Ok, I can see how this could be correct or incorrect; depending on your driving style/tyres/roads where you live/etc etc.

    But..........

This mentality that you shouldn't order/buy an Audi unless it has Quattro is bordering on the ridiculous. Quattro is good, but there's more to an Audi than just that.
And if you think otherwise then it's probably you who shouldn't have bought one.

Are people that bad at driving that they need Quattro to help them out? Not being able to pull out of a junction quickly without Quattro? Seriously....?!

I had 3 years in a 2.0 TDI 170 FWD with no problems. The last year spent with it remapped too, never wanted for Quattro apart from when the snow was here just to help with getting up my drive. If you provoked it in to wheelspinning by just slamming the throttle down mindlessly of course it would but if you control the throttle its not a problem.

We have a loaner FWD until new Quattro replacement comes. It is absolute **** in comparison. Quattro means that you can pull away in most conditions without drama. Quattro is safer and more secure feeling.

Of course you don't need Quattro but for me an Audi is not a proper Audi without it! Once you've had it everything else is second best!!

Rubbish, the guy is short of money. There is very little point in buying an Audi if you buy the Golf version and you are hard up. sure if money is not a problem then buy the Audi but then you might as well by quattro so you get something more than a golf for your money.

Does that mean your new A3 won't be a proper Audi then seen as though strictly speaking the A3 doesn't use what is classed as "proper" Quattro...

The new A3 is my wife's car/family car and is an Audi with what Audi call Quattro... your post may be intending to be 'picky' but the Haldex whatever system whilst front biased works Ok in context. Our other Audi does have proper Quattro which is preferable in my opinion but the A3 Quattro system works a treat as far as we are concerned.:tapedshut:

Sorry but that is rubbish, and then some.
Buying a FWD A3 does not equate to buying a Golf.
The look, "prestige" and comfort are only a few of the things that seperate the two.

    On a side note........

Have you ever taken your fingers out of your a*se long enough to realise that you are slagging off the car of a large proportion of people on here??

Preferences are fine, but calling FWD Audi's "absolute ****" and "not a proper Audi" is only going to rub people up the wrong way, because essentially you are just slagging off their (my) pride and joy.

My advice (for what its worth)....... pull your head in a bit by trying not to be so offensive with your opinions (and yeah I realise they are only your "opinions" so no need to point that out AGAIN!).

:lmfao: Man, you are fast becoming the person I find most irritating on here. Dazmo won't be happy.

Oh come on !! what seperates the Audi from the Golf is a 7 year old chassis, touch screen sat nav, DAB radio, modern interior and a few £000 !

Look i understand that you don't have Quattro so you stick up for non Quattro. I don't have an S3 so i stick up for my 3.2, thats human nature as long as we are happy then sod the rest of them but its not about us, its about a guy selling a Quattro R32 for a fwd A3. He wanted advice and my advice is....if you don't want Quattro and money is short then you can buy a better spec'd golf for less money. Its not an attack on your car.

Note that I've never seen what you have written as an "attack" on my car.

It's when other posters (mentioning no names ) decide to call it **** and a fake audi, that I get a bit defensive.

And as usual, we all moved away from the OP's question and started talking about whether or not Audi has made the biggest motoring f*ck up known to man by making cars that are anything other than a TDI Quattro.

Guys I don't want a huge debate over the quattro.

I'm very much in to my cars and understand the 4wd haldex/quattro system, it is good but not essential and I'll stick by that and can speak from experience having pretty much the same system on my golf.

I'm happy with my choice and won't be changing the spec for a quattro I could afford it if I wanted and felt it nessecary but I don't. If it was bad as people are making out then I'm sure Audi would of rectified the problem. People maybe need to look at there driving in there unable to pull away safely in a fwd

Calm down folks.... this isn't real life... This forum seems to be a great place to air what are very personal opinions. Those of us that have Quattro in various guises love it, those who have had it rarely will want FWD after experiencing its benefits. I think that is a fact. Not heard anyone put forward a contrary view. Many of us have IPod docks, Sat Nav, Electric windows, DAB etc in our cars , once experienced people rarely want to go back. Quattro is the same. Audi made it's name 30+ years ago with Quattro and many of us sad old gits have had it for years now.

I agree with Paddy if money is short a VW Golf may be a better option than an Audi A3 but then again if you look at the reviews it is suggested that the A3 is actually cheaper over 3 years due to better residual value. We have a 57 Golf Match in the family, it is superb, not a rocket and not a great handler on 15in alloys and 105bhp is hardly a quick motor. Quattro would be way over the top on smaller 'gutless' cars but once you start talking 150bhp 300nm torque + Quattro takes the driving experience up a level. Saab at one point (Turbo FWD pioneers) said they would never put more than 185/200 BHP through the front wheels only. Then they did with a 2.3T Aero (9 5) What an awful handling car that was!! (IN MY OPINION!)

OK well don't ask for advice if its going to rattle you then. I will ring Audi in the morning and tell them to scrap Quattro, its just peoples bad driving they should be looking at.

The dozens of threads here extolling the virtues of Quattro over front wheel drive Cup Megan's, BMW 1 series and even the new sirocco are just bad drivers making excuses. I will remove my prop shaft tomorrow and join the fwd advanced drivers here :). As i sit, stuck on the hill up the North downs next week in the snow watching those with Quattro sail buy i will shout out to them " cant handle fwd drive then ya sissys"...As i pull away from Work and the torque steer snatches the wheel out of my hand i will think of you and wonder if you could give me lessons on how to pull away saftly......In fact tonight i will tear out the DSG as well ! who needs these driver aids....and electric windows !! just people who cant work a winder properly...tonight i will build a fire and burn the "devils car" and that way i will be forced to drive properly.

lol! But to be fair, m4rky does have a good point. Driving aids are fine as they make your drive more pleasurable. But all this nonesense about FWD being undrivable is silly.

I wonder what the significance of the 1985 is in M4rky1985 is ?
I had a Opel Manta GTE in 1985 :)...in 1975 i had a MGB-GT. :) Both rear wheel drive. Before that i had a Ford Corsair.....rear wheel drive again. My Cavalier and VR6 were front wheel drive. My ducati,s 5 of them, my Yamaha R1, My Laverda Jota, Suzuki 750, Honda 750 and my GSXR 1000 were all rear wheel drive.....naturally....... I raced the ducati in 2 seasons of BMRC and dabbled with a racing Koenig outfit.....Oh and i had a Ferrari GT4 for a short time which i raced but it was a nightmare and very shot lived...at the age of 15 i was competing in motorcycle trials with a greaves scotish 6 day event bike and now i need lessons on how to pull away. hmmmmmmm maybe you are right..

Well if you (as you posted) have such problems pulling out of a road in a FWD drive then maybe you do.

Still stuck with the 170 bhp diesel, seems a good compromise with performance and economy. Much more pleased with the better spec car and no going back with this one.

Only thing it's got which I don't want is a telephone cradle/prep in the arm rest. May have to look at removing it.

On another note would the wiring and actual fitment be the same between the old and new style rear lights.

I think the new version look mint but mines not got them on. Found a pair of new ones on eBay for the sport back if they'll fit and it's a standard iso block connector between the two.
