Nice idea, Ive done the nurburgring a couple of times and in the summer I actually live on the coast by nice/cannes. I would defo suggest from the ring, head towards switzerland, over the st bernadino pass (EPIC) that brings you out near Lake Como in italy. From there head south towards Savona, round Turin. After Turin you have ridiculously long straight motorways for miles with mad italian drivers flashing you from miles away and passing you at 120 mph. Then just before Savona you hit the hills and drop down on and incredible curvy fast dual carridgway until you are on the coast. Once on the coast the road from Savona to Monaco is cool bridge, tunnel, bridge, tunnel, bridge, tunnel and a sh*t load of apex corners. If you want a more in depth of which actual roads to take let me know.

I went a few weeks ago, stayed here:

Lindner Hotels & Resorts - HOTEL NÜRBURGRING

Brilliant hotel, £55 a night when I was there and its basically on the start/finish line. The manager there looks EXACTLLY like Gus Fring from Breaking Bad, seems like a psycho too. They have a casino downstairs which was sweet, I won enough to pay for the night and half the bar tab. Only had the one day there before going on to Frankfurt, woke up in the morning........closed the track!
Fog rolled in until about midday and they were doing maintenance. There was no way I was not going round, there are a few spots where you can get on the track so I just walked around it, hitting every apex perfectly. Got a time of about 1 hour 30 minutes....intense.

Seriously though, nothing will prepare you for the length and height difference of the track. From playing the track on the PS3 and watching laps on youtube and top gear, it was a massive surprise how steep some of the hills were.
If you do better than me and get to actually DRIVE a lap, I would try and get a bit of a heads-up by watching others laps on youtube. You will not learn it, it will take lots of laps to, but will give you an idea of where you can put the hammer down!

If you dont want to use your own car, give these guys a try:

Nordschleife race car rentals at the Nurburgring | Rent4Ring

This is where we woud have picked ours up from. They had a nice track spec MKV GTI and a Scirrocco R at reasonable prices.
If you've got the cash, get a sight lap from a pro.
There are tonnes of skid marks aimed straight at barriers (photo of a particularly nasty looking one below), and the amount of scrapes and paint on them makes you think twice about taking your own.
I came across a front headlight and some carbon fiber trim bits of an R8 while I was walking up the hill, just as I was lining up my turn into the carousel.

Also, a couple of hours away is Wolfsburg. Home of the VW factory: Start: www.autostadt.de
    Its pretty cool.

It will be EPIC, Driving in Europe is so much better, even in a right hand drive car.

Hotels in monaco.... not many cheap ones, a heck of a lot of expensive ones....
