    Hi Chaps/ Chapettes

Random question, (although it probably isn't that relevant at the moment) I've got regarding driving a turbo. My previous motor was a Honda Civic Type R and to get it going the only way forward was bouncing off the rev limiter. Don't get me wrong, it was great fun.

My question is whether I need to go that high on a turbo engine. I've got an 07 S3 and I'm thinking that maybe staying within the turbo is more "beneficial" to me getting places a little faster.

I know this is a proper noob question but, hey, if you don't ask.

    Cheers Chaps/ Chapettes

with the S3 the turbo starts spooling nicely from about 2,200rpm ish but really comes on song from about 3k
so anywhere from there upwards and ull be having fun
but take my word on this and loads of others, you want to get it mapped!! totally transforms the car!!
have a look at my sig and ull see what i mean, remember standard the puts out about 275bhp on v-power
congrats on the buy and enjoy!!

Congrats on your new motor. Standard spec makes max power at 6K so you don't need to rev it too much past their, untill your tuned up.

on a turbo car once the power drops off ( like when the turbo runs out of steam) then there is no more power there just wasted revs if you stay within the turbo powerband then you will get the most benefit out of it

    Map it.

Ive had a CTR, fine car BTW but a mapped S3 pulls like a train right to the red line. Lots and lots of torque so much more punchy.
Delivers more grunt than a CTR...no surprise then.
The CTR is more of a laugh in the dry when wringing its neck but the S3 sees it off overall. But then it should, its costs LOADS more!

Great car to a greater car.
    Enjoy.

    Cheers

yep at 70mph the car is running at around 3k give or take. that is of course in 6th, put it down a couple cogs and then it rockets.

How inconvenient !! they should do away with that Turbo and put a bigger engine in instead ...3.2 would be about right i should think :undwech:

Even with the engine remapped,on the standard turbo, you will begin to run out of puff at anything above 6500rpm,and in any case you will be at or beyond both peak power and torque,so there is no point hanging on until the rev limiter.

If you've had a bigger turbo fitted, again there is little point trying to hit the limiter, unless you've had the valve train done,to permit higher revs.
Turbocharged engines generally do not need to revved to within an inch of their lives, and most of the benefits are in the midrange where the torque curve is flat, and the power is good.

Thanks for the replies chaps. I guess this is one of the joys of owning a new motor, learning how to drive it properly. Now all I need is this damn snow to go!
The re-map seems like a very popular option, best hope for a decent payrise this year!

the map is the best piece of money you can spend on you car!
ive had a fault on my car, so its gone back to Audi for it to be fixed under warranty so ive had to remove it just to be safe, and id forgotten what the standard car was like and i cant wait to get the map back on, its so much more exciting with it on!
if you can stretch to a map this yea i would before the VAT goes up and as well a couple of the mappers are doing deals before the new year. Evolve who i use are doing 30% off and cant rate them highly enough and revo who a lot of people use are doing £100 of their map

    I do :ninja:

Or we can just go buy a 3.2, realise we bought the wrong car and hate on S3 owners whilst trying to pump money into the V6 realising it ain't going nowhere and relying on the one thing you got left..pride..or stubborness! :p

    Just kidding btw Paddy. :eyebrows:

What have I missed? What's all this banter between S3 drivers and the 3.2l owners club?
A quick scan on the bible that is Parkers shows the 3.2l to be slower, less powerful car. Am I allowed to say that or have I opened a can of worms?

Yea but a Micra is slower than a Ferrari but that doesn't make the Ferrari a better car .

Its horses for courses mate ! what i am saying is there is a place for the S3 and the 3.2 but just because Parkers guide says the S3 is half a second quicker to 60mph that doesn't make it a better car.

Merry xmas to you as well and enjoy your new car :)

    Agree.

There is a diminishing return when you jump from a 3.2 to S3.
Less so if you have tuning planned from the off.

My comment was a little tongue in cheek if im honest. I'll be honest, having a civic type-r beforehand I was adamant I'd stick to a naturally aspirated engine. Having the driven the S3 I was turned pretty quickly. I appreciate what your saying chaps. Plus lets be honest, although the S3 is quicker the 3.2 isn't exactly slow is it!
It is indeed horses for courses and I'm sure both can put that "demented smile" (as one of my friends put it) on your face!
