    Hi All

On Monday night I bought my first Audi - Silver 98R A3 1.8t (150) AGU(?). Full service history, fresh MOT with no adviseries and 115k on the clock. My first impressions of the car are good, everything seems to work electronic wise and it's pretty fun to drive (first turbo :yahoo:). I'm booked in with Audi Technik in Gloucester for a health check and from there I'm looking to make it faster! I'd just like to list a few potential problems and then what I'm planning to do in the short-term. Any advice and experience would be very helpful. I'm looking to teach myself how to do some of it too but my experience currently amounts to changing a ka rear bulb and fitting an induction kit to a Fiesta :p

    Problems..?
    • Faulty Water Temperature Gauge - Barely seems to go up but if I turn car off and on again (as I did at petrol station) it reads correctly at 90. - New thermostat I assume?
    • Noticed some rust above bottom door trim, I've read about this problem and guess I'll have to get garage to sort.
    • A turbo flutter sound when I lift off, say in 2nd just after putting my foot down. As the DV is recirculation I expect this shouldn't happen and prob need a new one. Uprated like Forge 007P worth it etc?
    • When the revs are around 6k (not pin pointed yet) I can't change gear, the stick comes out of say 2nd but won't go into another gear whatsoever! Little concerned about this but otherwise the clutch and transmission seem fine.
    Next 3 Months
    • Health Check
    • Fit new dipped headlight as it went last night! Warning light and sound work well though.
    • Some tools, so far looking at Halfraud Professional range
    • New DV
    • New TIP
    • Uprate Pads
    • Remap
    • Possible Solid Flywheel conversion if there is a prob with the clutch (Specilist or local garage ok to do this?)
    • Take rear seats out.
    • TT/S3 alloys or lightweight like TD Pro Race alloys.
    • Possibly 2x Sparco R100's as originals feel marginal on padding.
Obviously I'll make sure the car is in good order before 'boosting' power and whether I get any of that done in the next 3 months is purely down to money and available time but hopefully it's a good place to start. The car is a weekend play thing and eventually I'd like to track it.

    Thanks for reading :salute:

The Halfords professional tools are spot on had my sockets probably 8 years of home use never had a problem!

Temp gauge could be the Coolant temp sensor a 5 minute job or the thermostat which is fairly straightforward if a little awkward. Guides for both on here.

Best off sticking with the standard replacement DV unless you like shiny bits save the cash for something else.

They do seem good, especially with the lifelong guarantee on them. I'll just have to learn how to use them!

That's good to know, I'm hoping it'll come up in the healthcheck and that it'll be an item they have.

I read on a helpful sticky that the standard DV should be good enough for near standard cars, and that a more reliable item was put on the later cars but not sure on this. Hmm decisions..

    Thanks for the help

Hi there Nath and welcome to the site.

Sounds like you have a solid plan for the next 3 months list.

I can't believe you're from Gloucester though and not using Bill @ badger 5 dude- that's my advice to you if you want health checks and also want to learn something as he pretty much carries out all the work in front of you and he is an extremely knowledgeable chap specifically for the 1.8t lump. Plus it's the sort of garage where if any issues are found- they'll always be some sort of work around to the issue :)

    Hi kwistoff,

I've seen Bill and Badger 5 recommended a lot on here (really new to forum and area) but never realised it was only down the road!!! I feel pretty bad now :sob: but they'll definitely be getting some business now!

The ADI looks like something to aim for too, sounds great!

    Cheers

You are so fortunate to live just down the road to B5s buddy - us folk in the SE have to travel miles for decent VAG specialist garages!

Nice to see you've already found the stickies dude- so much information in there that's worth reading for newbies :)

I used to live in the SE, sheer luck I ended up near some reputable places.

I'm trying to learn as much as possible! I've succeeded in changing a bulb, baby steps and all that.
