my new audi let me down after just 100 miles

    Hello all AUDI fans

    I just bought my self an 2000 AUDI A4 1.8T Sport

    everything was fine when i test drove the car at first... ran great made me happy
    paid it and drove it for couple hours in the city where i bought it from.... as i have a buddy there so we kicked it for a few hours enjoying my new ride
    the car was located in Hull... 150 miles from coventry where I live
    80 miles down the road it started acting up (sounded like a miss fire)
    I pulled over and popped the hood and surprise engine was running like a diesel engine would run (hydraylic lifters where going mad)
    first thing i thought was no oil going to the head as my oil light came on
    checked the oil it was full max so must be a bad oil pump or it was cloged up
    engine wasn't overheating....
    i thought id drive it down just a few more miles (BAD IDEA) to the nearest city but it died before i got into town
    so now it turns over but wont start
    got the car towed to the shop where i work (VRS)
    I am angry as hell now and not very happy with my purchase.
    I got the car from ebay so now Im screwed as no return accepted

    took the coils out... removed the spark plugs... first 3 where ok but number 4 was chewed in half :(
    we used a camera to get down to the cylinders and they are fuked... well 2 of them are (they look like they been beaten with a hammer) probly cylinder sleeves are scratched
    most likely some valves have dropped down in the cylinders
    will be taking it apart this week
    I am looking for a new engine now :(
    I really wanna sell it as is or part it out and get a new one as I dont have much time to play with it

    Bloody hell that's a bit of a horror story, feel for you. At least it sounds like you're pretty handy with the oily bits.... How on earth did it test drive OK with something like that so basically wrong?

    I dont know man I ran fine for a few hours and then all of a sudden engine was destroyed

    I found a new engine on ebay with 90K miles on it... complete with turbo for 275

    ill be swappin on the weekend at the shop atleast wont have to pay anyone to do it for me

    TBH the moral of the story is that when you get the big red flashing oil can and the engine starts rattling you STOP driving it immediately.

    By ignoring all the warning signs and continuing to drive it, you've gone from needing to fit a new oil pump and/or clearing out the sump, to having to replace the whole engine.

    I agree with what aragon said. Driving on after the warning light illuminates is only going to end one way.

    From stuff I've read I'm not sure if the low oil pressure warning is that reliable tbh. By time you get the warning, it may be too late anyway...
    Good luck with it and make sure you give the replacement lump a good clean out before you fit it!

    ^+1... definately gut the new lump, as a minimum, clean out the sump, strainer/pickup, oil pump and flush. oh and put quality oil in, not cheap stuff, It stands a better chance of lasting and not sludging.

    Definitely use quality oil I'd suggest 5W40 or 5w30 fully synthetic and put a big arse oil filter on it !!

    068115561B for the oem VAG filter or HOF259 for an even larger one from Halfords.Oil change every 5k and you should be ok.

    I have this on mine it's about 4/4.5" wide and about 6" tall.

    Seams to be fine on 8k intervals !

    buying one of those filters now... any suggestions on a good full gasket ?

    I baught my head gasket set from All German Parts.

    What are you doing with the head gasket? Arent you just buying a complete engine?

    yea but will replace all gaskets on new engine and have it sound before i drop it in there

    I suspect it to be needing a cambelt more than a HG. I'd ignore the HG and do: cambelt, waterpump, aux belt, oilpump and a good clean through. Not heard of a HG failure on a 1.8T...
