Hi folks, I'm looking for some more specialist / engineers opinions regarding a faulty Koni adjustor which resulted in me sending the kit back under warranty.

The kit was on the car for 16 months and never felt safe on my 3.2 TT, a problem I reported to Koni many times during 2014. After much dialogue with the UK importers we agreed to adjust the kit in terms of ride height and rebound. Previously the car was set to FULLSOFT yet the car felt way over-damped. On closer inspection the front springs manufactured by Vogtland in Germany were heavily compressed "coil-bound" and despite the kit running close to the top of the adjustment the car was very low at the front. The rear was fine.

As a previous owner of Koni Sports, I am familiar with the adjustment and the reason I bought Koni again was due to their reputation and from my previous experience.

After discussion with the importer I decided to adjust the rebound during a short drive. While attempting this I noted the nearside adjustor had seized and from reading some posts about koni adjustors, I applied some pressure to the adjustor but it was seized good and proper. Eventually the Adjustor nipple snapped however at this point the kit had to be returned to Koni under warranty anyway.

Koni were great in collecting the kit in December and unfortunately they have taken a seriously long time to reply to questions and have the kit inspected.

The following pics outline the Koni warranty Report. Koni offered me a good will gesture of £350 which I rejected as they seemed intent in blaming the installation of my kit which I feel is simply a shocking position. (No pun intended!)

Keen to get some thoughts - obviously this is only a short summary but I am completely transparent and happy to answer any questions and highlight timelines so users can see what to expect and who they are dealing with.

Many of you are possibly already running Koni kit, have previously run Koni kit like myself or are considering Koni in the future. I hope this post is of some use to you.

Incidentally, the initial response from Koni was the typical dinosaur approach "we've never had any problems with this kit before" and when I presented them with evidence of other reported faults they didn't acknowledge my message!

Unlucky bud, Koni must sell hundreds if not thousands of suspension kits! Surely they are going to experience one failure at some point? Anyways, my only experience with Koni are a set of used top adjustable shocks on my mk2 golf, and they still adjust for damping despite looking rather battered!

Hope it works out for you!

That's really interesting - I had Koni Sports on my 1989 mk2 GTi with H&R springs. They worked perfectly on the car and never had any trouble with the adjustment either seizing or breaking. The car handled wonderfully and they were on the car for many years. I had hoped for a similar experience with my TT however they simply didn't feel as good. Clearly with coil-bound springs it's not too difficult to see why I had complaints of the ride quality being too firm and unsafe.

There was some indication from Koni that it was user error which I had to contradict. I openly admitted to forcing the adjustment in hope it would free off the seizure and ended breaking the little tab/nipple for the rebound. A few months into the warranty, Koni issued a statement that the adjustor had been forced. My response was a sarcastic - "really?" I told you this back in October 2014.

Just an utter disgrace. I got an update from Damian at DPM on Monday and Koni are sending me brand new fronts. This is another disgrace as I told Frank at Koni, directly that I wanted a full refund and they have replied with 2 different scenarios:

1. good will gesture of £350
2. this latest one with new fronts.

What nobody appreciates is that give the torture, I replaced the Koni's back in December with KW V3's on the car and I couldn't be happier with them. So what good is a returned suspension kit?

Incidentally, Koni have reviewed and updated their warranty T&C'S on their website so the conditions are much stricter.

What are they doing? In an epiphany, I decided the company is a dinosaur. Rather than help their customers with advice, faults and warranty issues they make it as hard as possible.

Disgraceful - I thoroughly recommend people stay away from Koni.
