    Hi there,

I am in the process of purchasing a new A3 Sportsback and queried with my dealer whether it would be possible to choose my vehicle registration number from a list available near to the point of handover. I previously did thus with my current vehicle from the same dealer. They have said that because of DVLA changes introduced in July 2013, their number plates are now automatically assigned. Has anyone else experienced this? I thought that it was just the tax discs that were dealt with electronically.

    Cheers

Sounds like rubbish, I chose mine in late August 2013. Sounds like they were trying to fob you off to be honest.

Have you ruled out a PP? I picked up a 14 plate reg back in December when they were released. There are lots of xx14 DZY (as an example) ones available for £399 if the idea appeals and funds permit.

Not true. You now need a vin to assign a number to, that's the only change I believe!

I wouldn't have a PP if you paid me £10k.

Not my choice but I believe many caravaners an White van people love them!

I agree with you unless the plates are genuinely good ones.

If you can afford thousands for a genuinely decent personalised plate then that's cool but otherwise just don't bother. Trying to make something contrived out of a cheap plate from the DVLA just makes you look sad IMHO :p

(The ultimate losers are the ones who have their name in small letters at the bottom of the plate to help you work out what they were desperately trying to spell out)

Although I work for audi I was allowed to choose mine from a list of around 15 different reg's. It just prevents you from getting one like an A1 that went out to a customer the other day with TYT at the end! Lol

Thanks for the replies. My dealer is the Sytner Group. Not sure if this is a policy specific to them, or whether they are fobbing me off.

I had the opposite from my dealers (colbournes). I was informed when I queried if I could choose my plate, that I wasn't able to anymore due to recent rule changes. He didn't elaborate as to whether this was a dealer group policy or a gov agency one.

I was able to choose mine only last month, so it is still generally possible. Had to be done the moment the car arrived in the UK and I was given a list of approx 25 numbers to choose from, which was a fun little exercise that gave me more of a feeling of ownership than just being assigned one. I did manage to find one that formed a vaguely meaningful word, but since my batch of plates began with LL everyone now assumes I am Welsh!

Sounds like it's a combination of timing and whether or not your dealer can be arsed with it then.

I'd be rather concerned about the quality of dealer service if they can't be arsed but then lie about it.

My dealer let me choose my plate and that was only 10 days ago. There was a list of them to choose from....I just took the first as my PP will be going on at some point anyway. It isn't actually a bad reg mind but having the PP will annoy Pilot :p ha ha

Yeh, pretty much the same for me. The last 3 letters on mine are my initials backwards, just coincidence that it was in there. Mine had to be done over the phone as well, he wouldn't email about it, and he called me as soon as the car was in the country, so maybe they aren't supposed to now but there are ways around it.

I didn't have a choice of plate, although I didn't ask - to be fair.

That said, either by sheer luck or thoughtfulness by the salesperson, the last three letters spelled my initials!

Dealer was Parklands, Gloucester, (great service btw).

My car never gets given a new registration number until I sell it. Because I have a personal plate and I always put in on Retention and I give the dealer the Retention Certificate and they register it with my number. Only when I put my number of retention again when I come to sell it does it get issue with a normal number related to is age.

Each to his own!! Whenever I purchase my next A3 I already know my number, it will be H5 DJR and my wife's next car will be H5 JHR. I don't need a nice new 14 plate to show that I've got a nice new car :)

May this have been affected by the recent closures of regional offices?

3 years ago, when I picked up the A4, the dealer had chosen one of the plates available to them for me as it had my initials in it.

Nice touch and superb customer service.

TFSI....I think I may have picked FKU because even as I read that the gaps between the letters are filled. Not to be rude of course but because I'd never ever forget the reg. I've a bit of a wait yet but I'll talk to my sales woman nearer the build date. She's been great so far and hopefully I'll get a choice

One of the best and cheapest ways to 'personalise' your car from all the other similar cars on the road. You choose everything else on the car you order so why not one of the most noticeable items on the car. It is the one thing that most people and organisations will use to describe your car.

The wait for a 14 plate is purely financial. Car arrives mid February wait until 1 March will result in several hundred pound saving in 2017.

I dislike PPs because so many of the people ( no t necessarily on here) are absolute ar53 OLE s

So it's the drivers of cars with PP that you dislike so much rather than the PPs themselves!!!

Even Audi AG themselves use private plates IN A3*** or IN S3***

I understand the waiting to March for a 14 plate for the financial reasons as I would do the same even though my car will not have a date related plate until I decide to sell it. It still makes the same price difference because of when it was first registered.

That's my most local dealer and I have always found them to be an absolute shower.

Hate them with a passion. Full of young sales wannabes in slim fit narrow lapel suits and skinny ties.

I rang and asked them about a drive in a demo s3. They said they didn't have a demo but a new s3 in the show room.

I went over 3 hrs later and there was a chap test driving the showroom s3 on trade plates. Morons

I must admit having visited quite a number of Audi dealers recently to try various A3s, some are very good and some are just useless. I use a silly rule of thumb with car sales 'men' in particular and it always seems to be true. I look at their shoes. If they are clean and polished they are generally OK, but if they have not very clean and un-polished shoes they are usually useless. Seems to work every time!

I'm not keen on Nottingham Audi had a problem few years ago when they were at basford crossings so I bought mine from Sheffield Audi, even though I live 3 miles from Nottingham dealership. My dad also had problems with them and he bought his last 5 Audi's from Lincoln Audi.

Another thread ruined by a bizarre hatred for numbers and letters.

OP, ignore the nutter ranting about private plates, some real issues there, you should get a choice of reg plates.
