    Hi All,

Is it possible to do a manual gearbox converstion in a 2.0tdi 140, 2005 DSG?

If it is, where and roughly how much would I be looking at?

    Cheers

Cos it's his car and he'd prefer it to be manual?

jb - I've not heard about it being done; I'm sure I read aaaaaaaages ago about NHN Nigel looking into the possibility of going from manual to DSG - I think the conclusion was that it would probably be possible, but would work out far cheaper to swap cars instead!

problem I have guys is my DSG mechatronic unit is failing on a regular basis, putting me into limp mode at least once every journey!! :( I do love the paddles though don't get me wrong..

I just can't think of a cheap way to fix it cos I can't sell the car how it is, I can't afford a new mech unit at £2100 and Audi reckon if I put a new mech unit in, there is no garuntee the gearbox would start to play up as it would be uprated technology on an older gearbox

Thought a manual conversion would be cheapest way round the problem!

    Unless anyone has another suggestion??

Get a gearbox from someone who is breaking one the same year as yours. You may find one on eBay.

What are you looking at cost wise for a new mechatronic unit?

well the only problem with second hand bits is that there is no garuntee that it would be fault free! Limp mode faults I've heard are very common around the earlier models, so I could end up spending 1500 on a used box/unit etc and end up having a similar problem or just not solve the original problem!

That's why I thought manual convertion cos the boxes are so much more simple/reliable!!

At £2100 for the manual box + fitting I would change the car. Seems the logical step to me.

How do you know it's the mechatronic unit thing? When that fails typical symptoms are the car not changing gear, not going into gear etc.

It's been into audi sevral times and that's what they've told me... it always happens in 3rd gear..the gearbox suddenly gets confused, no response from the throttle for a split second, then jerks into limp mode with RNDP flashing/locked until you turn off then on again.

I've heard it could be something like a loose connection somwhere buts Audi were pretty sure it was some kind of low speed sensor in the mech unit...

It was happening about once a month which I could deal with, but now it's doing it once a journey :(

Not a bad idea to be honest.

A manual conversion will cost more than a fixing your DSG box, if it's even possible. If you can't afford the DSG problem get shot of it while the car still runs.

Have you had a second opinion on the fault from a VAG specialist, there are a few out there that know the cars better than a main dealer. You have bear in mind that a main dealer will rarely fix any faulty parts, they just want to sell new ones.
