    Hi,

Recently my S3 has felt very low on power and also using a lot of oil - 1-2ltrs per 500miles.

My local Audi specialist advised a new turbo - on removing mine I found a big crack in the housing so this was replaced with a nearly new replacement turbo.

My car felt great for 2weeks - all the power was back but still using oil. Recently the power has gone again - feels like it has about 150bhp. This is really strange - why o.k for 2weeks then all boost has gone again???

The car has seen 2 Audi specialist and a local garage - no one has any idea what the problem is.

Has anyone got any idea? I have changed the MAF + Turbo, no air leeks as far as I can see.

    Thanks,

    James

There's a chance that the exhaust manifold is also now cracked. It can happen sometimes when replacing the turbo.

Maybe but it was fine for 1000 miles and now no power again. Surely if the manifold was damaged this would show immediately?

    Maybe...

Cracks can propagate through heat expansion and contraction in the metal. Could have been a small crack that's getting bigger.

Have you plugged in VAG-COM to see if you have any errors?

No not since the new turbo - though it was all fixed.

I was thinking - warn piston rings leading to high oil usage, low oil damaged the turbo causing lack of power. Replacing turbo briefly improved performance but this has now been damaged again?

    Does this sound feasable?

Is the excess oil use causing smoking, i.e it's burning it? Or is it leaving a slick in your drive or along the bottom of the car i.e leaking when it's on the move. You really need to track down where all that oil is going.
I know the S3 can be known to use a bit of lube but that amount is truly excessive i'd say.

The oil is leaving throught the exhaust it seems to litterally spray out on the warm up cycle.

I put my hand on the under side of the turbo earlier when the car was cold to feel for a loose boost pipe, the turbo was soaked with oil. There is also a lot of oil present in the air pipes on both sides of the turbo ie TIP side and MAF side but mainly TIP side.

    Oh dear

I thinks its also burning oil as I sometimes see a puff of smoke and I'm averaging 35mpg!!

Possibly badly warn valve guides, if its literally spraying out the exhaust bad news all round really - you're cat will soon be dead too. Have a compression or leak down test done to check the piston rings.
