Jardo's 'Journey to quattro' - My Story...

Wow, fixed my car.

Excuse the fact this video is me addressing Prawn, it's a whatsapp video meant for him. It does display that my car is awesome though.

Done some data logs, which show the MAF maxed out by 4K and maintaining over 188gps (it can't physically read any higher) until 6700rpm. It's making 26PSI and holding it from 3 through to 5500RPM and holding 22+psi until red line/7200RPM.

All these figures people will be saying are not physically possible for a KO3s, so **** knows how it is doing it. But it is!

Oh, and that video was taken a min' ago on a dry(ish) A38.

Surely if your MAF's maxed out by 4k the fuellings going to be miles out from then on?!

Maybe its not a K03S? Some sort of hybrid?

Get yer **** down to Bill's on Sunday for a run on the dyno... he will be logging AFR, Boost and everything else too...

<tuffty/>

Not sure, but I've never seen a KO3s as aggressive as this one.

And yes Paul, if I can get the day off work I am in :) Or do you mean THIS Sunday?

How have I missed this thread???

car is awesome mate, like the progress you have made. car looks like it shifts!!

have you got any track days planned? whats next performance wise on your a3?

Well I did ADI at Castle the other week, and now the bug is bitten. I was supposed to be doing a track day at Hullovington with Prawn next month but I am going to skip that and put the money towards LCR brakes.

She'll be having all the major work done to her now, the annoying thing about my car is that I could not make it go faster without spending £1500+. My check list for the next 4 months is;

Get a pimp set of daily/road wheels
LCR Brembos (and obviously new discs and pads)
Rear discs and pads and bleed with 5.1 fluid
She needs an oil change too
And if a set of cheap LCR hubs come up then I'll have them too

Should have that done by the end of January.

Then the plan is start on a hybrid, I'll probably end up getting Bill to build me a KO3s hybrid but in the mean time I will be collecting the 3" maf and injectors.

I plan on having the hybrid on by April next year but we all know this will never happen. Another thing which will never happen is an LSD, I would love it to happen but to be honest I probably won't be *****.

Then I want it proper GT spec, semi stripped with a set of piiiimp buckets (Recaro Pole Position style) a decent wheel and some gangster harnesses.

Then, dare I say it she'll be done! And if I've got all of that done by this time next year I will be very happy.

Oh, there are some changes to be made to this thread as well so I can be a photo ho' and keep it all in one place. I'll just throw things here now instead of all over the forum in separate threads.

Pictures from ADI -

Not sure what the white bits are?

Since ADI I've had a couple of issues, random boost leaks, misfires, mixture adaption fault codes etc. I thought having the inlet off and checking everything on that side would be a good start. So after a Whatsapp to Prawn asking how hard it was I have it a go!

The injector seats were a bit grubby, nothing a bit of satin black paint wouldn't fix!

I've done some running about and basically I couldn't find a boost leak. But I knew there was some sort of strange tapping noise on start up and a rough idle. There was a strange "screaming babies" noise on FULL boost too.

Couldn't be bothered chasing it so I just lived with it. Turns out the screaming babies noise is more than likely a bit of exhaust gasket making itself friendly with the inside of my turbo. But ho hum, I'm not taking the turbo off and it's still making 26PSI.

The other day it got really bad so I got a new gasket from Audi and dropped the turbo down and replaced him at the side of the road.

There's my boost leak, rough idle and general gayness all in one.

Replaced him and the result is the epic boost I now have and the car running well. The downside is my average of 19.8MPG over the last 120miles lol!

So there we go, all up to date and thats my car :)

The tubular manifolds aren't very good, my THS Hi-Flow Cast Manifold is about as good as you can get as far as I know.

Even standard the flow on a KO3 manifold is exceptionally good :)

sounds good mate, what power would you make on a hybrid? whatever it is, it will be ****** rapid and lethal on a track! brembos sound good aswell, supposed to be much better than the 312mm. not sure where your from but there is a trackday in abingdon beginning of this month and next month, would be good to see your car go. was it a hare job, spraying the inlet manifold?wanted to clean my injectors aswell. as my engine is AUM it usually throws a code when removing the throttle body.would I be able to drive it one cleaned to get it re-aligned at my mates?

Paradox, if you're anywhere near me, I'll happily clean your injectors, TB, and realign it all in VAG com. I'm in Basingstoke.

Jardos car should be quick around the track, but in reality, even with semi slicks it struggles to get it's power down early enough on the open diff. it's got to be totally straight before you can plant it, which just wastes SO much time :(

I wouldn't bother with a hybrid yet J-rod, try and make some use of the power you already have. Surely my track car has proved that power isn't needed for a quick car....

Word, hence why the LCR hubs have crept onto my list. There is no reason why bar the cage and seats my car can't be your car by January. Whats left to do?

Like I said Bob, you need to let me have a go in yours to make my mind up. I can't believe I've gone from driving your car pretty much two or three times a week to it now being awesome and me NOT being able to play in it! :p

thanks prawn,I'm in bucks do not too far from you at all.
drop me a pm with your number and we'll arrange it.

what's the difference between standard agu/aum hubs and van hubs?

I stripped my car out a few weeks ago as u was planning to go Santa pod (before my coilover broke) and it did make a big difference so I can only image what your car would be like. I agree with your point about getting the best out of the current setup. once the custom fmic is on I should be more than ready for the track.no cage though as it my daily lol

Not a chance man.

Forgive my rudeness here J, but as I said last night, you've obviously forgotten about the ~£5000 and many HUNDREDS of man hours that represent the difference between where my car was 1 year ago (exactly the same as yours) and where it is today.

Just a few of the more notable things perhaps:

LSD + full gearbox rebuild - £1000
Front brakes with DECENT discs and DS3000 pads, £950
Proper tyres, £540
Epic 32mm adj Neuspeed rear ARB, £260
LCR hubs and wishbones, droplinks, going rate is £300 from a breaker
Uprated lcr front arb - £200 (adj eibach from DPM)
Thermostat + oil cooler setup, £140

That's £3500 right there, and they're ALL performance things you're talking about, nothing safety related at all.

Throw in £500 for the seats and some good 6pt harnesses, and £1000 for the cage, and there's your £5k, without even considering things like the steering wheel and boss, the fire extinguisher, helmet nets, and all that other stuff.

I certainly wouldn't feel safe driving a car that capable without all the safety gear.

Your car is awesome man, you know that, as a road car it's the ********. Just don't under estimate the amount of work required to turn it into a track car. it's HUGE.

Paradox: Difference with the LCR hubs and wishbones is geometry, the LCR wishbones are cast, not pressed steel, and they're slightly longer, and more forward set, they also have slotted holes on the ball joint plate for camber adjustment. This lets you run more camber, and more castor, which makes a massive difference to the handling. To quantify it, a standard LCR with no rear arb, drives like an A3 WITH a rear ARB, simply due to the improved front end geo.

As the for hubs, the LCR hubs have an element of roll centre correction compared to the A3 hubs, the lower section between the wheel hub and the ball joint is considerably longer, so it brings the wishbone down, making it flatter. rather than pointing up like an A3 wishbone does on a lowered car.

The track control arms on the LCR setup also mount under the hubs steering arm, again flattening them out, and reducing bump steer which is pretty apparent in a lowered A3.

J-rod: take your time dude, I'd sort the handling and brakes first if I were you, as it'll make more use of the power once the chassis is sorted. Then get an LSD so you can get the remaining power onto the ground, then, if you're still serious about track use, start looking at all the safety gear.

I know its a lot of work, I need to get a spin in yours to see if its what I want.

Not sure I want to go as far as you have, I still want it to be driven daily

I've found some lcr guna and track rods if any is interested. going for 120 not sure is that's a good or bad price

HTC isn't all that good.yeah that is lcr hubs. have. look on ebay, black lcr breaking

Nice to see you've got the problems sorted, and seeing your photos makes me miss living in Plymouth. Arnt the LCR hubs and wishbones the same as the S3/TT quattro ones, if so can these be used aswell?

haha, don't speak too soon. it's broken again!

And to be honest, I find it quite funny. I'm sick of telling him to turn the boost down, and I get ignored. so I'm glad it's broken.

LCR wishbones are indeed the same as TTQ / S3 ones, although the LCR ones reportedly have harder bushes, like everything else on the LCR

Even broken it'd still be quicker than yours in a straight line! :p

Right, home tonight to start on my shopping list :)

I may have sounded a bit harsh earlier, but it does get tiring when I tell him every day that it'll blow up if he keeps running at 26psi, then just minutes later I get boasting text messages about how awesome 26psi is, then 2 days later moaning about how it's broken again.

I think he's turned it down again this evening, so hopefully the ear bashing should stop

I'm sure he doesn't take it to heart but then again you would say it for no reason.hopefully it all gets sorted

trust me, look at my hateful dying ko3S that's full of cracks.....

that's what constant abuse at 22psi did to it..... 26psi CAN'T last long at all. Nick at Rtech said when it was mapped that it was over boosting, and that it needed an MBC to cap the boost. you've gotta listen to him dude.

CTFO foo! It's turned down now, and fingers crossed it will give me more reliability.

New goal for my car being awesome, March 20th! :D

Just did a 0 to 100 time of 12/top end of 11 seconds. :o.k:

Not bad for £30 a corner budgets and a car with a full leather interior.

yea, they'll be fine for Jarrod, he can't drive properly, so doesn't reach enough speed on the straights to need brakes!

Brakes are only applied coming into the paddock at the end of a session :)
