oil catch can install

    hi all, i have searched my backside off and still cant find what i'm after.... could any of you great people ;) help me by telling/showing me where i am to pipe my oil catch can please? thanks in advance Damo

    Theres not much out there on these you need to delete all piping to manifold from block breather pipe, pipe off from there to your catch can then vent off to the tip by piping to the metal pipe that runs round the back of the head that goes to the turbo intake pipe !!!

    or sames as above but blanking the turbo intake pipe and removing the metal pipe and just routinga pipe towards the rear of the subframe, and you also need a suitable location if i was to do it id pop it under the coolant tank as its only 3 screws to remove the tank and also should be easy enough to drain off when servicing !!

    Thanks for replying ;) when you say delete all piping all there is, is the pipe from block which goes to a T which then goes to hard pipe (tip) and to inlet manifold. Do I come off the T then to hard pipe leaving pipe to inlet or do I remove T and go from main pipe to hard pipe? Thanks for your help

    Remove the t piece and you could also remove the hard pipe then pipe catch can off to the hockey puck on the TIP with some silicone hose, delete the tank vent piping aswell just cleans the bay up abit.

    Do NOT remove the crankcase hose to intake manifold. This is why there is a T there. It helps draw vacuum from the crankcase when the TB is closed (idle).

    Yes but if your venting to intake pipe surely the catch can setup like this will do the same job ??

    As if you do it after the 'T' your defeating the object of the catch can arent you as oil will be still in the vapours going to the manifold ??

    i may be wrong (young and learning :) )

    Ok so what if I pipe the tank to main breather before T thus original pipes are still as per.

    Same old argument going over and aver. Oil vapour in the air intake lowers octane ratings and increases dirt in the intake, it also heats it up.

    There are lots of atricles on the web defending both points of view but the best for performance is venting to atmosphere, this will lower intake temperatures and maintain fuel octane. If you want to vacuum your crank case the exhaust is a better place to do it although you must use a flashback arrester to stop backfires entering your crank case. Even with a catch can trying to condensate some of the oil (you need a wire gauze inside not just an empty can) you will still lower the octane rating of the fuel and heat up intake temps.

    Manufacturers vent crank case to the inlet to burn off toxins because its in the build regs (construction and use) that they cannot vent these to atmosphere.

    Let me see If I get this right, std setup is already vented back to the exhaust through TIP if I was to use can with a breather this would vent to atmosphere. Which would you suggest I use and would you say if I had it before T would it still work? Thank you all for your help ;)

    Forgot to add should I remove and blank inlet to TIP or keep that with the setup.

    I'm not overly familiar with the audi setup but yes you should block off the hole in the throttle intake pipe and then run the blow off from the crank case to the catch can. There are usually 2 pipes to the crank case, one will be at atmospheric presure and filtered to draw air into the crank case and the other will be going into the inlet under vacuum and will have an oil trap. together these draw air through the crank case do draw dirty air out, there is no real vacuum going on. In reality both need to be disconnected from the intake system and vented to the catch tank then the catch can must be vented to atmoshpere. With this setup you will have no air flow through the crank case and gasses will only be vented by windage and pressure differences (hot air expanding out of the crank case). Do not block up the crank case breathers or seal the catch can as this will cause all sorts of problems with the air pressure inside the engine.
