I bought a Dension Icelink off ebay, went to instal it thinking it would be a straight forward job only to find there are 3 or 4 plugs on the back of my head unit. Which one do I need to unplug to fit into the Dension adaptor part? Also I read on here that you need to download something from Dension onto your itunes so that it can program the interface. It came from an Audi so will I still have to do this and if so where can I find said file? Densions website is a bit ****!

After trying to find the info I need on here, I'm starting to wonder whether this icelink is really worth it, it sounds complicated to use and its going in my missus's car (women and technology)

The Dension link replaces the 6 disc multichanger. If I remember correctly that is the blue block in the back of your stereo. You do need to download a track and run that as a config file - I think you need a couple, one to clear the ipod and prep it, the next to assign it to Audi. Not sure if yours will run already. Let me know if you're struggling I think I have mine somewhere.

Sometimes you can experience problems with the icelink. Such as it not letting the headunit control it - a bit like a pc crashing. Though overall I definitely think it's worth it. I often put mine onto shuffle and just jog through tracks.

    Hope this helps.

I'm in this position at the moment, just got an i-pod and the wife will buy me a connector for xmas, from what i can understand the advantage of the denison is you can set the play lists on the i-pod via pc and go through them using the head unit 1-6 selector - i've got the 6 disc in dash which i guess has a cd changer in at the back to connect with but how do you select the cd changer (i-pod) option on the stereo - can't see a button for cd changer/aux....

    Couple of questions pls :

Is the Denison significantly better sound quality then just a tape convertor?

Whats the x-link option - how much compared to the denison 100 quid option (for just a lead/interface!!)

How do you select the changer option on the head unit

Does the in dash 6 cd audi unit have an aux in on the back via rca type connectors?

    Cheers

I can only answer a few of these questions:

Is the Denison significantly better sound quality then just a tape convertor?
Definately, and far better than an FM transmitter too. To me it seems as good as a CD, although it does also depend on the quality of your MP3 files too.

How do you select the changer option on the head unit
On my Symphony head unit I have a CDC button (CD Changer I guess).
    The user manual should say?

I've been using a generation 4 ipod with my Denison IceLink Plus which has worked really well, and will never not have one again.
I got a new Ipod Touch recently and unfortunately the generation 2 ipod touch doesn't charge. It because apple have changed the input voltage or something, so old usb leads etc won't charge either. It just worth checking before buying a Denison that it will actually charge your ipod - like I say though, it only seems to be the latest ipods that have this different charge situation, and I don't know if Denisons latest product accomodate this.

The Denison website is rubbish. It doesn't help that the company called DenisonUSA who I think were the main distributor in the US appear to have gone bust. All of my searching on forums etc had links to this site which seemed to have loads of useful stuff thats not there anymore.

Having said that, I emailed Denison support recently via their website and the service was amazing - they responded straight away and were really helpful. My advice would be to not waste too much time looking around the web, just contact them.

Thats what I need to know, I have the double DIN size with built in 6 disc changer, cant see a button for an additional changer but have yet to take the unit out to see the back of it..

Can you use the Denison and I've got an i-pod mini generation 2 - that should charge then, had a look on the site and it's compatible so I guess it will charge on the move...

Think I'm sold on the idea of the Denison due to quality of sound and play list selection - just like confirmation it will work with my 6 disc in dash from a 51 plate S3 and that there is no other easy (and good quality sound option) like RCA in's on the back....

    Cheers

I may be mistaken in thinking this, but isnt this just like an FM transmitter except it wires in via the arial direct instead of changing the sound signal to a radio signal? Abit better but never going to be as good as a direct link?

Dont you need a Smart lead so your back speakers work? on most audi's as the rear speakers are amplified you need a smart lead so it amplifys the back speakers as well when you use an auxillary input.

There are converters that you can buy if you dont mind loosing the CD changer, they use the same connection and is a better quality sound however you loose the connection..

Id reccomend the IO play.. bluetooth connection.. best link for ipod without changing the stereo and you can use your phone with it too.
small dongle connects to the bottom of any ipod, and transmitts it via bluetooth, perfect quality and you can use your ipod as normal.. only downside is that you cant charge it while in the car, but can do that at home, and you get handsfree calling for the same price and quality of a parrot kit for example.

GT i dont think we're gonna get the answer we're after mate, we cant disconnect the disc changer shy as the disc changer is integrated in our HU's..... for those of us with double DIN units.....

im gonna be buying an ipod soon but only on the condition that i can rig it up for use in the car....... i already have aparrot bluetooth so hard wired is preferred

animal get in touch with parrot see if you can get an integration dongle like the io play that will alloy you to play your ipod through your speakers via bluetooth? By now im sure they have like a lead or something you can wire in behind your dash, then connect something to the ipod.

i think they came out on facelifts mate, not the easiest of jobs from what i understand changing the dash as you have to replace the whole centre and the gear stick back to the rear seats..... obviously the climate will be different, id hope these were the same plugs etc....

things arent all doom and gloom....you'd have a nice cup holder after all that graft :icon_thumright:

The sym ii still has the cd changer port on the back and it can still be used, the adapter you get that plugs into the cd has a socket for the changer on it too so you could have the hu 6 disc 6 disc in the boot and the ipod if need be!..... The ipod is selected by pressing the cd button twice. The lead is then run into the glove box where your ipod will stay, the cd + , - buttons do the play lists and the track are done by the normal track change buttons you can only have 6 playlists though with 99 tracks per playlist. This way is so much better than bluetooth and fm transmitters it's not even worth considering them.

glad you got your answer dude... Animal shouldn't be to much of a hard job already changed all of the interior including the entire dash board carpet seats an door cards, so the center consol would be least of my worries as long as I can fit that stereo, it's awesome. Thanks for your help tho.

i was gonna go for the dension kit but now im going for the harman kardon drive and play 2, and im paying £190 for it. has anyone had this kit?

you can hardwire it to the OEM headunit, or use the FM transmitter (sound will be poor) and the kit comes with a little lcd screen and mouse (all wireless) so you can scroll this your ipod etc. just a little extra money than the dension, and if anyone has had one of these units please tell us what the quality is like

    thanks

i thought about this kit but dont want anything thats not OEM in the car, the denison is discrete..... cant even begin to think where you'd place the mouse or the screeen without it looking untidy

Quality should be fine if its hard wired....

The GenII+ is the latest one I believe. It uses the different wiring/connectors from the 8P A3's. The only real difference is it'll play MP3 CD's and has a proper AUX IN for iPOD etc.
