I have an Audi A4 2001 pd 130, and it has the worst problem you can have with a car! A fault that cannot be found! I have taken it to an audi dealer twice to be told there is no fault! I have taken it to 2 individual diesel specialists who can't find the fault!

The symptoms:
1.When under load i.e 2nd/3rd gear using torque to pull away it hesitates... in that the turbo is not present for about 1 second and then spools up (violently if you have planted your right foot)
2. When you turn the engine off the car shakes. This is as if the timing is out, like the engine cylinders are not stopping in correct time.
3. It randomly may work perfectly for a whole week without problem, this is what is really annoying, because you enjoy how the car should be, but then when you need it the most it is dangerous to drive.
4. Large amounts of black smoke pour out of the exhaust when it is playing up. Its as if you put your foot to the floor to make sure you get away on a roundabout and it leaves the car behind a thick black smoke.

Now from every garage that has seen the car they say: we can't find any faults on diagnostics, no errors at all. I have asked all to road test but the car seems to be working fine for them at that time! I have had them change numerous fuel filters and the maf sensor to no avail. It feels like it must be a fuelling issue, yet i don't know if its electrical or mechanical and what it is?

This must be a common fault on the PD130 or either I have the rarest fault ever or perhaps my local audi engineers are just useless at real engineering.

I would really appreciate any help anyone can muster as I have had enough, I have had the car for 3 yrs and it has been great but this fault has been on and off getting worse for the last 2yrs.

Any help appreciated

Can't you arrange with a garage that you drop by when it's happening and demonstrate the fault to them?

In my experience that's the only way as I've had faults with cars before that garages couldn't replicate but when I demonstrated it they accepted it and got it fixed.

Thanks fjtwelve,
Did yours do the same thing then? Mine is acting really bad and stalls first thing in the morning. Who does the work on yours in falmouth? Would like to find a good garage thats not Carrs and knows a bit about engineering instead of laptops.

This happened not long after i bought the car. I took it back (all the way from my previous home in Scotland to Essex, i was very ****** off) and the tame mechanic at the dealer (Audi Diesels) took one look wandered off to another car in the yard swapped the N75 and bobs your uncle. Took him less than 2 hours start to finish. In Falmouth I use the Skoda dealer in Penryn (confusingly called Falmouth Garage). Are you nearby? They are not particularly fantastic, but much more approachable than Audi in Truro, will discuss a tech problem if you know what you are talking about, and about 2/3 the price. No problems so far after a year of looking after both our cars. The only other remotely local garage i have found is the VW and Audi Centre in 47 Pennsylvania Road, Exeter, tel 01392 422 722.

hi have you any diagnostic codes stored,or can you post them,i repair alot of diesels tdi+pd tdi, vagcom codes are fine....tim cooper

Thanks guys for input,
I think I'll order a new n75 and give that a go, as for fault codes the audi garage have said there are none. I don't have VAG.com so wouldn't know.
I'm based in Truro and do know of falmouth garage.

cheers

Hi,

Thanks so much for posting this so long ago! I have exactly the same symptoms that you describe, with my car faulting only when it rains. Having had the MAF, EGR, thermostats, crank shaft seals replaced (a long list of supposed fix-its all of which failed to address the problem), and for months my garage telling me that I was imagining things as diagnostics could find no fault) I would be incredibly grateful if you could let me know if the N75 valve was the problem with your car. If it wasn't did you ever get it fixed in the end. After over two years of this problem gradually getting worse to the point where it is dangerous to drive when it faults, I am desperate for any help :) Your comment about smothering the car behind in black smoke made me laugh as this is exactly what I do LOL.

Here is hoping (praying) that you are still on active on this site :)

Many thanks, Pascale
