Fitted my catch can yesterday, what is the black round thing for that goes in the tip? as it blew both ways and it looks like some kind of valve? just wondered if mine was goosed:blink:
That bloody L shaped pipe that goes into the block was a right pain getting back in, serves me right for not taking the manni off

You plumbed the catch can back into the TIP or to the atmosphere?

Not only that but its de-oxygeninated air, fuel of oily fumes.

Spoke to bill and he advised best to atmosphere it, ive got my venting under the bulk head just above the steering rack, car loves it, pulls sooo much better nar. Only problem im having is the catch can seems to have a unknown leak coming from it and its giving of a smell, think i need to make a gasket for it as the thing doesnt seem to have one.

I think the smell will be the venting to atmosphere?

I'm pretty sure is a Venturi tube, it helps create a vacuum. At least that what it looked liked to me IIRC

You got any pics of yours Dani?
I'm thinking would it be a good idea to create a sticky full of everyones pics and some step by step pics, makes it simpler for folk like me wanting to do it

I fitted one, but have since removed it. It was a metal jobber, and I found that in the cold weather, the thing filled up with more condensation than oil!

Cold metal, warm engine bay = annoying amounts of water. Boooo.

I did notice a lot more water in the can during the really cold months but it's not so bad now. I'm amazed at how much reaches the can. I empty a small cups worth every 2 weeks.

Thanks Dani if you get some pics mate. After I've finished my current jobs this is my next priority, il scour the huge catch can group buy thread too.

Karl I fitted my new boost hoses a few weeks ago and when I checked them this weekend they were clean as a whistle. The catch can is a good mod.

Have another read of the catch can thread, it's a lot simpler that it looks. I'm doing work to my motor tonight so I'll take some pics and also do a simplified diagram of how the hoses run. You bought one of the cans from the group buy didn't you?

I had a serious headache from that thread but as soon as you've ripped out all the old oil system the new simplified route makes perfect sense. I ended up trawling through that whole thread and cutting and pasting all the important bits and pics into a word doc to use as a guide. Not sure where that is now so I'll try my best to explain it tomorrow when I have some pics.

Well its ideal for me, i do 2 X 6 mile short trips a day so the condensation in the rocker gets it large, so hopefully my can will be catching this, if it means emptying water weekly, so be it.... its better than condensation watering the oil down, day in... day out.
@Karl the thread is messy, :think:but like westle says once you rip it all out , it all falls into place and makes sense.:)

I did the same thing. Used it for 2-3 months and its been sat in the spare room ever since.
I did use it during the snow and cycled up to dartmoor.

Looking at this catch-can/CCV divert, I'm asumming it can be used on a diesel but can you use the water catch cans from compressors?

In principle yes but i doubt you would get the inlet and outlets big enough they need to be 15mm+

Ok Karl just for you here is a simplified picture of the can pipe route. I thought more photos would just confuse you even more. You can basically run the hose anyway you want, over or under what you want as long as it connects together like this. Please forgive my child like paint skills ;)

That looks plumbed backwards to me.

The TIP should be going to the top of the catch can, so it only gets vapour/gas. With your drawing, the oil droplets would be sucked into TIP anyway, as they have to fall past the TIP outlet.

There a re 2 other bits to do apart from plumbing in the above.

    1. - Block off the hose in the middle underneath the inlet mani. This can just be done by jubaleeing in a bolt.

    2. - Put a 1 way valve in to the brake servo live that comes of the left hand side of the inlet mani.

When you get round to doing this just let me know and I'll help you out but i'm sure you'll be fine ;)

I was looking to do this mod but am still unsure.. can i buy a catch can from ebay that has inlet/outlet diameters of 15mm? or do i need a bigger one?

Also which is the brake servo line and where can i get a 1 way valve for it?

Sorry if the answers to my questions are in the other thread but i cant seem to find them.

The break servo line runs off of the left hand side of the inlet mani. You can re-use the one way valve that is already there. See the guide above and the oil catch can thread on here.

I've only had my s3 2 months and I'm also finding it's suffering a lot from condensation and sludge on the oil filler cap and in the breather pipes. My drive to work is only 3 miles and yes I do have a bike, but I'm a fair weather biker, and I'm enjoying the s3 too much to go to the peddal power!

Anyone got any pics of their install to show off? Where's the best place to buy a catch can from most the ones I'm seeing are for 8p rather than 8L.... I'm obviously looking in the wrong places!
