Joys of launch control. No bogging down from 4500 launch. If you did that without it`d bog so you`d have to launch at 5k+. Makes me want to get a meaty clutch in it and go have some fun

To be honest I do like the 1bar setting, feels 'enough' for daily driving but not got over the 'DEFCON 1' setting yet ;P

i was wondering where you got the black facia plate from in the above pic (the bit under the climate controls)
ive just had an alpine single din fitted and the guy is struggling to find me a blank facia plate to cover the gap from the double din
... and also how did you attach the facia adapter... the guy couldnt get it to sit flush and said there was nowhere for it to clip onto so mine is quite loose atm
its kinda fitted but it looks like **** atm and has a gap at the top near the ESP button/cup holder
so its going back next week to get sorted,
not too happy about it really cos it took them 7 hours!!! and its still not right
any help would be appreciated pal
Tuffty has factory fit single din dash. The pieces either side of his stereo will secure to factory location for factory single din stereo.
ok, thought he had double din originally
so how would i secure the pieces either side of the stereo when going into a doube din "hole"
I did have double DIN originally but I swapped it out for OE single DIN parts from another member years ago...
I used an OE single DIN cage, aircon unit and lower cubby... no idea off hand how you would support a single DIN in a double DIN cage mate... double DIN cage was metal, single DIN is plastic from memory
ive got a single din cage (the one that came with my alpine headunit)
its the little adapters either side that wont sit flush or clip to anything
my double din stereo and cage has been removed so filling the gap with a blank plate/cubby hole is what im trying to sort

Its been so long I can't remember exactly but to remove the double DIN cage you have to remove the centre console and lower half of the dash to remove... if you haven't done this then the double DIN stuff is still there... the single DIN frame is designed to allow the aircon unit to sit higher up (its a different wider unit) and has a hole for the cubby...
There isn't anything commercially available to fill the double DIN 8L hole, an early A4 one can be modded to fit IIRC but even then you have to find a way to fix it into the hole which is the reason I went for a full conversion...
The facia you linked too is for an 8P not an 8L so no idea if it could be made to fit

Ouch Paul, not good fella. Is there much tension on the wastegate? Or do you think it's just "one of those things" with a cast manifold?

I think my wobbly engine mounts and the fact the DP had moved a bit (was knocking on the rack which ironically I was going to sort today) contributed to its demise... there is a flexi and a slip joint and was fitted under its natural position (where it sat) so shouldn't be under any tension but the DP is a big lever at teh end of the day and launching an AWD car with this kinda power is always going to lead to something failing...
I have 3 options currently... remove head or engine (required to get the turbo/mani off) and reweld the Tial stub looking to strengthen etc, sell on the turbo kit and move to the next level, paark up and walk away for 12 months coming back to it when I have the motivation which is currently lacking...
I won't sell the car what ever happens but it is 'reflection' time I feel...

When my cam snapped i felt the same but now the engine is out and i'm building a new one bigger and better than the last one the feeling is great but the empty pockets isn't but we all know thats the down side to modified cars.
I'm really enjoying my rebuild as i just love the research into making it a better engine

There's a lot of boundary pushing going on at the moment and it's highlighting lots of weak areas on these cars. It's a big pain when things go wrong but it's also a learning curve. 1.8T tuning is still moving forward at an astonishing rate considering the age of the little power plant. And tuffty, you've helped highlight another weakness to the community which will help others if not yourself in the future.
You're lucky enough to have the resources at your disposal to sort any issues you have, just imagine you were a driveway mechanic working off axel stands with a £10 halfords socket set lol.
Whatever you do don't take the car off the road or you may never get round to sorting it. Maybe take another ASN break, get some new plans together then come back (in the warmer weather) with new enthusiasm and hit those figures you've always wanted :thumbsup:
Thanks for the support guys... Bill is welding it back on as we speak... its looking good too, thicker rod and higher amps to get the bugger to stick... will still need to come off though as I would rather we went over it and strengthened it properly... its properly tight welding in the back of the engine bay but Bill (the super hero he is) is doing a fecking awesome job...
Feeling much better about it all at the moment but it has got me to thinking about the next step... I was always planning on progressing to a tubular manifold and this may accelerate those plans a bit... its not so much that the manifold is rubbish as tbh its been on the car for well over 3 years now and other than a couple of minor issues its been fine for the most part...
I am seriously considering selling up the turbo as a kit with the DP, exhaust mani, Tial gate and some other ancillary stuff (coolant and oil lines etc) and going for a TSR tubular mani, GTX2867r and Tial 0.86 hotside... the compressor maps are very close and the GTX28 looks like an interesting turbo...
I am not that interested in getting more power, not overly fussed about going 2ltr (I quite like the fact its still a 1.8 and making lots of power) and was always after a drivable 400hp which I think the GTX2867r may do... plus its a little different...
Will see how stuff goes... getting the car home is the first task...

The gtx28 does look like a very interesting turbo! I didn't really realise its potential until recently as more and more gtx data and info leaks onto the forums lately, especially on vortex where they rate the gtx28 very highly

I havent updated it in my thread but i have the gtx2867r tuffty. unfortunately, and in keeping with being a tight **** i have the T25 Version. a tial hitside is my 'dream' if you will. and something i can upgrade to if i ever get bored of the T25 2867. Its an awesome turbo from all of the reports ive read (i did alot of reading as per).
To be realistic the mani you have has done well considering its just had a wastgate tube welded on. Its obv a bit hit and miss welding to cast. and more of an **** if it goes wrong than a bolt and gasket setup.
Is that too high? it needs at least 5psi more i think
