Found plenty of threads on the whole Mr Muscle turbo cleaning thing but non for my engine and therefore I have no idea where I should be putting the stuff and I am desperate to try this as I'm pretty sure this will solve a lot of my issues.

Anyone with any images or descriptions for this engine?

    Thanks so much.

What's the engine code? 56plate could be BKD, BMM or BMN if I remember correctly.

Check in the front of the service book or sticker in spare wheel well.

Have a look back through my posting history, there's a thread somewhere where I talked a user called 'slizza86' (or similar I think) through doing it on the bkd engine. It had a few pictures etc too. I can't find the link from my phone at the minute.

That's basically it, just use a silicone pipe and make sure it's guided down into turbo and not into cylinder head

Thanks for that... I think I might take a look before I start and go ahead with it.

The part where putting the stuff in to the cylinder head is scaring me hah

How would you know it's 100% gone in it the right place ?

The tube should go near enough straight down into the turbo, it would have to bend a fair bit to go towards the engine. You should be able to tell if you hit any proper resistance before the bottom of the turbo.

There's also a thread for stripping the turbo and cleaning it thoroughly in the FAQ section, which should be a better fix if you don't mind a bit more of an involved job.

i have a 2007 140 tdi and just done mr muscle and it is a pain in the bum as with my engine i had to get it on a ramp and had to take off bits from the top and bottom to get at the egr pipe on top of the turbo and put it in that way,it depends on which engine you have.
It is not hard just make sure you take your time and take loads of pics so you no which bolts go where lol

Not the best of pictures and I know it's filthy but that's what happens when you rally your car in the back of my pals demo yard..

Is it this black pipe that has to come off for the me muscle to go in ?

Of the exhaust side, or none of those ? :)

That photo shows the intake side of the turbo, at the bottom is the pipe to air filter and mid photo is boost hose to intercooler. The bit you are after is towards exhaust side, and on top of turbo, on the manifold it's self, it looks like the pipe with 2 Allen key bolts shown in picture, but on top of the turbo/manifold. (the one shown in the photo is oil return line).

The one your after is a metal pipe about 6 inches long and connects manifold to EGR cooler.

    I think I've almost got this...hopefully..

Am I right in thinking that the metal pipe goes from the egr valve to the cooler and then there is a shorter pipe that comes out the other side of the egr cooler and connects to the turbo?

Also does the actuator rod move when revving the car? I was under it earlier with my mrs revving the engine but couldn't see any movement , I couldn't really move it with my hand either but couldn't really get a good grip on it .

Sorry to drive you nuts SmithyAG

Don't worry mate! Yeah the shorter pipe from cooler to turbo is the one you want. Once removed you can feed the tube into the turbo through the hole in the manifold.

With the engine running the actuator probably won't move at all as there is no load on the engine. I found the easiest way was to use a hand held vacuum pump connected to the vac line to the turbo, to help move the actuator (engine off obviously).

Ok thanks a lot , I think it's all finally clicked in and feel more confident now .

Yeah I think I read in one of your links that you should move the rod a few times whilst doing the clean or something like that, I'll have to go through that part again to make sure .

Appreciate all the info and advice you've given mate

Once I have the egr pipe off , roughly how far should the tube go In?

I'm just a bit paranoid about it going the wrong way in to the cylinder head .

Only about 4 or 5 inches if I remember. You should know if it's going the wrong way as it would have to bend backwards on itself towards the engine. If it's going into the turbo it should go pretty much straight down.

So is it down this pipe that you feed your silicone tubing? I've highlighted the pipe yellow. This looks like it goes to the turbo. ImageUploadedByTapatalk1397297134.055796.jpg

That is the egr pipe which if you follow goes in to one side of the egr cooler at the back of the engine, another short pipe Is on the other side of the egr cooler which then goes to the turbo , once the short pipe is removed then you can then feed it in, you can't feed from where you have highlighted.

It's took me a while to get my head around it but the help on this that I've had mainly from SmithyAG and input from tdi-man has helped loads.

Ah I see. Is it best to take away all the air intake so you have better access to the back of the engine where the egr cooler is?

You can but its a lot of work, I did it from underneath the car and just moved the cat to one side for access. Far less to remove from underneath.

From above I believe the EGR cooler has to come off for proper access, which Is tricky and involves clamping coolant lines.

From below sounds the better option then. I don't have any over boost or limp mode issues but I have a slight siren noise. I'm hoping this will fix it.

The siren noise has been the topic of many debates. Some people have it for thousands of miles and years without issue.

Mine always had the noise but it got noticeably worse/louder in the run up to my turbo giving up.

I personally wouldn't worry about a slight siren noise , I hear so many tdi's with same noise is , I've had it on a few of mine with no issue at all , no oil loss or anything .

I think the mr muscle is to cure over boosting from the sticky vanes, and if you have lack of boost at low end revs .

I'm just giving it a go out mainly out of curiousity, it seems I've pretty much cured my problems by cleaning egr valve and replacing all the seals and clips in the boost pipes , I've had no limp mode or smoke since and no more overboost error code flagging up on the diagnostic.

Yeah it looks a lot of messing about from the top for sure, it looks pretty easy once the cat is removed.

Just purchased the mr muscle , now I'm trying to source some silicone hose...someone said maybe try place that sells fish tanks and stuff like that , could t find any down the diy store .

Silicone hose can be had at pet stores I believe. Halfords also sell blue silicone hose, but its a styling accessory so is ridiculously expensive. Some fuel hose would do in a pinch.

Just a thought, if you want to contain as much of the mr muscle in the turbo as possible, undo the clamp holding the cat in place and move the cat to one side slightly (you may need to unbolt it from the big bracket where it leads down to the rest of the exhaust). Then cover the outlet from the turbo with a pringles tube lid, it fits perfectly and stops any mr muscle from leaking out. You can do it without undoing the cat but I thought it best to seal the turbo so none foamed into the exhaust (not that it would do any harm, but I was cleaning the turbo, not the cat lol).

Hmm I have plenty of Pringles in my house hah nice one

Yeah I see that big bracket, I may move , I'll see how I get on ..

I got under the car earlier and I could get my hands up to the egr pipe and reckon I could undo both ends without disconnecting the cat..

One problem I have is that my mrs just went to hit me with a broom stick and I blocked but it whacked my wrist bone and it's absolutely killing me and can barely bend it now...

    Gotta love the mrs :D

It should be possible without undoing the cat, and leaving the cat in place has its own benefits, such as not having to wrestle with the v band clamp that holds it on, and not having to re-seat the gasket when re fitting. I only undid the cat as I figured it gave me slightly better access, but like I said, you should be fine without undoing it.

You want to watch out for that mrs of yours, if she's attacking you with broom sticks and the like!

Yeah that clamp is off putting for me ..I think I'll be ok without moving it .

Yeah the mrs is quite a feisty one...all I said was ' I think your bum has got larger ' prob not the best thing to say when I look back on it. Lol
