Come over from BMW scene and looking to buy a fairly cheap estate so looking at an A4 B5 1.9 TDI 110bhp Quattro Avant in Black.

I have found one but it has 185k on the clock. Now will this mean its going to be no end of problems? How do the B5's hold up to high miles? Whats the 1.9TDI engine like?

Also what would you guys consider a fair price for this car to be?

    Thanks, Simon

Its a 1996. What year is the facelift and what changes take place with it?

    facelift is 99>

Main exterior changes are the one piece headlights, different grille, different door handles and side mouldings, slight changes to the bootlid on saloons and the front and rear bumpers

interior gets a new console and other details like the headlining/interior lighting.

engine is good, fuel pump is the thing you need to look out for on those engines. costly to buy and even more so if you get someone to fit it for you

Oh great. Is there any of these modern diesels that dont fail fuel pumps. Did one on an astra van once and was a pig of a job.

I'm going to try and find a lower milage example but they seem rare with quattro?
I've heard the 1.9 is more reliable than the 2.5.

i've never actaully heard of a pump failure on a 1.9...

2.5's seem a bit more susceptible, but the 4cyl bosch pump seems quite robust tbh.

Thanks for the info, seems like the 1.9 is very reliable then? Not the pd.

Altough i have seen a nice and low milage 2.5, but i'm just worried about camshafts, pumps going on me and it costing me an arm and a leg.

PD doesnt have a fuel pump as such, just a lift pump in the tank.

Well i think i've decided on holding out for a nice clean low milage 1.9 tdi quattro in avant form but b5 shape. I have around 2.5k to spend but for that money would like to get one of the last b5's. Were the last ones 2001?

What year did the PD 1.9's come in, and they are the better engine to go for right? Still 110BHP?

    Thanks

£2.5k should see you with a nice car. Buy on condition though not on mileage.

Love my A4 to bits even though I came to own it by accident. I wanted a Focus ST170 estate but was struggling to find one that wasn't over priced or a bit battered and while looking I picked up an A4 Avant 1.6. Despite being dog slow I loved it and when I found a ST170 I ended up buying the 1.8T saloon I know have. Now when it comes up to change I'm very keen to get another (although the lure if a Mitsubishi Evo is getting hard to ignore)
