I understand not all Steering Wheel Control Modules can be applied to a retro cruise install. This from a previous post by amz:

There are 3 types of steering column control modules, only 2 of them support cruise control.

• Lowline
• Supported Steering Wheels: Standard Steering Wheel (4-Spoke)
• Supported Features: Trip Computer (does NOT support Cruise Control!)
• Part Numbers: 8E0-953-549-F 8E0-953-549-S
• Midline
• Supported Steering Wheels: Standard Steering Wheel (4-Spoke), Sport Steering Wheel (3-Spoke), Multi-Function Steering Wheel
• Supported Features: Trip Computer, Cruise Control
• Part Numbers: 8E0-953-549-L, 8E0-953-549-N
• Highline
• Supported Steering Wheels: Standard Steering Wheel (4-Spoke), Sport Steering Wheel (3-Spoke), Multi-Function Steering Wheel
• Supported Features: Trip Computer, Cruise Control, Steering Wheel Heating
• Part Numbers: 8E0-953-549-M, 8E0-953-549-P, 8E0-953-549-Q, 8E0-953-549-R

VCDS reports my swcm as 8E0-953-549-S though I actually have a 3-spoke wheel (and trip). I replaced the slip ring (swcm) earlier this year due a faulty steering angle sensor (G85), and it may well have come from a 4-spoke donor.

Would some part of the cars brain still be logging the original part number which I since replaced, which it thinks is still installed? Or can I be confident VCDS is displaying the correct, current part number back to me as it is queried by VCDS & reported back each time I access the controller?

Thanks for any replies. I'm up for doing cruise, but not if it means buying a new swcm.
