I'm about 500 miles in to the 'bedding-in' stage and I'm starting to feel like it's lost some of the 'spirit' it had when I first got it. I'm currently putting this down to two possibilities:

    1. At about 350 miles in, I decided to let the horses run free at some traffic lights. Going pretty hard through the gears, I heard what sounded like a 'thump' on the centre of the firewall, then it seemed to go a bit sluggish. Since then, the engine seems to be a little noisier and there seems to be a very slight metallic noise coming from around the front passenger footwell that I hadn't noticed before. I've assumed I haven't broken anything serious because I've no lights on the dash. Could a hose have popped off under the pressure of hard acceleration?

    2. Having come from a 1.4 Honda Civic, when I first drove the A3, it felt like I had a nuclear power station under my right foot. Is it possible that I'm getting used to the power now and it's just starting to 'feel' slow?

It's due for it 1000 mile / 6 weeks checkup soon, which is a comfort, but I'm hoping to god something won't show up to the techs that I 'ragged' it one time during the bedding-in stage.

new engines like yours are built not needed the first 1000 miles break-in. obviously it is advisable but the engine will be fine if you floored it straight away.

you will be getting used to the speed, and the engines are noisy things, when you start listening to it, you will pick up on the 'weird' sounds it produces.

couldn't explain what the knock was. do you think you have never heard this noise because you have never booted it before?

@ 10blazin: Yeah, that's what go me so confused. I've had a nosey round the engine bay and can't see anything wrong (from the top). I'm getting about 50mpg (according to the car) to and from work so I'm thinking nothing major has happened.
Guess I'll have to wait until check-up day as the dealer is a good 40mins away from home and I just don't get the time these days to pop over there on a whim.

@gixxer600k4: Well, the sales guy said to me, "just drive it normally" when I asked, so I've been driving a bit careful really. Previous to that (and since) I've not given it any serious 'bootage', just a bit of low rev. grunt occasionally. The noise it made felt just like someone had stamped their foot down on the floor pan, but seemingly from the middle of the firewall.

just inform audi as soon as possible, it could be the clutch engaging whilst under pressure and possibly the plates have not worn in much

I would definitely get it checked over mate as it shouldn't be making weird noises and I wouldn't have thought you would have got used to the power so quickly.

So how come you get a check after 1000mls/6 months. Didn't get anything for mine LOL. They threw the keys at me and said see you in 18 months
