Is it possible to get lighting under the Ac unit? Has anyone refitted the red light at the front inside door handles? My old a3 8l had a dimmer switch for the light pack..is this available for a 8P2

    Hi Robin...

i'm just looking for a bit of info on these and not an order....

Do you know when activating the footwell lights on the 08 pre-facelife 8p2 s3... Do you know if it gives you the menu on the display like the 58 8p3.... The reason why im asking... I put in all the cabling and even wired through a custom oem switch for the ch/lh light feature only to find out on the s3 that it was just a simple case of coding and they appeared on the menu....

if it didnt i'd just set the brightness high and also included a hidden resistor just so I have constant access to brightness levels without having to go through vcds all the time...? Thanks

Hi Guys. I have just received a second hand kit from a member on the forum and I cannot get it to work. My car is a 2009 s3 8P facelift (has the DRLs.) I have followed Robins guide to a T, making sure to plug the positive feed into the correct space on the cluster, and I have made a good earth. I have also enabled the footwell lights in VCDS. The lights will simply not come on though. The bulbs are LEDs, would that make any difference? Thanks guys.

This is doing my head in, making no sense at all. Even tried running a piece of wire directly from the terminal that the number 7 wire would be touching, but no dice. Do ALL the lights need to be plugged in and working for ANY of them to work? I tried touching the end of the number 7 terminal with a face testing screwdriver, and it lit up! But yet when I plug the connector back in, I get nothing.

    Any help appreciated.

Have you checked the polarity on the led's? Some led's work whichever terminal the +ve is attached to, some don't. (Some change to red).

I have tested the LEDs outside the car using a spare battery, and there is only one way the units can connect when in the car. They also came plugged in from the previous owner so I dont think its a polarity issue. Thanks for replying though :icon_thumright:

Are the LEDs error free versions? Pre 11MY cars don't support standard oem led lights - you will need error free led bulbs.

To be honest I don't know. Its one of your looms, but I do not know about the LEDs. I tested them all outside the car last night, and only one of them worked! So I took them apart and to say they are a mess inside is an understatement. Total balls of a job they are, not sure where the previous owner got them. So tonight I am going to try plugging in a standard light with standard bulb to see if that's the issue.

If I only plug a bulb into the drivers side front connector, would it still light up, even if the other 3 connectors are not plugged in to anything?

20141224_184128.jpg Hi guys, I fitted some footwell lights with normal LED's and they work.

Had to fit a single standard 501 bulb on the wiring. here are some pics

    Just finished doing this today,
Used led boards that come with the holders.

Does anyone know if its possible to have these come on all the time whilst driving but at a dimmer level using VCDS?
Can do this with wiring etc but if theres a easier way...

You can't unless you wire them directly to a permanent 12v feed.

    Hi Guys.

Going to be doing this in the near future, but dont have access to VCDS yet, so am thinking of wiring it to the interior light feed.

Where is a good place to pick the feed up ? im guessing the fuse for the interior light is constant +12v.

    any tips welcome !

Just a side comment; you cannot use resistive dimming for LEDs, you have to use an LED dimmer.
Resistive dimmers reduce the voltages, so makes an tungsten bulb run continuously at a lower power (voltage). But the LED requires a minimum voltage to "strike", and is relatively insensitive to voltage above that minimum, so LED dimmers reduce the amount of time the bulb is alight, hence the amount of light they produce. (Simplified for clarity)
Note also if you have a error-free/canbus driver, you may provoke an error by reducing the load (higher resistance) or by providing a duplicate low brightness circuit.

Easy solution is to use a different bulb (like LED strips) which you can then use as you want (eg drive off a DRL control box, so only on when driving, and dimmed to half bright when side lights on) which then has no conflict with the normal puddle lights.

    Silky

just ordered a loom off the good man robin. A little advice if you can. I have a 59 plate black edition and i am assuming I have the same wiring as you with the 3 large plugs. I cannot tell as i have not removed the trim as yet. all cool with this, however after interrogating VCDS i have the same options as you to code the car, however I also have another option which is Byte 12. This gives the option to tick a box which says " footwell lights with terminal 58D active"

Any ideas? Leave well alone ?

Also once coded does it present the menu in the DIS to adjust the brightness and switch them on and off or will then simply just come on when i flick the headlights on ?

sorry to be a pain to everyone else but i might also do the rear footwells at a later date. Does anyone know how to remove the plastic sill plates so i can thread the wiring under here ?

Can someone clarify for me : Footwell lights are not controllable from the DIS? I.e in terms of brightness, or when they come on and go off ?

I think it depends on what year of car. I have a 2012 car with factory lights which is controllable from the DIS. I just retrofitted the loom from Robin into the wife's 2010 (59 plate) and coded with VCDS and it opened the menu on the DIS the same as my 2012 car. I do have the later wiring in the car the same as Silky. Not sure about earlier cars.

OK I am completely new. I just bought a 2015 A3 2.0 and would love to put some lights on the footwell. Preferably red. So what is a VAG-COM to turn the function on?
Do you ship to U.S.A? And are your instructions also current for a 2015 model?

    Thanks

Only valid for 8p models and not 8v as I understand it.

VAG-COM now known as VCDS is the software that is used to make all the changes to VAG cars. It runs along side a VCDS cable that is sold by Ross-Tech. Armed with this you can do anything that a main dealer can do. But DO NOT be temped to purchase a cloned cable with outdated software, these can either not work or potentially damage your car. you could possibly end up with a huge paperwight sitting outside your home. Also with original cables and registered software you'll get updates and support if needed. hope this helps.
