    Situation,

Driving up quite a steep'ish hill when the car popped out of 2nd gear and started bellowing out brown smoke. Managed to get it to the top of the hill and pulled over. After re-starting the car it would only drive about 15 mph due to kangaroo'ing. there is a low dronning vibration noise from right hand side of the engine when rev'd otherwise it sounds and starts ok.

Any ideas what it could be?

    Hi mate,

Have you checked all the boost pipes?? I have had one come off and the results were similar, sounded rough and would not drive at very far at all, I thought it was the clutch or turbo at first, but for once it turned out to be a smaller bill than I had expected!

Top marks Chris! Your absolutely right!

Just been out to check and the hose had completely come away. The inner metal tube looks a bit worn so think it needs a new one.

    Thanks Chris your a star.

No worries mate, I had mine fixed by my specialist, when I realised how fairly straight forward it was I could have quite easily done it myself, but was happy to pay as it was a lot cheaper than a new clutch/turbo! From memory a new boost pipe was approx £30, I cant quite remember how much I was charged for the parts.

I rememer having exactly this on my old Mk4 golf GT TDi. Every time you put your foot down it sounded like there was sand swooshing about in the engine & the smoke was unbelievable.

Cr*pped myself fearing the worst as I drove to the local VW garage, who fixed the pipe back on for £20! About the only time a car fix has worked out cheaper than it sounded.
