Car: Audi A4 B5 TDI Auto Avant 98
    Engine: 1.9 TDI AFN
    Gearbox: 4 speed auto DMX

Got in the car this morning, put it in to drive and pulled away.
It was slow and felt like it was lacking power.
At first I thought I've lost boost again but bit further up the road it started to pick up and accelerated fine with out any issues.

3 more miles in to my trip to work and I've worked out that the box is not dropping down in to first.
It seems to sit in 2nd. If I manually pick 1st there is a bit of a jerk and I pull away properly, nice and strong no extra revs needed.

Bit more playing about it and its definitely not dropping in to 1st when I stop.

I can drive the car but every time I'm going to pull away I got to drop it in to first manually.
No ideal but it will have to do for now.

Possibly just pure coincidence but might worth mentioning.
Last night was a doing a full scan and error clear with VCDS. It did the first scan, then a clear and half way through the rescan the laptop turned it self off. No sure if this is anything to do with my current issue or not.
I will charge the laptop up, I might even run the extension lead out to the car and do another scan and see if anything is displayed. I'll also check the message blocks on the box and see if it helps identify what's going on.

Has any one got any idea?
I wonder if this is the end of my box :(

Yup 5 speed but then I would need new shifter, TCU to go with the box.

    No idea what they got.
I don't know much about these boxes.

hmmm ive got a 5 speed box sitting? ive also got a good dual mass and clutch.. saying that if I was converting one from auto to manual I would be tempted to go down the solid flywheel road..

on a serious note though Scott ive never really dealt much with auto boxes and ive picked up a few E30's with auto box problems and ive ripped it out and stuck in an extra peddle. it was the cheaper option..

My mate Malcolm he has a lovely 325i cabby which had an auto problem but he was wanting to keep it original he went to a gear box specialist and they advised him to source a replacement as it would cost more than the cars worth to repair the box. ( that went against the grain when he asked me to refit an auto box )

has you're box got any electrical switches on it? IE sport mode, economy mode?
sometimes you could be lucky and it could be the ecu playing up. other times a fluid change might help any further and it leads in to big money.
that's when you're either trying to get a good auto box or fitting an extra peddle.

is the passat shifter the same? would a passat peddle box work? you any ideas on this? I might be breaking a TDi passat soon but its not a definite as it might get saved. I do have a good 5 speed box sitting still with shifter attached from a TDi passat.

I wont ever convert this car to a manual. I like the Auto to much.

When I said 5 speed, I mean 5 speed auto.

The gear box was serviced about year or so ago.
It might be worth doing it again cause Its not that much but then its £100ish I can put towards another box if this one fails.

If I need to replace the box I would like to fix a 5 speed auto but I think fitting the wires, plugs, TCU and select might be a little bit to much money and time on a car that I need daily?

could be worth checking the level Scott there could be a leak. you never know.

we had an old m535 that used to loose ATF it would do it over time and no one could find the leak as it never left any drips.
turned out it was only leaking when under load and was from one of the pipes running to the oil cooler

Don't you have to remove some bolt on the box and the oil level should be just under the bolt line?

    No idea.
My regular garage recommend a transmission specialist near me. So I went there.

BMWs had that and it was brilliant.
Its all this sealed for life ****.

My plan of action is to get home and scan it with VCDS, see what that says about the box and check the oil some how. Its not something I can do in my parking space.
If that all appears fine, no codes and I still got the issue. I'll take the car to a transmission place next week (I'm on holiday) and see what they say.
If its a new box situation then I think I'm going to look at a refurbished unit or getting mine refurbished. all depending on costs.
I'm not massively keen on buying a second hand unit just in cause it lasts 6 months and I'm back where I am now.

yea the older BMW's had them but even there newer stuff is starting this sealed for life ****..

I converted a boys 740 to manual a few years back as the auto box was playing up.
that was box related as it would be fine for the first 50 miles or so then would start playing up. I managed to change the ATF and it was still playing up.

we couldn't source a second hand box at a sensible price so it got an extra peddle. it was a fair carry on getting a conversion kit put together for it.. but boy it was certainly worth while as it was really fun to drive afterwards

I now on the AL4 citroen/peugeot auto's you have two drain plugs, remove both to drain insert inner and outer plug back in then fill with oil run upto 80'c (gearbox) then remove the outer plug iirc to drain the excess fluid out at temp whilst its running !! Doubt your german auto will be like the **** french one lol but they are notorious for electrovalves going causing them to stick in certain gears !!

    I fixed it!!

Did a scan on the auto box and there was one error code.
I forgot to take down the exact error code but it was about talking about not communication to the speed sensor in the gear box.

Cleared the code, went for a drive and all appeared well.
I'll keep an eye on that code just in case it comes back but I got a feeling it was down to the laptop crashing mid scan last night. I hope its that and not my speed sensor or cable failing. TIme will tell I guess.

But for now I have 100% clean scans (The TV Tuner don't count).

It looks like its a proper error not caused my laptop restarting.

Removing that error and the box works fine.
When the error comes back the box is stuck in 3rd gear.

I'm impressed that the car can pull away in 3rd.

Sorry but knocked off VCDS or not, an aborted scan on the diagnostic interface isnt going to cause the autobox or anything else drop into limp mode.

Its a real fault, and needs fixed.

Check the wiring connector for corrosion first off!

I've had VCDS crash my HVAC before. That was genuine.

That's my task today. Find the sensor, strip the plug and clean and see what happens.

I've just ordered a new sensor as well.
I'll collect it tomorrow, so if the clean don't work I can bolt the new sensor in.
    Hopefully that will be it.

    WooHoo.

FItted a new G38 sensor, cleared the code and it all worked fine.
Gear change has smoothed out, it seems more responsive on pull away.

If your box is getting jerky, I would recommend replacing the Speed sensor.
I'm going to replace the other one in the next couple of months.
