I used to have a grey phase 2 16v 1.8 a couple of years ago, my pal had a red 1 at the same time. they are serious fun, but we both had lists of problems. mine blew up 2 days after I brought it ( the bottom end had a 12" crack in it) so I fitted a new engine I found for a £100, the engine was sweet so I replaced a lot of parts to make it run as good as it could. next the windows stopped working, then the sunroof, then the immobiliser broke because the sunroof leaked, the electric mirrors stopped it was endless. great to drive, but I couldn't own another haha

Brilliant thread!

God, I miss my red 1.8 16v.

It was an awesome little car, but like most other French hot hatches it was a buggar to keep on the road, Every time I took it to the garage it'd cost me £500 to £1000 to get it back on the road. I'd probably still have her as (an expensive) project but one cold day in December a 7.5 tonner decided to squish me into the cental reservation barriers on a dual carriageway and Kylie the Clio was no more. RIP Kylie :-(

Good on yer for keeping a Williams going!

Awesome thread mate. Double kudos for taking photos, they'll serve you well in many years whether you keep it or not. You can tell I wish I'd kept photos of my mk2 Escort that was rebuilt from the ground up. Stupidly gave them all the new owner as proof.

fantastic mate. I had a hybrid years ago. rebuilt a megane engine to go into it Great Little car apart from the rust and this was like 10 years ago I recon. I remember changing the alt, brings back memories what a pig of a job as was getting to the oil filter. Had to take the rad out to change it once. I thank you for the trip down memory lane and I hope you cherish it for many years to come.

Shouldn't you have taken the final pics at an Elf garage?

Seriously though, Loving this project! I've wanted one of these when they first came out but could only afford an RSI.
Test drove one & it cornered like a go-kart!
Even at only a few years old, the rear arches were blistering! ****** tinfoil manufacturing!
They looked good with the quad headlight conversion, & you used to get an Ansa back box which sounded so sweet on them! A nice growl without sounding like a chav mobile.
What are you planning for it? Long term keeper?

That reminded me, I did my steering wheel parts with a carbon fibre wrap. Looked good as far as I remember.
Defo well worth hanging on the the 1 once it's restored. Pretty sure it will be a future classic!
