Jardo's 'Journey to quattro' - My Story...

Hayes, is the "surprised you didn't go for a facelift" comment meant to be a joke?! :lmfao:

no

Maywell beat most stage 1 s3's for hooning it round and mcdonalds carpark appeal, but as an overall package, it lacks compared to s3's :beee:

still though, a good buy and most definately an upgrade from the delorean look-a-like you had.

I do agree totally Hayes, it'd be nice to have a car that I could also use as an anchor for a type 23. :icon_thumright:

You know me, the most un-halfords carpark person in the world. Now it's got the full leather and some bigger profile tires it drives very well, nice and smooth. I hate facelift cars, I would never own a facelift A3. If Prawn offered to swap his new car for mine I'd say no without even thinking about it. The MASSIVE appeal for this one is it's so early, the fonts on the dials are different to 99% of other A3's, it has a few odd switches which are specific to him as well.

Some inspiration for you Danny, it's got the same wheels as yours now!

ha ha looks good, you can’t beat the TSport 16's lol I am very inspired now :).

I noticed in the pictures you posted there were a change of wheels, what wheels are you planning on putting on or are you sticking with these, I have some S3 wheels for mine but need two of them need new tyres, I am going on the belief that if you put S3 badges on an A3 it makes it 225bhp, so if I put S3 wheels on my A3 it will make it a quattro :)

You're on the right lines, badging an A3 as an S3 does give it more power. But it makes you look like a c*** so it's a bit of a trade off.

And yes, S3 wheels on an A3 will make it a quattro so I'd do it!

It's had three sets of wheels this weekend, the Pro Race 1.2's aren't mine, the LCR wheels with Pirelli P Zero Corsa R's were given to me by Prawn on a bit of a deal and the T Sport wheels are my girlfriends. I don't actually OWN a set of wheels haha! I will be refurbishing and and running the LCR wheels as track tires, and will buy a set of BBS LM reps once I get a new job and some financial stability again. Going from £200+ a corner Corsa R's to "Everest" £30 a pop budgets is so scary!

Fingers crossed the sun comes out and it gets a bit brighter this afternoon so I can give it a clean!

ye the C***/power trade off is something ill stay away from, i did reed a thread about a month ago about red T is quicker than silver T so i might look into one of those badges then lol.

LM reps are a good choice although telling people you don’t own a set of wheels is like telling us you don’t own a pair of shoes lol

HA Ha I bet the swap from 200 to 30 is scary, but money is sight this month so if i want the S3's for the track ill have to shop around.

Hopefully you will get a job and the BBS's will be yours

Fingers crossed indeed!

Just went out for a drive with my friend who owned the car originally, I think he's got some photo's of it looking at its best!

Was good to have him back in it again, basically the only two people in the world who would have bought this car are me and him!

LOL

I have a set of the standard s3 wheels jardo, I think one needs a refurb.

Alternatively if you wait until next year when I can afford a b7 s4... Or an Elise il sell you my s4 reps lol

Put my name on the S4 reps, how much are the S3 wheels? Any tires?

2 are illegal/racing slicks and other 2 tyres are ok but cheapys. They have vw centre caps for some reason and one is a different colour to the others lol. I was thinking about spraying them black and getting some winter tyres to stop the reps being battered... But seriously cannot be *****. You can have em for £80 if you want to come get them

If you can take a picture of them, I'l be VERY tempted.

And seriously, first refusal on the S4 reps ok?

Any wheels you sell to Jardo, make sure the centre caps have already been removed ;)

Yeah il get them out this week, would be nice to clear up some space.

Yeah will defo bare you in mind, although won't be for a while.

Wow, having spent a f**k load on the car (yet not fitting most of it haha!) yesterday I now have NO boost issues, no missfire and pretty much the most aggressive and strongest boost you will EVER see from a KO3s. Did some data logs yesterday and I'm getting the full 189GPS, the MAF can only physically read 187GPS the other 2GPS is a correction for atmospheric pressure, basically my MAF is maxed out!

Bought some LCR top mounts and bearing, ordered an 80mm Jetex ready for hybrid time and the appropriate adaptors and reducers for the intake. Had to get Forge so they matched the other hoses haha!

Clayed the car, which I was very happy with (first time using clay really) and then Intensive Shine polished and sealed it with Colinite and rain x'd everything and all that jazz.

Looking good now its clean mate :)

Impressive boost and pull, i need to get myself one of those KO3's's lol,
Like you say you just need to get you Jetex cone fitted now for extra BHP's

Looking much better there now mate, helps the car breath, i bet you can here your DV loads now, mine makes a nice Tsssssssh since fitting this

You planning on a cold air feed???

I do like a nice filter

Because I've got a front mount I don't need it quite as bad, it'd be useful to have something plumbed in there but to be honest I doubt there is anything to be had in performance gains just yet, when the hybrid goes on I'll look into it though.

also where did you stick your spark plug amp??? as you can see mine is currently cabled up but i cant see yours?

I just left it dangling, haven't got any zip ties or anything so I can't do anything just yet. To be honest, I haven't even got a clue why they are plugged into the air box?!

perhaps the heat sink on the back of it is a good clue J-rod.....

they get hot, the heat sink is mounted in the airbox, because it's guaranteed a fast airflow across it, to help keep the amp cool.

Ahhhh, fair enough. I just ripped it out in a rush before dropping Lou down the pub!

It'll be alright just dangling won't it?

Tried to get to the bottom of my "screaming babies" sound today and I'm pretty sure I've found the problem haha!

So now I've got the 80mm filter set properly.

Picked these up from Audi, for free because the guy who served me was ****ing useless on the phone. However he was sound as you like and let me just rife through the parts department and warehouse looking for the right bits haha!

Cleaned out the catch can, if you've ever done this you will know what it looks like. If you haven't got a PCV delete, do you fancy this going into your engine?

I wasn't happy with the position of the catch can, I say position it was just hanging by the hoses behind the fans.

So I bodged a little bracket -

Good progress there mate, shame about the manifold though, do you think the bolts just vibrated off???

Exhaust mani bolts are the bain of my life. Make sure you get some decent washers to keep them buggers in tight.

I have got some of the ovalised ones, which destroy themselves and the thread as you do them up. I don't have much intention of taking the manifold off anytime soon...I hope!

Did some logs this afternoon/evening, and I've only got 155.9GPS airflow, which is confusing because the other week it was quicker than Prawns which flows more and is lighter. I had a reading of 189GPS on the Torque app on my phone only a few days ago (and it ISNT any slower).

Bizarrely we have been out in my girlfriends A3 all weekend and I kept thinking "**** me this is quicker than mine!" but I got in it today and I wasn't sure.

It's making big boost (24PSI+) at the vacuum gauge and is telling me it holds it's boost but for some reason it isn't flowing the air. I can't see the manifold being loose being the only thing, because it's still making the boost. Any suggestions?

Eurgh, what a day!

Fitted a manual boost control valve the other day, and had it limited down to 18psi but it didn't feel any slower than at 24psi. And on full boost it was fluctuating between 18 and about 15psi and I could hear a "psst psst psst" which was consistent with the boost dropping. So I ran around checking for boost leaks and found this -

2011-10-02151247.jpg

Lots of oily gayness around the cold side of the intercooler! Changed the clip and cleaned it up, altered the boost gauge to give me roughly 22psi and it feels a lot better, much smoother but still not super quick.

I got a good 4 or 5 turns off every clamp on the inlet routing too.

Gave it a good clean and took a couple of photos, but not much change at all.

Cars fixed and going like f***! Pulling properly hard, and making perfect boost. Best it's ever been!

My dad being the total legend he is managed to remove the one broken manifold stud that was in the head without taking the head off, and the one that was snapped out of the head. He then replaced two turbo studs and helped me fit the downpipe and decat.

The way he did it was using a right angle air drill with a 2.5mm left handed drill bit, the mild steel bolts took over 3 hours just to drill one! He snapped the tips off one left handed bit so he made a tiny hollow plug which he could run a drill bit through which sat within the manifold face, ensuring the drilling could only be central to the stud. He then spent an hour tapping a dowel into the hole, and then another 2 hours gently working the stud out using a tiiiiiny torque wrench set to 15nm so as not to snap the dowel.

EVERY person who saw the snapped bolt quoted £500+ head off only to fix it, I know we all think our dads are the best but I truly think there isnt another person in the world who could have done this so well!

haha, that's 4 days away, as if it'll still be working by then!

Had a drive of this at 6am this morning before work, I can't lie, it is very quick. Finally pulling like it should thanks to the legendary work of GT Jonny (the one thumb magician)

Nice one J-rod, good to see you as well :)

Good work mate, i bet this goes like STINK at combe :)

What Prawn said, I've had my one day a month that it's going to work and thats that. I'm fully expecting the next 30 days of use to be ridden with misfires, boost leaks and screaming turbo's. :p

On the plus side, glad you like it Bob. I couldn't believe you hadn't driven it all done up, but why would you need to when it IS your car haha!

yea man, it feels exactly like mine did back when mine had the power it should do!

Felt great :) you must be chuffed to bits

Nice work, what size is that downpipe 2.5" or 3" with cat or decat?

I'm happy with it Pdogs, just need to sort the final few bits out.

The pipe is a 3" mild stainless downpipe which than has a 3" stainless decat and shrinks to 2.5" then joins to a full hand made stainless 2.5" from the cat back. The only silencer box is the rear back box, so it flows very fast and likes to pop and lick flames quite a lot!
