Hi guys,

So i have had my RS3 for less than 2 months, its got around 24k on the clock. It was bought from BMW Stratstone in Leeds.

Only modification i have done is lowering it on H+R springs.

Over the last month, i have heard this really annoying knocking/clunking noise when you press your foot on the accelerator and same happens when you go into reverse.

The car came with a 3 month warranty/guarantee from BMW, so the most obvious thing was to take it back to them for them to diagnose. They think its something internally in the gearbox and have suggested replacing it! At first i was thinking that is fine its under warranty but later they have said there is a claims limit of £500 and the rest of the cost i would have to cover... :wtf:im currently arguing with them about this!

They have also said that me lowering the car could have contributed to the problem :crushed:

I saw this thread about a possible noise - http://www.audi-sport.net/xf/thread...ay-a-common-lowered-a3-mk5-golf-issue.140360/

What do you guys think? Do you think it actually needs a gearbox or think it could be something loose?

I have booked it in at Audi for a proper diagnostics, as the guys at BMW are useless and have just said they think it needs a new gearbox.

Sounds like a dogbone - I'm sure Arkious will confirm has he's just had similar and replace to good effect and he'll give you chapter and verse.

Oh, and for me, raise your car back to STD as for me it looks sooooo much nicer - but then I'm old and think an 8P RS3 just as nice as it could be STD:

Hope this helps... :hi:

Thanks for getting back to me mate.

So supposedly bmw have had it up on the ramp and can hear the noise inside the gearbox, I'm far from convinced!

I'm going to put the standard springs back on before it goes back to the garage so they can't tell me they are the cause of the problem... Your wish is coming true haha.

I think that a GOOD move Bobby as for sure an Audi dealer will want the car as much as STD as possible, and that's from experience: and way to early to modify if you've an Audi Warranty, just sayin'.

That said, "really annoying knocking/clunking noise when you press your foot on the accelerator and same happens when you go into reverse" sure sounds like a dogbone mounting to me and fortunately for you it's on the OUTSIDE of the gearbox.

Just PM/write to Arkious and ask as I know he's just had a similar experience and resolution; he's now H A P P Y, so fingers crossed for you.

Me, still loving my Audi 8P Rs3, nothing in Audi Sales I'd swap it for, a proper Q-car is a de-badged 8P Audi RS3 - on STD springs/ride-height :whistle2:

PS: Hope you appreciate the STD ride height of mine as I can't fault it and wouldn't swap it for anything else whoever, whatever, anyone else thinks :yahoo:

Although id have to agree with John on the ride height, I'd love a progressive spring rather than the harsh stock spring and the only way to do that seems to be H&R or Eibach :D

But on the matter at hand, yes im fairly sure its the dogbone mount bush as we discussed. Get it jacked up and take a peek, I sent you the photo of mine to compare against and you will see how feeble it is.

Check the reviews, 100% recommended and even better after doing a clutch adaption reset via VCDS. Quite literally made mine feel new

So I have it booked in at Audi for next Thursday to investigate this knocking noise. In that time I will put the standard springs back on so it can't be used against me! Unfortunately I didn't have Audi warranty, it's Stratstone warranty from BMW.

I love the look of your car and tbh I love the Audi on standard springs as well. I'm just a sucker for lowered cars. Check out my bmw m3, it's become 1 with speed bumps

Thanks for the info, I'm going to get it jacked up and have a look at it over the next couple of days.

The reviews look amazing for that part, think I'll get it ordered anyway! And hopefully get Audi to do a clutch adaption.

Have a serious think about the 034 rear arb, too; makes a huge difference to handling and, for me, ride...

I just wished I'd fitted one years ago rather than last year:

ARB

That'd not do the EVO triangle at anywhere near pace, Bobby - whatever the occupants might think; init!

A bog STD RS3 would be there and back while these guys were tryin' to stop the boom, boom, boom of them rear rubbers greetin' the wheel arches; 'now what I'm sayin' like...

Nope, that for sure just wouldn't handle the EVO triangle so best it stays on that bricked level surface...

Which H&R springs do you have fitted by the way? Sport or Super Sport?

I have been thinking Eibach Sportline or H&R Sport

Haha! well glad it made you chuckle... I feel like I have spending handcuffs on, or that my paypal account is wearing a chastity belt hahaha

But hope yesterdays hospital visit went well for you both :)

interesting! so whats that going to cost? :S
So speaking to Audi there saying £2700 (includes 7 hour labour cost) £120 a hour there cost if I'm correct.

I will have to put it back to standard as don't want bmw to try wiggle there way out!

holy cow everything has extra zero's on for fun in the RS range haha.

Mine just came back from having its A/C pump changed and that cost £800 + labour (luckily covered under warranty)

Ye it's not great tbh. But it all depends what bmw say.

best of luck mate, hope you get it sorted

So bit of an update regarding this issue...

BMW Stratstone finally called me back and have advised me that they will do the work in there workshop as they have "Audi Specialist" working there... This was the same specialist who didnt spot the issue originally! But anyhow they work will come with a warranty, so at least if anything goes wrong in the future its down to them and cannot blame Audi!

I will be taking off my lowering springs so they cant use any excuse against me for warranty issues... I will refit them once i know the car is working the way it should be!

good to hear mate! Well my car was in to have its A/C pump changed and the noise still persists! So I am trying to get in contact regarding that as that was a £800 in parts alone warranty repair which has not fixed a thing :(

What noise still persists? Sounds an expensive bill for the fault to still occur.

It's 100% aircon related but it's very hard to describe and also intermittent, which is why it took me a few visits to Audi for them to diagnose.

It sounds like a whirring belt come gas leak if you could imagine that, but then it also has an occasional running liquid sound. The Audi technician said it was the pump the second he finally heard it but obviously it's not (and they have changed the pump because it's beautifully new haha). What's strange on my receipt though is that they put down every bolt, cover and belt etc they used but didn't specify an air con recharge. Now knowing Audi put EVERYTHING onto receipts it's making me think they didn't do it, but they would have had to or it just wouldn't be working at all surely?

Been trying to get in contact with them but can't at the moment

Hope you got your car sorted!

So had the bevel/transfer box replaced but the noise is still there!

It definitely sounds like something is loose, and is only there when gears change and under initial acceleration.

They have told me to drive it for a few days, see how I get on and if it's not any better then they will offer me a refund.

You think it could be anything to do with the propshaft? But surely they checked that?!

Update:

I went over a bumpy road today and there was definitely a knocking/rattle coming from underneath.

Also regarding the propshaft, if they changed the bevel/transfer box then the bolts would have been inspected if im correct?

My order for the 034 Billet DogBone Mount insert came through yesterday, im hopefully going to get that fitted asap.

Anyone else have any thoughts on this? As its driving me mad!

knocking on a bumpy road would suggest to me ARB links but directly from underneath I'm not sure

Update on this thread -

The car went to Audi on Wednesday to investigate why the knocking noise is still present, the technicians found that the Bevel box HAD NOT been changed and only the driveshaft had been changed. I was fuming, and was on the phone to BMW straight away, advising them that the confirmed in writing that the Bevel box had been changed and it in fact had not. They insisted in was a break down in communication between parts and service but in my mind i think they were trying to save themselves a bob or 2!.

So other the past 2 days i've been on the phone to several different people to try and get this issue resolved! Stratstone have been so unhelpful in all this, they give BMW a bad name! They wouldn't rectify the problem they originally agree to do and confirmed they did. They wanted guarantee from Audi that if they changed the box that this issue would go away, but Audi could not do that. I left the car at Audi and told BMW Stratstone that they need to get this sorted, i don't care who fixes it but it needs to be done ASAP!

In the mean time BMW rang Audi to try see if they would contribute towards the cost as it is such a low mileage car and the age of the car, but Audi insisted they could not. He then proceeded to ring Audi UK, and they advised him that the original owner of the car, bought the additional extended 2 year warranty with the car which wasn't due to run out till 23rd June 2017! I COULDN'T BELIEVE IT! Audi completely missed this when it first ever went in for a health check and the 2nd time it went in for this noise.

I am currently in the middle of writing a complaint letter to BMW, Stratstone and to Audi UK for all the hassle and inconvenience they have caused me!

I'm just happy the car is now getting fixed at Audi!

well at least its getting looked at I guess, but that's ridiculous how they have gone on... especially telling you they had changed it and hadn't! I fear that sort of thing happens at small garages during MOT's but not big dealerships :/

On a side note, my car is in again (visit number 4) for the same A/C issue!

Im glad its getting looked at but disappointed at the service provided by both Stratstone BMW and Audi for not advising me of the warranty! I cant believe they lied to me too but i will be following it up to understand what went wrong! They are currently fitting the new Bevel box, so lets hope this sorts the issue out!

Really, have they told you what it could be?

This noise hasn't gone away yet, so far work which has been carried out -

New bevel/transfer box
Fitted 034 motorsport dogbone insert
Clutch adaption done by Audi Huddersfield.

Still when i accelerate/deaccelerate i get a knocking noise, they have told me a million times its normal but it cant be. A £45k brand new making a knocking noise, that cant be right? Plus a clear metal rattling noise can be heard from the lower front passenger side of the car whilst driving.

Its driving me mad, so i have asked Huddersfield Audi to get hold of a RS3 at there Bradford branch and prove to me if this is a characteristic of the RS3 DSG box.

Finally got the car back from Audi after 8 days!

After God knows how many road test, it ended up being the gearbox mount under the air box side of the car. The noise has finally gone.

It's been a headache but least it was all done under warranty! Happy days.

Congratulation that you finally sort out the noise, it is really difficult to find out where it comes from!
