Yes another one! A friend of mine bought a STI last night and I was so jealous as I was half thinking of selling the S3 and getting the impreza sti.
So a side by side from 30mph on the closed road was organised! To my absolute surprise, by time we hit about 120, he only had 1 car lengths advantage. He was a lot more surprised than me. His car only has a magnex exhaust and dump valve as extra, but basically 280bhp as standard.
Me with a remap, b5 tip, forge dv and jetex.
After that we decided to do a local twisty mountain loop, and this is where the S3 showed up big style. The roads were damp/wet and the ESP was switched off. The grip was really good coming out of the 2nd and 3rd gear corners and I was really able to open up Hugh gaps. Later he was saying that the rear of the sti was all over the road coming out of the corners and said that S3 looked very impressive in the tight twisty s, with all 4 wheels slightly drifting around.
Bottom line, I now have a new found respect for the old girl that was slowly diminishing. So iv decided to keep her for another while and invest a bit more money. For a 11 year old fat hatch she's got my attention again.

    Cool story bro....

So many :wtf: in there I don't know where to start.

Can you just close roads of in Dublin then without getting in trouble? Is he actually running a proven 280bhp?
    Sounds like

    a)His car is broken....
b)He can't drive it as well as you can drive your S3, as he only got it the night before
    c)You're a driving God

Have another re-run after his car has been health checked and he has more confidence in driving it in damp/wet conditions. The STI was an iconic rally car for a reason ;-)

realistically you will both be similar powers and torque, give or take 10 or so, and accounting for his huge transmission losses. But the weight deficit will account for him being quicker generally.
Nice one anyway, glad you're happy with your car, sometimes it takes something like this to rekindle the love.

Totally agree- but not everyone then goes on a public forum and posts about closing roads, going over 100 and admitting to racing another car all on the public high way :jester:

Its no suprise for me, i raced one of my friends EVO X with sequential semi-automatic gearbox. We started from about 50km/h and finished on 4th gear and 150km/h, i won about 1-1,5 cars length. Then we started from zero to about 100km/h, and again he lost, but less, about 1-2meters only. He was shifting gears by himself all the time, and he is a really good driver.

I have 2002 S3 with costum remap and everything else was stock.

Was that Gary's STI? Scoobys really need to be running right and can take some time to feel confident throwing about. I had a legacy b4 280bhp bla bla bla, was stupid fun on the ragged edge with the bilsteins, I reckon the my old standard s3 after a map wouldn't be too far behind from a A to B marker I have on my private racetrack :eyebrows:, But the scooby was much more entertaining along the way. Although fuelling the scooby got tiring for the 5% messing 95% commuting. That along with the **** interior puts it below the s3. They are a perfect all rounder.

Later that night we swapped cars for a while and went around the mountain twisty s again, S3 felt a lot more planted and secure vs a fairly lively back end on the STI. FYI it had a scan and smoke test before he bought it with 54k on the clock(service history too)
if you've never put your foot down in your S3 and had a tussle with another car, please try pull the middle one. That's why I done have a diesel, estate, 1.6 etc. got it to have a bit of fun, and plan A is working fine.

What STI was it? UK or Jap spec? What was the DCCD at?

On the straight I can see the S3 keeping with it but the twisties is where the STI should do well if driven and set up properly.

I beg to differ, that's a crown I take with pride. You can be faster than me on the road, that's cool with me.

    In, out, done.

I remember the last STI that decided to give me a "race". Tailgating me until I pulled out past a van, slowed down again & he sailed past me at well over the ton.
As he pulled in he started fishtailing all over the road until it spat him out into a field barrel rolled 5 times.
Not a single panel left or pane of glass.
    Not big, or clever.
I think he was just lucky we were past the trees at the time & he had plenty of space to roll.
Walked away without a scratch too.

I'm sure if he hadn't crashed, he'd have been down the pub bragging about how he blew away someone in an S3...

Great stuff, these mapped s3's are often understated, just because there not big and brash and loud ! Great cars :)
