    HI all

Had the fuel pump replaced on my 2002 s3 after it starting making 'whiney' noises

The replacement has subsequently started doing the same

I am getting 44mpg ( YES 44mpg) so clearly underfueling

    Maf has been changed

Any suggestions - Awesome have suggested its nothing to do with the pump but what else could have caused this to fail as it appears to have happened again

Could this have been caused by fuel tank contamination ?

I'm guessing you've changed the fuel filter and slapped some Redex/STP/Forte/any other brand fuel system cleaner through it?

Fuel filter ? just curious as to how that would help if the noise is coming from the pump itself

If the filter is blocked then it would stop fuel getting to the engine in correct amounts - causing your 44 MPG...

Also, if the pump is having to work twice as hard to force the fuel through at all, it may well whine. Another explanation is that the sound is pressure forcing it's way back through the pump due to a blockage.

I'd definitely change it, they're about 8 quid from a motor factors and should be changed regularly anyway to be fair.

If you've had the pump changed and are getting the same symptoms then it's unlikely to be the pump i'd say.

So fuel filter would be the first place I'd start...

I'm doing my fuel filter this weekend. My mate at work has an S3 and his filter was the original one from when the car came out the factory in 2002! It was so blocked it had split and was pissing fuel out everywhere.

Spoke to Audi and they dont even change it or sell the part! You have to buy the part from an independant parts place as its a bosch part.

I'm going to ensure that mine gets changed with every major service from now on.

I always change mine on a service, only after having a blockage myself though - like you said they get so full up with swarf and bits they just don't do what they should after a while!!

I like to run fuel system cleaner too funds dependent!! But the filter, all be it a pain to change (getting covered in fuel due to the fact I'm too much of a skin flint to buy fuel line clamps), for the sake of a few quid, it's well worth doing.

    Filter ordered

Where is it located ? Do I need to use fuel clamps ?

It's in front of the rear wheel on the drivers side under the side skirt.

Take out fuse 28 then turn the car on, it will stall after a few seconds without the fuse for the fuel pump. Open the fuel filler cap to de pressurise the system then you can remove the filter. You can do it without clamps but expect a tiny amount of fuel to come out so use a washing up bowl or bucket to collect it.

Well I have changed the fuel filter - no improvement

Its been suggested I might take a look at the Fuel pump regulator - is this something that is prone to issues ? and has anyone here changed one ?
