PHANTOMS FINAL THOUGHT!

For 16k list price full spec, the Clio 197 with cup packs is a fantastic car , fun , put's a smile on your face , and handles stunningly , it even has Brembo brakes!

French cars are not as bad as people think......ok the panels are made out of melted down plastic knives and forks , and the electrics are rubbish , but no worse then anything else at this price point!

As for pace , std for std i do think there will be nothing in it between a 8l S3 and a 197 untill silly speeds then the S3 should pull as the Clio runs out of puff!

Get on twisty b-roads or the track and it's game over, Cliio wins!

The S3's are decent cars, I'm sure a lot of people would like to have one. I had mine for two months before I gave up and bought an R32, which is a lot better in standard form. The S3 from the factory is a barge, it understeers like a pig, the ride is harsh, it's wallowy and doesn't inspire confidence. The interior is dull, and the engine is coarse and unrefined, not to mention quite thirsty. I'm not saying it's a bad car by any means, but in terms of driver enjoyment compared to the Clio Sport it's not in the same league. If you just learn to accept that the S3 is a comfortable, run of the mill hatchback with nice seats and flared wheelarches, you'll be better for it, and won't need to try and defend it to the hilt when people say it's really not that great. Your last post here pretty much sums up what's wrong with the S3; it needs so much work on it to make it a competent drivers car.

You're a young lad, you should be happy with an S3 at your age, don't waste your time deluding yourself that it's the best thing since sliced bread, and just see it for what it is.

Nicely put.

It's a good car. Not a great car.
It can be made much, much better and end up very able, competent and quick...but as a drivers car, it's dull as dishwater, and sadly, that doesn't change no matter what you do.

Don't do it!!

You'll end up realising that they're very fun to drive, nice to sit in if a bit plasticy, and cheap to buy.

then you'll think about it falling to bits - but it wont until its a bit older and you have a 3 year warranty....

then you'll think about the depreciation - but they're not that expensive anyway, and in real terms you dont really lose any more money on any car unless you buy something stupid like a 7 series bmw or a phaeton

then you'll end up buying the ****** thing.

Can you tell i like em? why havent i got one?

I'm 24 trying to buy a house and cant even nearly afford one lol

Plus i'd prefer an ST-3, pre facelift
 
im warrming to the front, its just the back end and the interior thats been put together by stevie wonder..... wait till these cars are 3 years old and take a look at the worn buttons that have had normal use.... the dash which has scratches from an knat with a crusty **** walking over it and scratching the surface....

this being said, im in no doubt this car goes like stink and handles like rollercoaster..... however, if i wanted this, id go for an evo which wouldnt be outclassed at the side of this horrendous french piece of ****...... yes again this may out handle an evo, i dont honestly know..... but the looks of this car are a big let down and cannot be amended through speed or handling alone.... french have never been able to design cars properly.... apart from the odd 'got lucky' car..... they are simply blind....rock on....and IMO of course:salute:
 
You're way off the mark with the buttons etc - it's more electrical things that are your worry - and when it gets to about 5 years old bits of trim falling off etc lol

I take your point about the evo, but your going into a different league again there.

NickPap, get a job in construction 3.30 finish on a friday lol

Will agree to disagree on that me thinks :salute:, the buttons like the rest of the platic are ****....

my point was with the Evo is that it handles well and goes like stink...... just what the megane does.... so why not go into this different league above the megane, all your gonna get is exactly the same charactaristics (but uglier car) if you go for the Renault minus the depreciation......... stupid option........ :keule::fart:

Mate your cars ****** if your getting beat by a clio. Ive had loads of straight line races on the motorway and im sorry but the S3 is quicker by quite a bit.

Hint which might give the game away.

Top speed S3 = 151mph
Top Speed Clio = 134mph

When you were going up this hill the clio probably dropped a few gears. were you pottering around in 6th?

We were referring to how a Clio 182/197 etc will 'do' corners like an S3 can only dream of.
Nobody has said an S3 isn't faster up to speeds that are largely irrelevant.

But on real roads, in the real world, a well driven Clio will give a std S3 driver a fright.
Not boring motorway crap...but driven where roads have bends.

...and don't try and tell me an S3 is as good and as much fun through the twisties. Just don't...
 
Only weight and a different gear ratio will be the answer for this...
On my 8P and am still to struggle with a Clio, I guess more weight but power slightly compensates it... But they are great little cars....

like Glen said, read the ****** posts doood, one i wasnt doing a constant speed and then accelerating....i was almost from a standing start so completely different scenario than a motorway...... i.e the boost doesnt help as much at the top end IMO..... two..... i have a boost leak, unsure what this has done to my car, however, it doesnt affect it that much and whos to say the clio wasnt modified.....

you really need to learn to read bcos i have just repeated everything that was on this thread...... and no, i was not pottering around in ******* 6th.... **** sake...tit

lol Im trying to avoid doing any overtime atm! The works always there for atleast 17-20hours overtime a week... its just nice to relax tho and not do much!

I do read posts and from a standing start the should be even more distance between you and a clio due to 4WD. Boost doesnt mean **** all but power does and you still get the most power out of an S3 at 6000rpm.

And whats with the abuse. Just because you cant drive doesn't make me a tit. I won't lower myself to your level.
 
do you know how patronising assuming that icant drive is? thats what i was annoyed at...and if you had read the posts previous then you would realise that one the race was in the dry so 4x4 probably hindered me more than helped.....i had a boost leak which seemed to make a lot of differnece after i repaired it today..... boost doesnt mean anything? so take your turbo off the car as you wont be needing it you idiot..... and it wasnt from a standing start....who said it was? maybe you should learn to read

yup im green with rage........ my life has been shortened because of my hightend blood pressure.... etc etc

Anyways, ive been to argos this afternoon and booked half an hour in an MGF so should be able to sort my driving skills out...all thanks to an ultra observant individual....thankyou sincerely:respekt:

Hello all i'm pretty new to this site as i've only bought my S3 8L 2 weeks ago. The posts on here are very interesting and the bickering is quite funny to read on here to lol. As I have only been driving it for about a week (as there were a few problems with it had to send it back to garage to fix.) I've not got much experience with Audi, but coming from a Diesel Golf MK4 i'm constantly smiling. I love the car to bits im suprised so many people are not happy with them, but as I say im new to them so maybe il feel like that later. As people are comparing this version of the S3 to a new Clio and R32, i'm just curious how the new S3 would stand against a Clio or R32, it seems unfair to put old against new. One thing i have noticed which scares me a little is going round bends, and islands in the wet, if i put my foot down a little bit the back end slips or the front slides. But again that might be due to the fact i have some cheap tyres with a brand name i've never heard of lol. Anyway just wanted to say hi to everyone.
