    Hello everyone... (or anyone)

I live in South Africa and love Audis/VWs. Now recently got my hands on a A6 2.5TDI Quattro 6sp Man MY1998 , which is very kinda hard to find info on as it seems. I think its from Scotland and the manual had Audi Dundee all over it.

Anyways, bought the car with a faulty CCD which btw wasn't even in the car (had to collect it from the previous owner, which also didnt have the car long). I did bit of research on the CCD box he claims to came out of the car and i doubt it belongs to this car.
If anyone has anyway of checking it against my VIN, it would be appreciated! (PM me for details please)

Secondly. I love this site with all the info and challenges you guys (and girls) do. Iam busy fiddling with the Engine as there is also a problem (not revving pass 3500rpm in gear, 4000rpm neutral) First problem i faced was LOADS of smoke during stops in traffic. People started backing up as soon as i stopped (hiding of embarrassment in my own cloud of smoke). Found this site with wonderful info, just to find out about a blocked oil mist separator I just removed the oil cap seal as a quick fix atm, still must replace it. No smoking what so ever!!! Wow what a pleasure to see cars next to me at the lights again :)

Another problem i faced when parked on a slope nose up, it refuses to start. Also read about it here that it is air/fuel returning to the tank and needs to be bled to start. Found leaking fuel return pipes on the injectors. Hopefully that fixes it, still to check :p Next is the thermostat as is seems the car is not warming up fast enough... Will update as i go along. Btw i have vag, no codes.

I know alot of this problems has been disgusted in previous posts, i do loads of reading way in the early mornings to get remedies for problems. I just want to say to everyone it is very much appreciated!

If you have the funds when doing the thermostat change the water pump and if no recent change belts, pulleys and tensioners.
The front of the car has to come off anyway.
CCD? CD player or something else?

I found invoices in the car from our local Audi Center. I have no idea what it all means by here it is:

INJECTION PUMP R&I (perhaps removed and install?)
    INJECTORS R&I ALL 6
TOOTHBELT R&I TO RESET PUMP AND CAM TIMING THAT WAS OUT OF SYNC
    FUEL GAUGE SENDER REMOVED+REINSTALLED
    OCLP00MH10 CLAMP 12-20 X 2
    V 046 130 219A SEAL
    V 059 133 843A FILTERELEM
    V 059 919 501 TEMPSENDER
    V 443 121 107A HOSE
    V 4B0 906 087BC FUEL PUMP (very expensive)
    V 8E0 919 133B WASHER

Any idea what tempsender and fuel pump this is (g numbers and location)? Just trying to eliminate possible causes of problems.
The rest is small items like fuses, bulbs, bolts and o-rings. Then on another invoice have reconditioning of injectors and cam belt. I will have to see what is going on once i have the nose off. Will let you know...

Oh sorry, CCD/M (central comfortcontrol device or module???) well on the unit its Zentrale Komfortelektronik (which is a little closer to my language) :p
This unit controls the alarm, central locking, interior lights and windows. But is seems when they took the box out they bypassed it to let the windows work. As before, i doubt its even this cars unit as the models doesnt match up in years or something (car is MY 1998 and on the CCM is 2004. But all the plugs are fitting :p not sure about the keys modules.

Thank you for the warm welcome. Ill take some pictures tomorrow. Happy new years to everyone!:rockwoot:

Sweet! thank you TYphoon GB. Atleast i know thats done then... :kissmyrings: Is that pump the one the one which fills the reservoir and not prime pump (pushes fuel to the IP)? Sorry for the stupid questions... long night.:puke2:

The CCM which i got shows different numbers though 8E0 959 433 BC so this one is way off base i guess, but i did see this Module 8E0 959 433 | Ranno Randmaa which has me believed that this CCM is the wrong one for my car unless they swapped the fobs in the keys with it...:search:not sure how to check which fobs i have :( . Oh well, ill get it sorted one day eventually. Thanks again and happy new 2013! gona take some pictures after the nice rain we are having in this hot summer :salute:

Yup. Just lifts fuel over the tank baffle and up to the filter.
After that the IP takes over and sucks....yup the VP44 Pump sucks big time.
Any fuel line restrictions or air leaks or bubbles will wreak havoc. Some new proper fuel rated hoses to from the pump/filter suggested.
I understand its possible to code keys to any immobiliser. Not sure if that will then work 'other things'.
The dash and the VP44 are coded to each other with the manufacturers PIN.
The CCM (CCD) should work without any extra coding (IMHO) just need the right one for the car.
Ask local Audi dealer for a quote for the correct one, note the part number saying you will be back and search for one. Buy some other **** like trim clips so they dont feel used.
A good automotive locksmith (the type that recodes German car keys) should have the tools to check out the functions.
It interesting that they found the timing out as unless the belt stretches or the bearings are going west then the timing is pretty rigid. I wonder why they removed the VP44?
If you have no fault codes thats good as when the VP44 goes it generates codes all over in my single recent experience (and a lot of web searches).
If you have Vag Com you could check the timing is still good.
Try an fuel additive cleaner and perhaps an octane booster or higher rated fuel to clean the system ...might help.
Pick up a copy of Elsa Win from ebay cheaper than a paper manual.

Thanks for the reply. You do explain alot and i love learning about these cars. I tried checking timing with TDI graph in Vag, but when engine reaches temp (85'C) it says ''Fuel is too hot'' at the bottom Is it due to the fact that iam idling the engine to temp? Takes about 30 min too reach 85'C, is this normal, or should i rather drive the car to temp and then check. Numbers ive seen bottom left was somewhere like 158'F/'C and 54-58 fluctuating. Is there any other way to check timing in the scope or basic setting??? And what values am i looking at for AFB to much??? Sorry for asking, iam sure it much be somewhere on this forum but have to go to family dinner. Must have started another thread maybe. And yes, i still love my mommy... RIP dad :salute:

R & I could also be "remove and inspect" rather than install. I'd assume those parts with R&I haven't been replaced.

Does your temp gauge hold at 90C?
If not thermostat is defo on the shopping list.

Hot fuel warning should not stop a reading...bit worrying?

Manual method is Block 04 Field 2, 3 and 4

Check basic settings display group 004:
Check display in display zone 4: Specification 100%
Observe display in display zone 2: specification "retarded"
    * Check display in display zone 3: specification 2° ATDC +/- 2°

    Mine shows as

    835 RPM Late 2.8 ATDC 100%

That could be! Never thought of it :p yah i guessed that its NOT been replaced, be know the injectors has been recon'ed at least :D, pump might be due but cant think of Audi putting faulty part back on a car??? Guess i'll never know, but could give them a call and maybe, just maybe, give me some history hopefully... The car pulls very nice till it hits close to 3000 rpm, then nothing, have to change gear due to not going over 3k rpm... very strange??? tried running it without MAF (unplugged) not much difference.

OK, what if done so far:
Turbo - VNT clogged up, stripped turbo completely and cleaned (oh turbo has been recon'ed aswell)
Intake - Removed soot, was about 3mm thick
Oil mist- not yet, just remove oil fill cap seal, time being

Now iam stuck in gear in my mind that it might be timing, camshafts wear or turbo. But it pulls really well till 3000 rpm, can cams worn still manage to pull at low rpm?

Thanks for reply on the ''inspect''

Thank you buddy. This will help alot! think ill check it now while it is still warm. Yes, the engine temp does go to 90'C and sticks there, but takes about 5km or so in traffic and 10km highway/freeway :p Will check timing quick and reply! Be right back :)

So if I change the fuel filter, I must operate the fuel pump to prime the system, right? How do I operate that pump?

@Icy, if the temperature sticks to 90 degrees, then it's not a faulty thermostat. My engine(2.5 afb) also warms up in 5km in urban driving, or 10km on highway.

Its apparently due to the odd shape of the tank that the pump is installed, it just picks up diesel in all four corners and fills a reservoir baffle inside the tank. I just filled the filter in front with diesel and purged the injectors and all is well, although i heard its much faster/easier to tow start it not to run the battery flat and save some starter life. Anyone to comment on that is welcome.

i must say the engine sounds smooth when its Late and little bit noiser on Early

Oh the TDI graph is weird, or just me, but when i log the graph and pick any of the V6 engines including AFB it shows blue and red lines horizontal appose to diagonal. No green nor yellow, but shows in the 4cyl graphs. Confused... :p

The timing on V6's are different than on inline 4 tdi's. Here's my timing and what I think it should look like.

Sweet, some nice info, but it seems that i have TDI ver 1.3d and i cant see green and yellow and it says something about not warm enough... :p ill have a decent look tomorrow after work. And maybe get ver 1.4c? Was hoping that basic setting group 4 figures could be an indication of timing seeing my TDI graph is not working :p Nice graph btw! Iam not sure how well these car go, its difficult to check on YouTube as i normally don't believe all the cars are stock... any video on there that can be believed how good these cars go?

The stock 2.5 afb engine has a 0-100km of 9.6 seconds. Check on the video how fast is doing that. If it's faster, it's not stock. If it's slower, maybe it's the driver. Or a faulty engine :)

Audi A6 Avant - Refurb & Repair (Pic heavy) - Page 24 - Detailing World

Post 238 for my take on pump priming....

As to the timing... its all driven by the VP44 pump.

Did I read right that the results were with no pedal pressure (tick over?)

Does sound like the stat is good but something needs a second opinion....

They pull like a train when running well despite the weight and will shame lesser vehicles...

First off, i have to salute you in the dedication and hard work you've put into your audi! :salute: Just wow, its amazing! When can i send mine? just kidding :p

I know timing in dynamically set by the pump, but it can only do so much if the physical timing is way out, right??? As for my stats, yes it was at tick over (idling???) Sorry, dont know the code/slang for idling, we here call it purring (like a cat ;) ) it does seem a bit out by 2 degrees if its at 4 degrees whereas your is at -+2 degrees. Does this seem confusing?

Ha! Actually I'd like to do another one day!

I was led to believe that anything over 3 is worth correcting. Its such a finger fiddling job whilst I was close I still gave it to my local VAG specialist garage to do the fine tuning. Gave them a chance to do a 'health check' which confirmed all my other work was good.

I'd like to keep my audi's as original as possible and keep them in tip top shape. Wish i documented the A4 B5 1.8 MY1995... Done a complete restoration from front to back, resprayed, engine, interior and still looks like new! But this A6 i got doesn't look bad, no need to do anything on the interior side, body looks good, only the rims needs some tlc, shocks is on the list and this CCM which is missing is driving me crazy, i hate it when something is missing out of a car :p
