Hi guys, Im new to this forum so all the help you can give me would be great!

Basically Im looking at buying an s4, 98-2000 reg.

What is the max milage one I should look at? How many miles are they reliable to?

And finally what should I be paying for one?

Regards
Sam

For a well looked after one, with around 80k ish on the clock, i'd expect to pay 10k ish. According to what optional extras it has maybe a bit more, i.e. leather interior etc. If its a basic model with cloth etc, a bit less.

Obvious things to look out for are regular services, any turbo replacements, and general conditon of turbos.

Example for you. Noggy Blue 4th one down.Clicky!

Not too clued up about it though lol /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Thanks for that, that one is similar to what I am looking at.

Any opinions as to milage?

Some of you must have some advice surely?

How many miles have yours done and have you had any problems?

How many miles are the turbos good for? Etc

Cheers
Sam

Problem with the S4 is you never know the condition of the turbos.

The cars themselves are sound - assuming its been looked after - and the motors are known to be running 150k+ and the owners are still happy.

Problem is if the turbos are on their way out or fail it will cost you an arm an a leg - 4-5k as the motor has to come out to replace. That is why I was weary and ended up buying a car from a dealer with 36k on the clock.

if the car has been looked after and there is no noise from the turbos. Take it to a specialist to check out for Boost Leaks, faulty Diverter Valves and knackered MAF - if all of these check okay then you probably have a sound buy. You just need to keep ontop of the weak points - mainly the boost leaks - and you are likely to have a wonderful car for many miles regardless of the mileage you buy the car at.

Bang for buck - not much competes with an S4.

You should be able to swap the turbos for between 2 & 2.5 k, less if you only recon the broken one.

I got my Dad an S4 Avant 1998 just over two years ago. Its done nearly 147k now and still going strong. The car was a part ex at my work, so I was able to check it over properly. The comments about the turbo's I totally agree with though-sound advice. Other than that they go on forever if looked after, just make sure the previous owner didn't scrimp on the maintenance if even if its low mileage, if in doubt walk away, a decent one will turn up.
