Right folks im interested in doing this mirror link thing thats been done loads over on Audizine, the thread starter is below, but with it been an American site i was wondering if anybody in the uk has done it?

If yes did you use a similar setup to whats listed below?

Im on Android Galaxy S7, so just need slightly different wiring to make it work.

Heres the tread and whats needed...cheers

**UPDATED**
Thanks everyone for feedback to this post, I have updated these instructions to reflect the suggestions below and the requests for additional clarification.

Instructions: External Video Input to MMI Screen/Phone Mirroring

With a few simple parts, you can plug and play your phone (or even iPad, Roku, Apple TV) to mirror on the dash MMI screen. I installed this on my B8.5 S5, and the results are great. There will be lots of cables/wires/adapters involved, but it is an easy job and will cost you less than $200 and only a few minutes to install. I wrote this for mirroring my iPhone 6S, but it will work with any phone that has a video out adapter. Since the folks at Apple are greedy-planned-obsolescence-proprietary-cord scumbags, the Apple Lightning-to-HDMI adapter will cost $50, where those lucky to have a Droid phone will only need to spend half of that amount.

Car: B8.5 S5 (manual FTMFW!)
MMI Version: 3G+ w/Nav
Difficulty: 0.5 beer (0 beers being easy, 12 beers being a full day job)
Time: Less than 1 play-through of the song In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida.
Cost: $150 - $200 depending on iPhone vs. Droid.
Why: I mostly use it to run Waze through the MMI screen when I drive long trips. Praise Jebus for Waze.
What it will do: Mirror your phone screen to the MMI screen. Do not attempt to stream Fast & Furious to your screen, your Audi will self destruct.
What it won’t do: Allow you to listen to FM/Sirius/Jukebox/SD card music in your Audi while the video is mirroring. This kit ports the video AND sound to your car, so for music you have to also run music off your phone. Which is fine by me since I usually stream internet radio in the car (recommend Radioparadise.com) or MP3s on the phone (recommend Porcupine Tree).

** Before you start: You will need to have enabled the Video-in-motion (VIM) feature on your Audi through a VAG-Com. It is an easy hack, and there are lots of FAQs/resources online about how to do it. You just need to have the Ross Tech VAG-Com cable/software , or find a friendly Audi owner who will do it for you (I enjoy helping local VW/Audi people hack their cars with my VAG-Com).

What you'll need:
Audi AMI RCA Cable Adapter (I bought OEM since some people had compatibility issues with the knockoff ebay/Amazon cables): LINK $80 (thanks Pierre at West Palm Beach Audi!)

NOTE: You need to have 2 charging cables; 1 mini USB to charge the RCA-to-HDMI converter (required for converter to work), and another that plugs into the iPhone lighting to HDMI adapter (optional, but recommended since you will want the phone to charge while mirroring). With both of those, the phone will charge while you mirror the screen.

Instruction Steps:

1. In your glove box, install the Audi AMI/MMI RCA adapter.

2. Plug the 3 RCA wires into the RCA-to-HDMI adapter (you'll need 3 of the RCA male-to-male adapters). Make sure the RCA-to-HDMI adapter switch is set to NTSC.

3. Plug the short HDMI cable into the RCA-to-HDMI adapter, and plug the other end of the HDMI cable into the Apple iPhone Lightning-to-HDMI adapter.

4. Plug the Apple Lightning-to-HDMI adapter into your iPhone, or what I did was install a Lightning extension cable, so you can then run the extension cable behind the glove box and down into the center console. I have my cable coming up into my ashtray so I can leave my phone there to charge while I use the adapters.

5. Once you have it all plugged in and powered, go into the Settings menu (while in Media), and scroll down for the options to switch the input to NTSC (vs. PAL) and 16:9 aspect ratio. In my experience, the phone mirror function would not work when I used PAL and the screen would be compressed if you chose 4:3 ratio.

One part of the install you can't see here is the iPhone cable I have running up through the roof of the glove box, under the center console and into the ashtray. Next step is for me to install a power source in the glove box so I do not have to run the 2 charging cables and dual power outlet into the ashtray power outlet. I'll get to that in the near future.

Additional notes:
- This setup requires that both sound and video be utilized from your phone, which means that you can't listen to XM while mirroring your phone. For me, I run Waze while also streaming music off my iPhone at the same time.
- You can substitute other devices for the iPhone; such as a Droid phone, Roku (it's been done), Apple TV (it's been done!), iPad, etc

Now you can impress friends/cops/lovers with your car that has Waze built in to the infotainment center.

Just bumping this up....

I've also read that you can do this wireless using a wifi hub in your car????
I'm using a Galaxy S9 and going wireless. I cut out the HDMI cable by using a Screen Beam mini 2. So using an OEM AMI-RCA adapter (4F0051510AA), an HDMI to RCA Converter and plugging a Screen Beam mini 2 into that I can cast my screen to the MMI screen.

So I’ve bought all the correct cables and hooked them up as directed. I only get a black screen with no video or audio. I’ve gone everything very well and no idea why I can’t get a mirror image on my MMI screen. I have a 14 A6 Quattro TDI using an iPhone X to link up to it.

? Soo I’m confused. Aren’t you the one who wrote this entire thread? And you never got it to work? Looks like it’s working in pictures you provided at the end. I invested a lot of money on these cords, I was expecting this to work based on this highly detailed thread stating that this is how it’s done.

There was another guy named Longwolf on the audizine forum who was the original author of the post with the pictures.
On a side note, if you do not know anyone with a VAGcom and your local Audi dealer won't turn on VIM (video in motion) for you and if you want to Shell out another$100 or so you can buy yourself the OBDeleven device. This device let's you plug into your OBD2 Port and if you own an Android phone you can connect to it and make some modifications to your vehicle, like turning on VIM. Be advised some people have said you don't need to buy the pro version unless you need extra coding. If so, you can purchase it through the Google app store. Also, to make modifications requires credits and you will need to purchase at least 90 to turn on VIM.

I have already activated video in motion. And I have personal VCDS. Also Im iPhone so the OBDeleven is useless to me.

? Soo I’m confused. Aren’t you the one who wrote this entire thread? And you never got it to work? Looks like it’s working in pictures you provided at the end. I invested a lot of money on these cords, I was expecting this to work based on this highly detailed thread stating that this is how it’s done.

I copied the thread, from another forum, i got it working just about but was in black and white and very hit and miss, and Samsung S7 doesnt support rSap i think its called.

So it wasnt going to work for me, i now Have A7 with Tech pack High and have tryed getting it working using the Ami cable and also trying a chrome cast and again had very little luck.

I spent about £60 and hours trying to figure it out but after two different cars ( A5 and A7 ) and still not getting it working anywhere near reliably i gave up to it..

If anybody knows how to get it working with an samsung S7 reliably and able to either cast or mirror link my phone to display im all ears

Hopefully you find this helpful. I will just post the pictures up. Pretty straightforward.
Buy genuine Audi ami/rca adapter. Buy screenbeam mini 2. Buy 3 male to male rca coupler adapters. Buy HDMI to rca converter, I chose the ViewHD because I didn't want to go cheap because I wanted the best quality and wanted to make sure this would work. Plus the AMI adapter into the plug. Put the couplers onto the rca cables. Plus the RCA cables into the ViewHD converter. Plug the screenbeam into the HDMI port of the converter. Plug in the USB power cords. Hit media on your console and select source as external video input. Turn on your device's smart view or screen mirror option and you should be off and running. I can't make this any simpler. I included the picture of the OBDeleven device to remind you that you do need VIM (Video in motion) turned on in your settings. I can't answer any questions because this is pretty much it.

Yeah, you're on that 2017 4G. I'm still driving my 2014 A6 with 3G. I've only tried the voice commands for the built in NAV to enter directions as I do have the wifi enabled in the car. This was also prior to mirroring my phone to the MMI.

I’m in a late 2015, 2016MY S7 so I don’t have CarPlay.

I had voice control on my 2014 A7 (MMI 3G High) but there was no mobile voice integration around then, only voice control for MMI actions.

What happens with your phone Bluetooth connected, and you long press the speak button on the steering wheel? (Without mirroring enabled) Do you get any voice control over your connected device?

When I long press the talk button nothing happens. I'm also running Pie on my Galaxy S9. It does not turn on Android connect automatically when the Bluetooth syncs. Sorry pressing the talk button will allow me to do the standard speech for navigation and such.

Hello

In order to use the cast dongle the screenbeam mini 2 does the car have to have a sim card a internet connection installed in it to work?

In answer to your question. No wifi is needed in the vehicle. It works like a Chromecast. It will be detectable by your phone.

Thanks buddy, just trying to find some alternatives to yours as im in the uk abit hard

As my A3 doesnt have a sim card slot so justed wanted to ask if i can still use a casting dongle to do what you did oliva but from what you said i can

@olivaman

Is there anything I need to do to the MMI system in the car itself or will this just work straight away and display the phone's display after connecting everything up

Thanks

If everything is done correctly you should see the screen beam image first when you switch to external video source. The biggest thing is to make sure you were able to activate video in motion whether it be through VCDS, VAGCom or ODBeleven. Nothing to be done to the MMI. Just follow the above images in this thread. I'm not sure what kind of drastic differences there are in the UK. I will say one thing. My screen beam came with an HDMI extender. Do not use it. For some reason the integrity of the signal is lost and I only received a blue screen when switching to external video when using the extender.

If you are using the OBDeleven you will need the Pro version as that is the one that will enable you to change basic settings. The normal and pro version are the same device, just a difference in activation license.

This is an awesome set up. Waiting for my ScreenBeam to arrive tomorrow. Was wondering one thing. Are you able to still charge your phone with this set up.? I only have two USB ports on my car charger adapter and one is in use for the SB and the other for the VGA adapter. Thanks.

I only have 2 USB ports as well. I actually had to add another cigarette lighter adapter to the rear outlet and run a wire up to charge the phone. I ordered a twin socket to put both adapters in the center console then.

Just read the specs for ScreenBeam. It does not work with iOS. Any way to get it to work? Any other similar device that does play well with Apple? Thanks.

I checked the whole subject, I have one question before I do anything ... my Audi a4 b8 2010 and there is no navigation only symphony audio system. is there a chance to connect it ???

For what it's worth, if anybody has an iPhone and their car is equipped with Carplay you can mirror your screen onto the car for about $6 (if your phone is jailbroken / you're able to jailbreak it).

you can write something more about it. what I have to buy and how to connect ???

Thanks

After mirroring the device would it be possible loading the android auto app on the smartphone and using the mmi wheel to navigate through the menu?

Basically after mirroring are you able to navigate using the audi interface wheel through the android auto app or is this not possible, your just using the mirror to see the phone screen and not able to intervene.

Howardfly I'm in Glasgow Scotland and would like to know IF u got screen mirror to work or not. As I don't have sat nav activated n this seems like a solution to me rather than pay stealer rates

Great,
Any idea if this works in a 2011/12 A6 with rmc MMI version. Version is RMC_EU_P11096.
Anyone knows ?

So I’ve bought all the correct cables and hooked them up as directed. I only get a black screen with no video or audio. I’ve gone everything very well and no idea why I can’t get a mirror image on my MMI screen. I have a 14 A6 Quattro TDI using an iPhone X to link up to it.
Troubleshooting technology can be complex. Have you checked for any software updates on both your iPhone X and the MMI system? Sometimes a simple update can resolve compatibility issues and help establish the mirror image on your A6 Quattro TDI's MMI screen.
