Hi everyone been to the Stealers this mornig regarding my car running excessive boost pressure causing it to go into limp mode. Suprise Suprise they have told me I need a new turbo as they claim the vaines are sticking. This will be my 3rd turbo in 36000 thousand miles the last one mas fitted at 19,180 miles. They are taking the p*ss! I have contacted Audi Customer care and I am currently awaiting an outcome. What gets me, the dealers have not offered an explanation or even questioned why the car keeps requiring turbos. Does anyone know what could be causing these turbos to fail. The car is on the standard map and hasn't been modified in any way.
    Cheers Cooky :tocktock:

Sticky vains can be cleaned quite easily if that is the only issue but turbos don`t normally get that issue untill they have done 80,000 + miles so something is wrong with your car.

It would suggest that you car is producing an excess amount of soot, if that is what was wrong with the other two turbos as well.

They can be cleaned up though, but I suspect that the Audi stock answer is to replace it. If it is outside of warranty it may be worth finding your local VAG specialist and getting a quote to have the turbo vanes cleaned.

I suspect it's typical Audi/VW/VAG throwing parts at a car because there 'techies' have no idea what the problem is.. if it doesn't show up on there floppy disk, they are clueless. :slap:

Hello Cooky, many things can affect the life of your turbo. 3 does sound excessive though! Were they all replaced for sticky vaines? Oil leaks and being noisey are also common faults.

What quality oil are you using? Are you always checking the oil level - you'll know that those engines need regular top up. Also, was the feed pipe replaced? Any restrictions in oil supply and the turbo will always be the first to go.

hi, on my third turbo in 18 months, last time i changed it i give the oil feed pipe a blast out with compressed air and it did seem partially blocked. can only presume bad maintanance and the use of incorrect grade oil in its previous life. its so important to use quality oil of the right grade in any turbo engine. also ive read some good reports on innotec turbo cleaner. theres two things you can try at little cost before turbo replacement

Hi the first turbo was whining excessively and was replaced at 19180 miles the current one is the one with the sticking vaines the car is always serviced at the main dealers it has mobil one esp oil in it long life and I always check the oil regularly. Ive no idea if the oil feed pipe was replaced as the work was done under warranty. Having done a bit of research sticking vaines are usually a result of the engine over sooting this current turbo hasn't covered 17,000 miles yet, as the present mileage is 36300 so for it to be sooted up is a little strange, bearing in mind its on the standard map it shouldn't be doing. So to me its pointing to something else thats amiss.

Hi. I had a mk. 4 GT TDi 150 with a similar problem. Amongst all the other known PD 150 faults (eating the cam shaft etc etc) was the fact that after 60k miles mine kept overboosting and going into limp home mode. VW only said "computer says new turbo...".
My quality local independent (Fuel Injection Services in Ormskirk, Lancs) fixed it in the end by getting the turbo back to Garrett down the road in Skem. Apparently the oil flow through the turbo was not perfect, so Garrett modified the flow & cleaned the unit up. Lasted for another 40k before the problem just started to recur, so I chopped it in.

    Good luck with Audi.

My A6 2.0 tdi had 4 turbos in total and that had started to whine when I sold it. (They started whining quietly that only I heard but wow very noisy in the end and was worried the bearings would fire out! so got it changed each time) Mine was mapped but well within limits for the boost. Had all of them changed at Audi but not all under warranty!!!(£2k each!!!) They claimed to have changed the feeder pipe at the time but the guy in service claimed it was the bearings going each time.. but on 4!!!!! Unless there was a really bad batch of these things it seems a very weak part. So sold it and got the 3.2 with no turbo lol, least that doesnt have one to go lol

Oh and mine never smoked/sooty but had high mileage!

Sarah you need spanking for taking your car to an Audi dealer to get work done out of warrenty :asskicking:. If you car killed four turbos something is obviously wrong with the engine to cause that. To just replace the broken part without finding out why it keeps braking is a typical dealer thing to do.

Ive been waiting since Tuesday but I finally got the phone call from Audi customer car today saying they would fit me a new turbo as a goodwill gesture due to fact that the last turbo has only done 16909miles. All labour and parts covered, to say the least i'm chuffed to bits, I'm also going to get a lottery ticket!!

lol, yeh maybe I did get a spanking lol

Well after getting the first one done, each one came with a warranty (2 years) and I did keep asking for reasons. One went before being mapped the others after but it also had a porous cylinder head which was also replaced (I got £500 knocked off it the head as again it was out of warranty! I Dont learn do i!!!) Eventually and sadly (cos I like the A6, nice n big) sold it and got a Beama lol, that lasted about 4 months!!!! Now back to Audi and loving it!!!
