I've just got back from a 300 mile round trip, most;y motorways and a-roads. 32mpg. Mrs Seeker's 2.4 petrol does better than that.

And then last night, my 'quattro' lost grip at 30mph on a wet roundabout and nearly put me on the verge.

Not very happy with it. I wish I'd spent half the money this has cost me on a 3.0 petrol.

Something not right there mate, I did a very similar trip recently and I my worst estimate 41mpg, I also have a faulty temperature reading which can affect the consumption.

quattro is not a get out of sh!t free card! If you hit a patch of oil/diesel your going to be a passenger, also sh!t tyres are not going to help.

    I should say so.

Well since I've had it, it's had a new thermostat fitted and it went from reading 70 to 90. I can't think what else is causing the problems. I do have to say, I am less than happy.

32mpg is impressive... that must be about 120mph average!

Quattro is not get out of stupid driving for free: as stated, massively dependant on having decent tyres that, when they break traction, will do so progressively: wet roundabouts are usually a good space for 4-wheel drifting, if they're wide enough to get sideways.... but obviously make sure the tiptronic doesn't change down when you're balancing a slide on the throttle... and even without the threat of tiptronic gear changes, keeping the turbo boost even is a bit tough.... probably safest to save that sort of stuff for the snow!

Treads good and I had 2 new ones fitted when I bought it - the garage used "Triangle" make tyres which looking on the net are, surprise, surprise, ****e.

I am loathed to spend £500 on 4 new tyres if the bloody thing is going to skint me on fuel.

I don't know what the roads were like where you were, but we had quite a lot of rain after a dry spell, and as always the roads were pretty slippy! Quattro drive only helps you put the power down better, it doesn't give you any more lateral or braking grip as I'm sure you know.

My all time average on a manual 2.5Q is 32 mpg, depending how you calcualted yours my DIS can under read by 2 or more mpg. You need to drive it quite hard to get 32, but not that much so, they're really not economical engines!

My car doesn't have DIS. ;-)

When I do a brim-to-brim measure, my average is 28mpg which, whilst not brilliant, is only 5 mpg less than the a6 2.7TDI manual I had, so I can't complain about that.

This time, I'd covered 320 miles on 3/4 of a tank. Of that 220 was 'a run' and the other 100 was my normal driving profile. Doing the maths means that 100 miles was at 28mpg and the other 220 works out at about 34 mpg.

    Poor, very poor.

I agree, the 2.5 is a thirsty beast, and with tiptronic and quattro you've got the thirstiest set up!

Hmm. I had promised myself & Mrs Seeker to keep this for a while but TBH, I'm going to have to think hard to justify keeping it.

I don't know why people get so upset with the mpg of a 2.5 TDi?? Yes it's a diesel, but it's still a pretty big engine for a diesel, it has 6 cylinders, a permanent 4 wheel drive system to get the power to all 4 wheels, and it's a heavy car, so what do you expect?! If people are really that fussed about getting loads of mpg's for their money then they should of bought a 1.9 TDi in my opinion.

On average I get 36-38 mpg to and from work which is a 12 mile commute each way through towns or stop start traffic on dual carriage way, on a motorway run it creeps up to 44 usually, most I've had is 48 mpg. All of those figures I'm more than happy with! Even if I average very low 30's or even less with normal driving it doesn't bother me.

I bought the car because I was doing more fairly long distance driving, I've had nothing but performance cars before hand so I'm used to low or even shockingly low mpg figures I guess, but the main reason why I went for the 2.5 is because I hate the sound of 4 cylinder diesels, and I still wanted performance, which in my opinion the 2.5 gives! It also has a nice un-diesel like sound track when it's on song.

At the end of the day I think the petrol equivalent (probably the 3.0 petrol quattro) would give an average of low 20's to the gallon, so that's still a good 15+ mpg which I personally think is great considering they are probably neck and neck performance wise (going by a mapped 2.5 like mine)

You're spot on to be fair.

    Especially with the 1.9 comment!

Well, you're getting 8-10 mpg more than I am both on average and on a run and if I got them, I'd be happier too. And, if you're not driving a manual, I guess it proves there may be something wrong with it.

Maybe you just have a dodgy sensor or some faults which are logged on the car which need clearing via vcds? Might be worth having someone with vcds or a vag specialists check the car for any fault codes.

Your two main handling problems have been found:

Usually I try to replace all the tyres at the same time, to keep them withing the quattro threshold (4mm??).... and would DEFINTELY always keep them the same make, even with non-quattros.... I move mine front-rear if I see them wearing unevening (not been a problem on the quatttro.... but it was with the Golf GTI and the 3 series though:) )...
