when you removed the old springs theres a rubber washer pretty large on the top where the adjusters go ..You cant fit the washer with the adjusters, so i would think it could be there where the metal on metal noise is coming from ?

No they can only go at the top .i meant have you dropped them low as they can go .One other thing is the noise both sides or one side?

ive set them so there is no thread showing at the bottom of the adjuster with about half an inch of thread showing on the top so im guessing about half way ish , i cant tell properly it does sound more from one side to the other ie more towards the drivers side than the passenger side but its hard to tell

How did you get an airgun on that bolt? One other thing did you screw the spring down into the bottom properly ?

i fitted the shock before the spring , i dropped the spring down to get at the bolt for the shock with the air gun , yeah as far as im aware its in the rubber seat ok i put it on the rubber seat then turned it so it went against the stop where the old spring was

When I had coilovers on my TT the rear adjuster fitted at the top of the spring located over a 'bump' on the chassis & it was tightened with little screws to stop it from moving (Im not sure if the A3 adjuster fits in the same way). When I removed part of the adjuster to get lower, it no longer fitted tightly over this 'bump' & knocked as a consequence.

Thought it was worth a mention.

ok so i had a quick look through the boxes to see if i had missed anything off and ive found two plastic caps that go on top of the shock could this be the reason for the knocking , im going to check all the bolts and nuts by hand today as air tools can never be guaranteed can they so will try and turn them all another half a turn or so to see if any of them turn at all

yeah there is a bump in the chassis but no screws to hold it in place just the spring holds it on , i even cut the old rubber top mount for the spring and put it back on to see if that made a difference but it was exactly the same

Is there ANY movement in the adjuster and the 'bump' where it locates? Literally the smallest gap will allow the spring to rattle the adjuster against that bump. It produced a much louder knocking noise than I would have thought.

I solved it by wrapping some insulating tape around the bump to make sure the adjuster was a real tight fit.

yeah i think there is movement there does it make a differnce that i put the rubber mounts back on as there is prob more movement now isnt there as they are sitting another couple of mm further down ?

Yes. If its the same as the TT putting those rubber bits back in the top will push the adjuster down & further away from the bump & increase the amount of gap for it to rattle! It needs to fit snug so it doesnt move ;)

ah right i get you i'll take them back out and get some tape on them to see if that makes any difference , any tape /gaffer tape as its more sticky or like you say insulation tape

Something hard wearing as the movement will eventually wear the tape through. I think I used insulating, but duck might be better/ tougher.

Strange that they dont fit snug though TBH if they are the correct fitment for the car. Mine only rattled as I removed half of the adjuster for extra lows, so I wasnt running the threaded part that fits nice and tight over the bump :)

still banging mate put some gaffer tape round it still no avail all the bolts are tight , its better but still making a noise the only thing i can think of now is the plastic caps ontop of the shocks failing that its bad parts as i'll be out of ideas what to check

It's more likely the top mounts. Seems to be a common thing for coilovers to have thinner shafts than the OEM shocks so that the spacers and washers that reside on top of the shock don't sit correctly.
