Jardo's 'Journey to quattro' - My Story...

car looks great.
price for spec is cheap.
markets slow for used cars like this from what i see.
dont lower the price it will go.
how long you been advertising it for?

Almost can't be bothered to sell it now.

Everybody keeps offering me peanuts for it, and it's a good car and I love driving it. I might as well just keep it and save for a Porsche then sell it down the line for whatever the market is. The car owes me so much I can't even consider selling it cheap and fast.

So it's having a mega epic clean today.

I haven't washed it for about three weeks. Last time was with Prawn before Goodwood. It's filthy!

I've got a set of 595's that I stupidly ordered in the wrong size, so I'm debating buying some wider wheels for them cheap somewhere and having a set of track wheels. Rather than selling the 595's on for a loss.

to be fair mate your car looks like a bargain to me.
not a sellers market though. cars and car parts are really not shifting at the moment.
shame.
keep it and get your use from the bits you have spent out on and sell later on.
you could keep the ads going on the free sites while you wait.

This, really was one of the most bizzare decisions you've ever made.

Why on earth you'd order completely the wrong size tyres for your car astounds me. You may as well have ordered 15'' tyres for all the hope you've got of fitting them!

Good luck with it all

Going to stick my neck out here
Due to current financial commitments (new discovery and a trip to Egypt ) I would love your car but can't afford it although I agree £4500 is fair !
Given that it has everything I'd want from an S3 apart from it's not black I would love it :)
SO
if you decide to keep it for a bit (at least 6 months ) pm me when your ready and I'll give it a loving new home however DO NOT. Get rid of the S4's as there the icing on the proverbial cake :D
I'm not messing so when the times right let me know :D

LOL, basically I ordered some massive 255 595RSR's because they were on a monster deal.

I know. Say no more.

Well Basil let's see what happens, lovely lady is in Australia until the start of Feb. When she gets back we need to find a new house, so the S may have to go then depending on how much saving happens between now and then.

I've got the sprint day coming up, so I plan on taking it easy on the car and just settling into it easily. And then carry on driving it.

I seem to be amassing a reasonable pile up service consumables, replacement parts and little upgrades. I don't even realise I'm doing it haha.

And if you look closely at this excellent picture; you can quite clearly see me getting sheepishly black flagged.
Bravo.

id rather pay 4500 for a good car seeing all the new bits on it and including the mods on it. if you buy a cheap one fairly oem for around 3k it wont take a lot of modding to hit the 4500. plus the hassle etc
but like anything its all down to your own situation and opinion i guess?

On the face of it, yeah I guess so.

But.

You aren't going to get a decent, reliable, facelift S3 with full history for less than 3k.

You're going to buy that £3000 S3, and follow it up with...

A remap at £350 to stop it being boring.

A set of wheels at £500.

Even a cheap set of coilovers is going to set you back £300.

That's just the most basic run down of what every new buyer is going to do when they buy an S3.

Or for £4500 you can buy my car which has...

A new clutch at £300.

A £1200 set of coilovers.

A £500 set of wheels.

A £500 set of brakes.

A £300 exhaust.

A £200 front mount.

£300 worth of poly bushes.

£500 worth of hoses, downpipe, B5 tip.

£300 AEM meth injection.

SS R32 roll bars.

034 subframe mounts.

Uprated engine mounts.

Diesel geek.

Relentless.

Yadaa yarda yardaaa.

Blah blah blah.

If you're thinking of buying a modified S3 you'd be mental not to buy mine, I could break it for £4500 in a heart beat. But it's too good a car for that.

3k would be stupid yeh.
when you've modified cars its hard to accept that modifications add no value at all too, that's what a buyer, unless theyre young and stupid, will be thinking so you gotta keep that in mind.

Sorry Karl, but we all know a car's worth what a person is willing to pay, so your analysis that this is a 3K car maybe hard for you to accept, but there's no reason to tell everyone this IS a £3k car.

It's worth £2.5k Tops! :p

As an independent balance to this debate , I would love to buy jardos car all be it in about 6 months :(
I AM going to replace my 1.8t sport with an S3 next year and when I do I want it to have S4 avus wheels , a B5 tip , fmic , remap , coilovers , exhaust and a FSH .
This has all of that and more which has been documented here ! Not some bloke on eBay claiming it's all been done !
Now realistically a reasonable example is going to be £3000 as I don't want a £1500 snot box .
I have no desire to build a BT willy extension ;) , I just want a decent well spec'd daily that's modified to a sensible level and if I buy a standard car I'll have to spend out on making it what I want it to be ! If this car wasn't exactly what I wanted an S3 to be the NO I personally don't think it would be worth that much but to me it is :)
Let's see how patient jardo can be :D pmsl

ha ha ha TBF karl , i'd love to go BT, HOWEVER it seems to me that all BT builds are shall we say unreliable ;)
im sure 4 million posters will pop up now to tell me theres is still going strong yada yada yada :)
290 in a small 4wd hatch is plenty for me :)

Karl this is one of the most legendary quotes ever, ROFL!

Jardo, just enjoy the car mate. It will sell when it sells . I put my s3 up for sale last year and got no interest for 3 weeks then one guy phoned , turned up, bought it there and then and for days after the phone wouldn't stop ringing about the damn thing.

It's holiday season after all , a lot of people are away. Just keep it clean and ready incase someone does want to view. ;-)

I'm loving it at the moment, it's awesome.

I know it's worth the money, and in 6 months time it's still going to be a great car.

I've got next weekends sprint day, a new set of tires to put on it, ordered a revised DV piston, all sorts going on :)

A reasonable week in the world of S3 ownership!

I found an S3 friend in the work car park.

I guess we are due an update after yesterday!

Saturday night we all bundled to Prawns and his lovely lady ****** a roast dinner, we drank alcohol free beer and watched Aussie V8 racing in the wet.

Up at 5 and on the road to Curby, 2 hours 40 mins to get there.

10678425_1536897916525384_7940830638657720940_n.jpg

I like it when Team Prawn Racing hits the road in convoy, it's a nice feeling rolling along in two badass 8L's.

I took a picture to show my excitement.

10632742_1536897899858719_1122960068498066936_n.jpg

We arrived just after gates opening at 8:15, popped up the tent and dropped George Michael off then went to the Shell station for some bang bang juice.

Morning briefing done, Prawn and I jumped straight to the front of the line up.

The way Curby works you tend to stay in the same order all day, so for hours Prawn and I were going back to back. This wasn't enjoyable because we never got to see each other.

10614308_1536897779858731_2815001747795442996_n.jpg

We did spend a lot of time pushing each other's cars though.

This type of event is very odd because it is almost totally anonymous.

There are people who are clearly fast, because their car and general style dictates that they must be. But because there is no timing, and nobody really knows how you're doing it's all a mystery until lunch time.

So I didn't have a clue if I was **** of not.

Looking back retrospectively at the times I was averaging in the mid 30 second range, consistently doing anywhere between 30.3 and 30.7 seconds.

I took Prawn out for a lap, which was my penultimate before I went for lunch,

He showed me some places where I was losing lots of time, so I went out for my last morning lap and ran a little wider, braked a little earlier in places to get a better entry line and later in places to take a late apex.

I felt happy with my times, things were smooth.

Lunch came and we ran up to the timing van to see what we had clocked.

I was astounded to see I was within half a second of third place, which happened to be a 300bhp turbo'd 16v Mk2, which is a hugely spec'd well seasoned endurance race car with a much more experienced driver who has done the Curby track quite a bit in the past. Which was most certainly running on form, because he was very close to chasing the tails of the local hero Gurds in his mental Mk1 race car.

We were clearly both having a fantastic day.

I know it's not about who you beat, but beating yourself. However I was really pleased to see I could compete with such a fantastic car and driver, AND improve on my lap times and get below the 30 second mark. A really encouraging thought :) Now I just had to work on being as tidy as the Mk2 ahead of me, and keeping my driving smooooth like his.

Unfortunately Sparrow in the Mk2 ran into some quite terminal suspension issues shortly after the second session started which was a real shame, I believe it's all in hand mind you and is already on the road to being sorted.

I did get some videos in the afternoon sessions which will hopefully give people an idea of what this kind of event is.

The circuit is a B shape in mirror. But the upright of the B has a short tail coming off the end of it you join and exit.

There is a timing light about a third down the straight, so you do an in-lap to warm up then fly through the light gate and do a flying lap then exit.

curborough_fb_front.png

Here my laps -

And filmed in the car -

So at the end of the day, I went home a winner.

Because I drove 150 miles there, thrashed the car all day, went sub 30 seconds, improved on my times, met some fantastic people and drove 150 miles home without having to do anything other than push the DV vac hose back on and check the oil.

£45 for the day, £60 in fuel.

£105 for a full days racing. Unbeatable.

In terms of sheer times I was the fastest of the ASN group, and finished with a high 29 second time.

Prawn did a lap in Daz's car which took my 4th place. And an S4 on slicks which wasn't really part of the day turned up and put in some spanking laps which were faster than mine. But I'm not counting him because he wasn't on the original list, and 5th isn't as good as 4th :p

Plans moving forward.

Don't sell it.

The car needs more grip, I was the fastest entrant on road tires. Worn out ones at that.

So I need to get on it with some NS2R's or the like as get my 595's sold.

I need more support in the car, buckets are a must if I'm upping the grip. I almost couldn't hold on to the wheel enough to stay in the seat.

The brakes aren't good enough for repetitive stops and more aggressive work than road. So a pad upgrade needs to happen.

And I need to realign and set up the suspension to suit the lighter car now it is partially stripped.

Happy days, thanks to Prawn Jojo and Daz for such great company.

Roll on Donnington next month :)

You did well chap. For a first time there you seemed to get on with it pretty well :)

There are definite improvements to be made, and more time to be found without car changes, but that's half the fun of it. You get to come back in May next year and try again!

Well played sir :racer:

I know the times were only produced so you could see how changes to your car and driving style made you faster /slower. so it wasn't really a competition but I think I was the fastest of the ASN crowd on a 29.75. Your best was I think 29.87.
DAZ-20VT did a 29.28 lap but that was when Nick was at the wheel.
I took some photo's of the time sheets for comparison purposes only of course.
I also had road tyres on my diesel estate, the front nearside one not quite as good as it was at the start of the day.
I think if I have another go at this I will invest in some track day tyres, I have a spare set of 18 inch wheels that the BTCC slicks would fit on just fine. Unfortunately I don't think they would be allowed in this kind of event so some 888 or other such similar tyre.

both jealous im a race driver!!!

:whistle2:

so karl you were 8th with a 29.75
and jardo was 5th with a 29.87

lol one of you must be wrong!!

both you guys looked quick out there either way.
be interesting next time for sure!!
glad you're keeping the journey to quattro alive btw!!!

I believe old J-Drizzle's best runs were in the morning, like mine.

I think when we looked at lunch time he had a few in the 29.4x bracket.

Interesting to see how the times develop over the course of the day, with weather and conditions changing.

Typically, it seemed that times improved over the morning, with cool crisp air suiting the forced induction cars, and peoples track knowledge building. Then as the afternoon went on times all seemed to be a few tenths down. Many people also suffering from elevated tyre pressures due to the heat and repeated runs.

I know my best run of all was soon before lunch, and my closest afternoon run was 0.09s slower.

Not a competition as you say, but it's really interesting to compare trends in times and see how they change / evolve over the course of the day! Even when only comparing yourself to your previous self!

I didn't really look at all pages off the timing sheets in the afternoon but I know you took pictures of them so you'll have the information to hand obviously.

Hugely impressive times from you, I was very impressed and the car seemed to be going really well! For such a big car I was pretty astonished.

From watching you I could really see your tires were really doing their work, I would love to see what you could have done with some more appropriate tires.

Regardless of timings it was such a great day, and as I say we all went home in one piece without a single breakdown. Huge thumbs up all round :)

It's probably my mistake , I was only looking at what appeared to be the collated times .And as you say it's really interesting to see how they changed throughout the day with the increase in track temperature and the learning process of how to drive on a track.
The first couple of my runs I left the ESP on and I knew this would always be slower as the car just keeps taking the throttle away when it gets a bit upset, But for my first time on a track in a car better to build up the speed I thought.
when I turned it off it became more interesting and quicker, When I let the tyre pressures down it became much better, 44PSI in the fronts was a tad too high.
I had been contemplating changing the shockers and will definately do this now. The car is an SE spec with standard 90K mile 6 year old shockers and 30mm Eibach springs, The shortcomings of this became apparent on the track as it does occasionally on the road, so I am looking at some Bilstein B8's which seem to be the shocker of choice and will definitely be sporting some more sensible tyres if I do any track days again.
Trying to compare timings to other people is almost meaningless as you just aren't comparing apples with apples but I am a competitive soul. I now see this as an opportunity to improve the car and my skills as a driver which is a good thing, I hope.
Now how far is it to the Nurburgring :think:.

Karl.

I hope you guys realise it's only US that's looking into the times! over on ClubGTI who host the event, no times are allowed to be posted up on the forum, not even from the event organisers. But they will post the times, via email, to the participants.
