn problem.

As a guide the chain driven units are the BLB coded engines from 2005 and possibly into early 2006.The gear driven units came in during 2006. All the gear driven units still fail, just not as regularly as the chain driven units.

The bulk of forum posts are from diesel owners but I have had contact from a couple of petrol owners with hex shaft wear problems. However, look on Autotrader and the vast bulk of 2nd hands are diesel.

have asked audi if this has been done on my car!!! The reply I got off them was that they have only ever done one car with this problem that they know of! So wasting my time there! Luckily the previous owner of my car only lives 15 miles from where I do so I'm going to pop round and ask them if this has been done! Watch this space! We need to start a thread (has your oil pump failed ) to get an idea on no.s
