New clutch...flywheel too??

    hi all have just been told that i need a new clutch on my s3, was just wondering what people think about changing the flywheel too and how much should i be expecting to pay from peoples experience?

    You won't need a new flywheel if yours is not damaged...

    A lightwheight flywell should give the engine a sense of free revving and ore instant response to throtle in the lower rev range... Let's wait for more "hands on" posts, I am only guessing..

    OK, rough costs as follows:
    New clutch approx £150 GSF
    New uprated clutch approx £500 +
    New dual mass flywheel approx £270 GSF / £450 Audi
    Fitting - anywhere between 5 and 8 hours, depending upon garage and whether they drop the rear drivetrain or not.

    Single mass flywheel & clutch kit start around the £800 mark. SPEC from the USA are being marketed by a couple of companies as the exchange rate makes them relatively cheap. Again, similar amounts of labour.

    Also worth replacing the clutch master cylinder at the same time whilst everything is in bits, and you will also need to pay for a 4 wheel alignment once it is put back together as the front subframe will have been dropped (and the rear might have been as well depending who fits the clutch).

    I started a similar post a few days to which no-one replied. Basically I have an uprated clutch and a worn flywheel. I've had conflicting advice from two well respected VAG specialists - one garage said just replace the flywheel with another dual mass; the other said replace the whole thing with a single mass flywheel and a new clutch.

    thanks for that jason. ive been told by a garage that as my s3 has only done 70,000 miles i could get away with just the clutch. its mainly the labour thats going to cost me i think.

    My S3 had only done 69k when i had to have the clutch replaced, once they had the car apart the found the flywheel made a knocking noise when it rotated so i was advised to replace it.

    From there it all went downhill and my car cost me basically a small fortune to get sorted you can from my thread here:

    If you can afford to replace the flywheel do so cos if you get the clutch done and not the flywheel and then the flywheel does go you will have to shell out for the labour twice which is the expensive bit!

    yup but its behind me now and with the custom code remap i have now had the car goes great!!

    Still these things happen sometimes your lucky and other times your not this was one of those occasions.

    Fingers crossed it all goes sweet for you but i just wanted to say be warned these cars can be right little buggers when they wanna be.

    Awesome always seem to advise the single mass flywheel route... JBS did mine with a standard dual mass flywheel and a Kevlar based clutch rated at 400lbs which is still going strong with REVO...

    Thanks Stewart. JBS recommended staying with the dual mass and it was The Phirm who were pushing the single mass route. As I said, both are highly respected but I was a bit surprised that they were giving such differing advise.

    I think I'll just replace the flywheel with another dual mass. That's the cheaper option I know but it also seems to make the most sense to me as well. There is no point in fitting a massively uprated clutch if I've no plans for any more power.

    I think ultimately there is a limit to what the dual mass setup can take, there ARE advantages and disadvantages to the single mass route.
    Mainshaft harmonics (rattle at idle) is one of the obvious disadvantages.

    There is an interesting thread on Seatcupra.net by Omega1 about why VAG used the dual mass setup in the later models.

    With single mass, there are a lot more products available as the applications have been around for over 20 years, it's basically a G60 flywheel and VR6 clutch kit in terms of dimensions. I dont understand why these single mass setups are so expensive given the above information.
    I'm firmly convinced it's 'bullshit baffles brains' and that many companies are marketing and rebranding these as 'new specialists kits' when in fact they are just newer versions of legacy products.
