I was wondering if you placed an order would it be factory made or is there stock sat there waiting to be sold?

Depends entirely on your spec. The dealers order the cars, so there's no 'stock' as such other than what the dealer ordered (or can get from another dealer), but the specs and options vary so wildly with Audi that there's no point in keeping stock really.

What are you looking for? Do you want to build to order brand new? I'm sure Audi will be more than happy to cater what you need. They will obviously check what cars are in their 'stock' allocation. If you just say your in no rush they can just build one to order. They might just want to provide you a service and deliver a car in a timely mannor.

I'm sure others can answer about 'stock' better than me, as for tap vehicle which has all the toppings you want and has to be custom Made it seems to be a 5-7 months wait (dealer delivery slot dependent).

As long as you're not set on a particular colour then there are lots of stock options available. Just walk into your local dealership and they'll have a list of what's available throughout the UK.

Ah right ok. So if I just went to a dealer would they have to tell me if the car I want to order is stock or factory then?

Is there anyway of telling when the car was built? i.e. If it had just been built or had it been built 4 months ago and sat at a dealer?

Well if its stock your just going to get it quick.
If they can't supply stock, your going to get an estimated build date, a confirmed build date, its built and on its way, then an agreed delivery date......And it will take 3-4 months to get the car......
I'd say little chance of getting a stock car, but if you want a car built for you, order some extras then they have to custom build.

Did you go to a dealer??

No I just looked on orange wheels but I was also phoning around some dealers. Some have me a build week of 3 to 4 and I thought that must be stock right?

Not quite 'stock', but likely those are cars that are already in the build queue. Some dealers will modify existing orders at the last minute with the factory to suit your requirements and this can sometimes mean you get the car much earlier.

Would the dealer add privacy glass themselves if they find a stock car?

Unlikely.. but they will find a 'fake tan' person to apply something that looks OK for a while.

How are people enjoying their new cars? Are they everything you thought they would be?

There's lots of opportunity to pick a car from stock, I did just that. There's obviously some citeria that you will have but I didnt really want to wait until April for a car.
I got all the options I wanted, including the colour and some options that I wasnt bothered about were fitted and I got them at a knock down price, the technology pack for instance was two hundred pounds!

I would certainly suggest that any one looking for an A3 gets their dealer to review what's available.

There are generally batch number ID codes in factory glass I believe. Aftermarket tints will often scratch off.

If you scratch it! We have after market and they are near perfect, never had any issues.

The way to tell is looking round the edges, you will see the white dots round they outer edges (on the rear side glass)

True, you would need to have it replaced. We have kids and stuff in and out of the boot and have never had any issues.
We had to go down the after market route because our A4 was a stock car without. Interestingly I haven't added it to the S3, because I wasn't sure on the look, still undecided and may have to go down the after market route again if I do want them!

We have an 8P Black Edition currently. Privacy was part of the pack . I was rather dubious about the effect but having lived with it and travelled widely in the heat in Europe it has now become a must have at £263.50 net!

Is there no way it can be done after the car has been built? So if audi had it put on would I be able to tell?

The guy who did my A4, does for local Audi and BMW dealers.

I think when it's done from factory the tint is applied when the glass is formed, after market is only film. To get OEM look you would need to replace all the glass in each window!

If you don't have the option to get factory tints, the after market are ok if looked after. Most people would never know!

If you get after market tints done professionally with a lifetime warranty then won't have any issues and not readily noticeable that they're not oem

Mine have a lifetime guarantee so can get them replaced. However had them a few months and are fine. Will get a car with privacy glass if new but a good compromise if you buy second hand

I have been chatting to a dealer about ordering my car as I really want it to be made at the factory as per my spec I'm planning (1.4 COD - sport with privacy glass, comfort pack). The salesman said it
Would be factory made and would arrive around march/April.
As I really want a car made for me from
Factory how can I be 110% sure it is and not just stock that they have already got or a car with similar spec and they just add privacy glass for example??
I know some people will think I'm sad but as it's my first audi I just want it factory made and I can never trust any sales man so I wondered how I can know for sure??!
    Please help

As I said way up the thread -
If its stock your just going to get it quick.
If they can't supply stock, your going to get an estimated build date, a confirmed build date, its built and on its way, then an agreed delivery date......And it will take 3-4 months to get the car......

He's quoting 3-4 months its factory.

That's right - do you not think the salesman would want to get you in it as quickly as he could?

Audi are just different to ford, Vauxhall etc - generally cars are built for customers / dealers and they don't just pile airfields full of stock ready to sell to whoever.

So you are seriously suggesting a dealer is going to keep a car in a pound for three months while he sends you e-mails providing an estimated build date, confirmed build date, build complete then arranges a delivery date with you?

If they can assure you, then they must have a way of knowing, so surely they can show you that way? I'm sure if the order was as stake they'd change their minds about showing you

I was sent a copy of the Audi system order via email showing the order number, build slot, build week and all the options, plus delivery port etc.
Not entirely sure of your concern, but I guess that should put your mind at ease.

Similar story with me, except I went in to the dealer and picked up a hard copy. To be honest I'd advise anyone to do this; makes sure the car is ordered promptly and reduces the chance of the specification being wrong.

I'm with others here, think the dealer would be mad to keep a stock car sat waiting just to kid you that it was a factory order.

I can't see why they can't show you something as proof, I've had Fords in the past and the sales guy at our local dealer used to say 'come and sit round here and lets have a look at what stock and spec is coming in at other dealers' no issues showing the ordering system etc.

As has been pointed out already, you would have to be very lucky to find a car with the right spec and in stock somewhere, then on top of that it costs a dealer to have a car sat around, they like to shift them.

Yep, I also got my dealer to email me a copy of the page from the Audi main order system which confirmed my spec etc.

Sounds like you need to change your dealer...
