Thanks P, No I wont try knocking them back. As you know its a family taxi so will start looking for alloys when Xmas is over. Luckily we are all off until New Year so hes sat in a nice garage for a few weeks while we look.

Hope you have a lovely Christmas too, speak soon x

Thanks, must admit im relieved, was really panicking it was something major! Disappointed with the rims but onward and upward eh, can always get the next lot refurbed, we'll see.

Not sure what to go to tbh, moneys a factor as we have potentionally a few big spends due soon so not sure, may have to find used OEMS or reps. I still love the new shape RS6S!!!

    Well the saga continues!

Got the alloys checked, No flat spots but seems some weights had fallen off on all of them. So weights put back, wheels run true, the guy found no problems.

So driving home, still does it!!!! Again intermittently. Odd to say the least. So had a go sitting in the rear and at speeds under 40, you can hear a regular noise coming from the rear drivers wheel area. Anyway got my mechanic mate to look at it again now its pinpointed to the rear drivers side and on the ramps jacked up and put in drive and the rear drivers wheel does indeed look like its turning with a flat spot. But I know the alloys are true. Anyway, hes looked at everything in the area, eg drive shaft, bearing etc etc and everything looks good, no damage, nothing loose etc. So the only thing we can think of is the rear diff is playing up. So its going back in for a haldex oil change and a look at the diff. Have any of you had issues with the rear diff on a quattro and if so what were the symptoms?

Do you not have a set of spare wheels you could try on it?

Not sure how the rear drive is setup on the 8P but on my 8L the shaft had a bearing cage strapped to it against the drive, when the rear arm snapped (common on 8L & subject to a recall & recall also snapped) then the bearing cage disintegrated, now wonder if yours has a bearing cage/casing which maybe is slightly off as such & thus would make the shaft turn funny & even grind, speculation of course but hey exhaust every possibility before going extreme like rear diff.

Just to note of course when the car is lifted & running as such then there's no pressure on the drive is there, so maybe its not showing as much, when on the road its got all the weight on & would be more apparent imho, so worse even for the slightest of something out of whack.

thanks guys, going to try Daves spare set of RS6s tomorrow to see if it makes any difference. Hopefully they will fit, they have offset of 43 but will try to get them on.

Really getting to me and want it sorted. Its just the fact its still intermittent, although its doing it more often now. Will let you know how I get on when I try the other alloys. Thanks for help.

IIRC I run an ofset of 42, so 43 should be fine.

ok, little update. Tried the RS6s today to see if it made a difference or if it pointed to my tyres/alloys being the issue. Nope still the same so the mystery continues.

Its back in Friday, getting the Haldex oil change and get the rear diff looked at while its being done. Hopefully something will turn up looking wrong/broke!

Ok, Finally got it sorted! Phew!!!

Turns out it was the inner CV joint, totally nadgered!

Looks like at some time it had the boot changed but unfortunately there was no grease put in the joint. Was totally dry! nothing! The wear in there was unbelieavable!!! and inner part just fell apart. Anyway, new one fitted and its sorted, only downside is the passenger one will need doing soon but hey, least I know what it is now!

Want to say a big thanks for all the help, ideas and advice, esp Nige who did suggest this could be the issue. So if you ever get a sideways vibration just give the CV joints a look over! Just to bear in mind, when we tried moving the drive shaft, there was no play but if you turned the wheel slightly to a different position, there was play, so not always a straight forward diagnosis!

Now all I need are my front brake pads, uprated bushes.........lol

We're doing well for you atm girl, 1st Dave's sorted now you, unfortunately at an expense on yours but hey at least its not the diff which can paralyse some people finanically huh, glad found issue & half sorted.

Powerflex bushes, but there was a recent thread on BSH iirc bushes & the combo of engine, gearbox & dogbone gave him vibrations, so he kept stock dog & used aftermarket others, worked out ok, problem with more sturdy bushes is, it then doesnt cushion the vibes as much therefore makes your dentures rattle in the cabin.
