You cant get a cheap cable to work on newer Audis as they have a CAN-bus communication system which requires a CAN enabled cable to talk to the car. The only cable I know of is the Ross tech USB one at £259.95(they do a serial one slightly cheaper).

    See here http://www.ross-tech.com/

and this is the cable I use and from where I bought it http://www.gendan.co.uk/product_VCHU.html.

Ross-Tech also offers an enthusiast grade CAN only cable:
    Micro-CAN

Gendan and other Ross-Tech UK distributors have this product.

Is the micro-CAN compatible with A3 2006 model?

I would not have suggested it as an alternative if it was not compatible.

Please see the A3 info page for assurance that it will work. The top of the chart states which interfaces work with the particular model and year.
